TSM 3.7 to 4.1 Upgrade

2001-03-15 Thread Roy Lake

Hi Chaps,

Its coming to that time of the year where we have to think about upgrading our TSM
server from 3.7.x to 4.1.x.

Can you please confirm what this process involves?.

I understand that we have to re-define the licences, but do we also have to re-define
the library, and drives, etc?.

Anywhere where I can find out more as the docs are as usual very unhelpful.

TSM 4.1 Client with 3.7.4 Server

2001-03-22 Thread Roy Lake

Chaps,

I pretty much already expect the answer to be a resounding "yes" on this one - but its
best to be sure...

Can we run 4.1 Clients with a 3.7.4 server on AIX 4.3.3

Upgrade Problems From L18 to L32 Library?..

2001-05-01 Thread Roy Lake

Hi Chaps,

We may be upgrading our L18 library soon to an L32.

I was just wondering what problems I might expect to come across - and also any ideas
on how to transfer the tapes over, etc...Do I have to check them out, or can I just
remove them physically, put them into the new library and run an audit?...

Will I have to remove the devices and re-add them or does an L32 have the same element
id's etc...?

Any comments and suggestions would be greatfully accepted.

Licencing Proglems when upgrading to TSM 4.1 - HELP!

2001-05-10 Thread Roy Lake

Hi Guys,

I have just taken the jump to 4.1 from 3.7.4 on AIX 4.3.3

Everything seems ok (so far!!) aside from the fact that the licencing has completely
changed.

I have placed a call with Tivoli (who were not THAT helpful!) and they say that I no
longer need to register "network.lic" (It doesnt exist anyway!!), and instead of the
old client.lic files, I need to use 1 mgsyslan.lic for each client.

Do you guys agree with this??..

RMAN instead of AIX Scripts ???.

Could anyone point me in the right direction as to where I can find out more about how

Best Practice Backup DB and Stgpool Process???

2000-10-05 Thread Roy Lake

Chaps,

I need to know the best procedure to follow with regards to stg pool backups and db
backups.

Let me tell you what we are doing:-

Most of our backups take place overnight between midnight and 6am. (Only a few
non-critical during the day).
Storage pool backups are taken at 8am (with NO DB backup)
Storage pool backups are taken again at 13:00 WITH DB backup (just before our tapes go
offsite).
Storage pool backup are taken again at 18:00 (with NO DB backup)

I understand that you SHOULD take a db backup immediately after storage pool backups,
so maybe we should just do the one backup of everything EARLY morning?...The reason I
do the db backup IMMEDIATELY before we send the tapes off, is that at least we then
know that we can recover up to the time the tapes go off...

Anyone have any better recommendations or suggestions?.

Compression / No Compression ???

2001-03-08 Thread Roy Lake

Hi Chaps,

Just wanted to share my findings with you with regards to TSM compression/no
compression.

We have 3575-L18 tape library. We use 3570-C Format tapes. We used to have CLIENT
compression set to YES when doing backups, with DRIVE compression OFF. Most of the
data on our systems is Oracle. When we had client compression set to YES, each
cartridge would take about 5GB.

I have done some testing and found that when I switched compression OFF, we managed to
get around 21GB on each cart, and also the backups were a LOT quicker.

IBM recommend (and I quote:) "Oracle databases are normally full of white space, so
compression is required. Either h/w or client compression."

Could someone please explain WHY compression is required if we get more on tape with
it switched OFF, and the backups are quicker?.

In our environment, TSM has its own 10Meg a sec network, and 99.9% of the backups are
done overnight, so there is no problem with performance issues.

Am I missing something here, or is it REALLY a better idea to forget about compression
totally?.

How much data in primary to pool since last backup?

2001-03-09 Thread Roy Lake

Chaps,

Easy question...

We run a backup of our tape pool every day to our copy tape pool which we then send
offsite.

Can we tell how much data in the primary pool is to be backed up?...This way, we can
see how much longer the backup stgpool will take..

Compression/No Compression...the story continues & findings.....

2001-03-09 Thread Roy Lake

Hi Chappies,

After having fiddled with the compression settings over the last few days, here are my
findings:-

But seriously folks, after testing all of the various options, here are my findings:-

NO Compression:-

Setting this option, shaved 25 minutes off of the total backup time for our main
Oracle database, but bizarrely had NO effect on others, and we used the same amount of
tapes when doing the storage pool backups.

DRIVE Compression

Using this option, cut 28 minutes off of the total backup time for our main Oracle
database, 23 minutes off of another DB, and 29 minutes off of another, and we used 1
less tape when doing the storage pool backups (this is arguable though, as the number
of tapes we use can go up or down 1 or 2, depending on drive errors, etc).

Under the original circumstances where CLIENT compression was used, this obviously
took more time, as it was compressing the data BEFORE sending it to the server.

As I said earlier this week though, there IS a negative side to all of this, in that
the storage pool backups (copies of our main storage pools that get sent offsite for
DR purposes) now take 4 hours, where typically it used to take 2 hours. Interestingly
enough, migration from DISK storage pool to tape storage pool is NOT affected.

So, as you can see, it's a question of what is preferred - quicker COLD backup times
balanced against crippling storage pool backup times.

One thing you can rely on though - DONT rely on the "Estimated Capacity" figure of a
tape in TSM - it actually means very little

Thanks to everyone for their input!!!

Contents of a known archive

2002-09-23 Thread Roy Lake

Guys,

I have been trawling through the archives here and I am unable to find
a suitable answer.

I have noted that when you use the WEB/DSM GUI it actually displays the
archive contents fairly quickly, so I suspect that there HAS to be a
quicker way of getting the result I need.

Basically, I want to know what filespaces are in a given archive. I
already know the archive name, so here is the select statement I am
using:-

select DISTINCT filespace_name from archives where
description='description' and node_name='nodename'

This actually DOES work fine, but it takes anything between 3-5 minutes
to get a result.

Anyone know of a quicker way of doing it? - anyone know how the WEB/DSM
gui does it so quickly?.

How do I know what tape/s my data is on?

2002-04-12 Thread Roy Lake

Ok guys,

Here is a puzzler for you.

Lets say that I have a primary tape pool, but I DONT have a secondary
pool. (IE data ONLY goes to tape once with NO second copy). We then send
those tapes offsite. (This saves us valuable space in the tape
library).

One month later, a customer asks for an archive to be retrieved from
those tapes.

How do I know what tapes to retrieve? - These archives would have built
up over a period of time, so there may be more than 10 tapes offsite and
I dont want them all!!.

Is there a way that I can find out which set of tapes my archived data
is on? - Bearing in mind that if reclamation is also run of this pool,
then the data may possibly be moved around on a regular basis.

Any help would be greatfully recieved.

How do I know what tapes my data is on? - Part II

2002-04-15 Thread Roy Lake

Sorry Guys,

Maybe I didn't explain myself very well. Here is the situation:-

We have a customer who now requires that EVERY month, an archive is
taken to a management class that may be 7 or 10 years.

Obviously over a period of time, this data will be migrated from disk
to tape, and then the ONSITE copies will just sit in the library taking
up valuable slots.

I don't want this to happen!. Over a prolonged period, we will run out
of slots!. So, the solution that I came up with, is to save directly to
tape, and then send those tapes offsite, thus "freeing" up the slots.
Now obviously, this is NOT an ideal solution, I realise that!. But what
other options do I have?.

Disaster Recovery

2002-04-16 Thread Roy Lake

Hi guys,

I am in the situation whereby I have to think about DR soon, and need
the best solution.

Here is the story so far:-

I have a TSM Server on an RS/6000 plugged into a 3583 library on one
site. The DR suite is 4 to 500 yards down the road. This has another
RS/6000 with a second 3583 library plugged into it for HA purposes.

What i need to be able to do, when the Primary Server fails over to the
secondary Server (In a HA situation), is to get it to use the second
library.

Both of the two libraries are plugged into to mirrored ESS's, so both
the RS/6000's should be able to see BOTH libraries.

What I was thinking of doing was putting copy tapes into the second
library, and onsite tapes into the first and utilising both librarys at
the same time - can this be done?.

If anyone could give me and pointers here as to the best approach or
any possible OTHER approaches, then I would be forever in their debt!.

Migration Question

2002-05-07 Thread Roy Lake

Hi Guys,

I have a quick question for you

I am about to delete all of the promary disk storage pools for a
resizing and re-placement exercise.

IBM have given me their recommendations as:-

1. Backup stgpool.
2. Update lo mig and Hi mig to 0 to migrate everything to tape.

Now, am I right in saying that option 2 is un-necessary, as this data
should already reside on tape anyway (as it would have been backup up
sometime when a "backup stgpool" was taken)?.

Kind Regards,

Roy Lake

Aggregate rate ??

2000-08-23 Thread Roy Lake

Hi Chaps,

Ok, I have a question for you all...

We have an RS/6000 SP system with 6 silver wide nodes. One of these nodes is the TSM
server. We are running TSM server version 3.7.3.6 and TSM client versions 3.7.2.14.

We had a MAJOR re-org this weekend and backed up about 47gig worth of oracle data and
restored it all. The strange thing is that I am a little confused by the Aggregate
rate. The Network data transfer rate is around 8-10 meg a second (what I expect to
see) and the Aggregate data rate is only around 500-800KB per sec. According to my
reckoning then it would take absolutely AGES to restore 47gig, but we managed it quite
happily in around 2 and a half to 3 hours.

What is the aggregate rate telling me here??..thats its only transferring 500 meg a
second, or am I reading this incorrectly???

Kind Regards,
