Re: BRM Question
I believe the BMR server is only supported on an HP, AIX, or Solaris platform (Unix). You will need a Unix machine to support BMR. File Permissions on Restore
As part of my DR activities, I will be restoring files from many NT servers onto single (consolidated) servers. TSM Job "release"
I'm looking for a way to have my operators run my nightly DB backup and Copypool backup scripts at an appropriate time. Set times available via administrator schedules will not work for me. The other challenge is to allow my operators to run nightly scripts without having an authority other than operator. I believe at least the DB backup requires more than operator priviledge (maybe system), and I don't want to give them the ability to compromise my system. The nightly scheduling of administrator scripts will not work for me as the window for running the jobs varies from night to night, thus the need to "release" or run these scripts at appropriate (varying) times. Sorry if this has been asked before. Is it possible to do tape copypool reclamation with a single tape drive ? The reclaimpool option isn't allowed for a copypool, so I can't see how to define file (disk) space to do it. More Firewall Questions
I'm implementing a TSM backup solution through a firewall. The clients are inside the firewall, the server outside. I have TCP ports 1500 and 1501 enabled through the router and client backups seem to work OK using. I'd like to use the backup web client, but I'm a little confused. I have HTTP port 1581 enabled, but that doesn't seem to be enough. I read about the WEBPORTS option and the defaults if you don't specify it. To assure that I use "fixed" ports I'm proposing enabling two more TCP ports (say 1582,1583) in the router, and adding the WEBPORTS option 1582 1583 to the client options files. Re: Scheduling TSM backups using 3rd party schedulers
We use Control/M exclusively to schedule our TSM backups in our production environments. I'm not a Contol/M expert, but it seems to work well in our environment. The only problem I have had is that I don't get a view of the Control/M jobs in the TSM activity log. I don't see job statistics for the "outside" scheduled jobs. I think this is because the job output is routed to Control/M. This causes problems if you are using any add on's like TSMManager or others that rely on information in the activity log to gather information. There is probably a way to resolve this though I haven't had time to pursue it yet. Re: Upgrade TSM Server from 4.2.3.2 to 5.2.2
Mike, We are in the process of upgrading from TSM 4.2.2 on AIX 4.3 to TSM 5.2 on AIX 5.1. The path we are following is similiar to what Paul outlines.I also recommend the opsys upgrade take place before the TSM upgrade. We plan to finish the jump to 5.2.2 this weekend. First we upgraded to AIX 5.1 64bit and reinstalled the TSM 4.2.2 filesets . We then serviced TSM to 4.2.4 to get the cleanup backupgroups function (I think you need at least 4.2.3). This worked fine except for a licensing compliance issue which I'm not certain I understand. It was resolved by restoring the previous nodelock file. We are up and running on 4.2.4 with AIX 5.1 64bit. I have already run the cleanup backupgroups in preparation for the weekend upgrade. This weekend we will migrate TSM 4.2.4 to 5.2.2 by installing the base 5.2.0 then the maintenance. I'll let you know how long the upgradedb goes and whether I encounter any issues. Last weekend I completed upgrading TSM from 4.2.3 to 5.2.2. The upgrade went very smoothly and with hardly any problems. I do have three issues so far. During the expiration process I receive "hundreds" of ANR0106E messages Imarqry.(4863) Unexpected error 2 fetching row in table "archive.descriptions". This doesn't seem to affect the correct functioning of the expiration process. This looks like a known problem addressed by IC39132. I also see many ANR0480W messages session xxx for node yyy () connection with client severed. This happens for many of my clients that I use schedule=prompted. Although annoying, it also seems that the sessions are working OK. Looks like this issue may also be already addressed by IC37862. Perhaps my biggest "gotcha" is that the maxnummp setting for each nodename no longer seems to be honored. This is especially true for clients that have resourceutilization set greater than 1. This has caused havoc with my tape drive use, mostly overcommitting the resource and making everything run longer. Is anyone else experiencing this behaviour with 5.2.2? Re: Anyone using Servergraph?
I found Servergraph to be unresponsive to my questions when I was investigating their products. I've asked multiple times about information on their lite and their Windows offerings without any response. I also find the product to be expensive. I'm using TSMManager, a resonably priced product that gives me everthing that I need to manage my day to day operation. POSTSCHEDULECMD Timing
Hi ITSM'rs I'm running backups out of schedules for clients that have resourceutilization set to >1. I have noticed that the postschedulecmd runs before all of the associated sessions that have been started are finished, ie. before the schedule has completely finished. Since I use the pre/post to cycle down/up my applications and database I certainly don't want this to happen. Has anyone else seen this behavior? I'm running 5.2. 3590 Switched Fiber
Hi ITSM'rs, I have a new fiber attached 3590 implementation that I would like advice on. I'm not a SAN architect nor an AIX admin (two strikes?)so I'd like the opinion of anyone that has a similiar infrastructure in place. I will have 16 3590-E1A drives attached to two McData switches using each of the fiber connectors in each drive. Each of the McData switches are connected to a seperate Connectrix director. From the AIX TSM host I have 3 HBA's going to each of the Connectrix boxes (total of six). I'd like to configure for availability and performance. I'd like to exploit failover capabilities along with any kind of load balancing I may be able to obtain. My dilema is how to configure the drives to AIX. Would it be best to group drives and distribute them across the HBA's defining a single primary and redundant path. Or would it be best to pool all the HBA's and define primary and alternate paths to each of the drives on each HBA (16x6 devices)? I'd appreciate any input from anyone that has a similiar configuration in place or can lead me to any information that will assist me. Many thanks, Rodney Hroblak ADP __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Re: AW: Command line equivalent for GUI
Stefan, Thanks very much. I had another suggestion of using resourceutilization but that doesn't help. The percent of total change in each incremental is small and I still end up scanning all 1M files. This looks more like what I need. I didn't realize that it was possible to put ranges within the exclude statements. I'll have to give it a try. Command line equivalent for GUI
Hi, I'm backing up a NAS device with 1M+ files. As other posts indicate, the only way to get any performance in this setup is to split the file backups across multiple sessions. In my case I have two backup hosts, each running two backup streams. I can start each of the four backup streams using the GUI and selecting appropriate folders. A kind of load balancing is achieved by picking an appropriate mix of folders for each backup stream. Each backup runs in a few hours each stream processing a subset of the 1M files. My problem is I can't figure out how to accomplish the same thing using the command line and associated include/excludes. I'd like to schedule the four streams to run the same way, each with an appropriate set of folders/files to process. It would be wonderful if I could somehow see how this is accomplished via the GUI, as I can't seem to get the same behavior using commands. Each combination I have tried always results in each backup stream processing/scanning all of the 1M files! This takes way too many hours and doesn't provide the same parallel behavior I get when running the GUI. How can I limit each stream to processes only the files/folders I desire without scanning everything; the same way as the GUI seems to function? Andy, I must be confused (what else is new). I believe I tried running a backup as you suggested. Web client missing features
Sorry if this has been asked b4, but I couldn't find anything in the archives. How do I do a "find" of files to restore using the web client? Using the windows gui client (dsm.exe) there is a find button that is very handy when you know part of the name of a file. I don't see this on my web client, is this intentional? FC 3590E1A per HBA
Hi, I saw somewhere in the list that IBM recommends two 3590 FC drives per HBA. Is this published somewhere or just "word of mouth"? If there is a planning document that discusses this I would be interested in the link. I currently have 16 drives across four 6228 HBA's on an AIX box. I've seen some discussions and math about throughput etc., but there should be some rule of thumb that can guide me to whether I have a "reasonable' configuration or not. HBA's aren't cheap so I'd hate to require 8 of them. Thanks, Rod Hroblak ADP __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail is new and improved - Check it out! http://promotions.yahoo.com/new_mail
