TSM api and C expert wanted for understanding expire.c !
Hi *TSM'ers ! Like lots of TSM administrators backing up informix DB's thru onbar utility, I'm facing an expiration problem for the logical logs created in my storage pools (each log has an unique identifier, what disables TSM expiration capability). I therefore was looking for a solution to get a rid of this garbage polluting my nice sytem, when I found in this mail group what seems to be an excellent utility written in C : expire.c I tried to install it on one of our nodes backing up an informix db, but got some problems having it working properly. Something must be wrong in my parametering, because I always get the same error return code : "*** BSAInit failed: (12) An entry in the environment structure is invalid". Moving data to a new storage pool, but still having volumes in old copy pool ...
Hi *SM'ers ! Could someone give me an explanation on following topic : I had a storage pool called stgpoolA, wich had copy made daily on a copy storage pool called CopypoolA. For technical reasons I moved all data from stgpoolA to a new primary stgpool called stgpoolB, wich is having daily copies on copy storage pool CopypoolB. I expected my copystgpool CopypoolA to be empty after having been moving all original data to stgpoolB, due to the fact that this stgpool has a daily copy to a CopypoolB, therefore making old copy storage pool data obsolete. Problem is that several days after having completely transfering primary pool data to my new stgpool, I still have volumes belonging the old copy storage pool. How is it possible ? Do I have doubled data in my 2 copy storage pools ? May I safely delete volumes belonging old copy storage pool ? Any help or explanation greatly appreciated ;-) Thanks in advance. Dynamic allocation of FC Ultrium drives ... Is it possible ?
Hi Gurus, I would like to know if it is possible to share directly attached FC Ultrium drives in a 3584 library, between multiple TSM servers, without using the 3584 library sharing feature. This would mean a dynamic drive allocation, same style as DDS feature in Legato's Networker. Thanks in advance. Anybody using TDP for Informix on aix v5.1 64bits ?
Hi *SM'ers ! I'm having trouble trying to backup an Informix database (Informix server 9.30 fc2x5 64 bits) which is installed on an AIX machine (aix 5.1 64 bits) : I cannot find a TDP for Informix client that works on such a system. On Tivoli's web page there is no information about an eventual release supporting aix 5.1 64 bits for this client, and I was wondering if anybody founded a trick to perform Informix backups in that kind of environment. I already tried with a TDP for Informix aix43.64bit.4.1.3.0 client, but always get an infamous "An unexpected error occurred: Could not load module /usr/tivoli/tsm/client/informix/bin/bsashr10.o.The program is a discontinued 64-bit object file." message :-( Anybody having a clue ? Re: LTO Bulk Reader filled....
Hi Phillip, You're absolutely right in you assertion : you effectively have to give an answer for each ejected tape, but a simple shell script could make your life much easier, like this one, that queries TSM server to find out what reply it has to issue, and then responds with correct value. CMD="dsmadmc -id= -password=x" $CMD "move drm * wherestate=mountable tostate=vault remove=untileefull" if [ $? -eq 0 ]; then RETRY=0 sleep 30 while true do $CMD q request > /tmp/checkout_ask grep ANR8322I /tmp/checkout_ask > /dev/null if [ $? -eq 0 ]; then RETRY=0 grep ANR8322I /tmp/checkout_ask |awk '{print $2}' > /tmp/checkou t_reply COMMAND=`sed s/://g /tmp/checkout_reply` $CMD "reply $COMMAND" rm /tmp/checkout_* sleep 30 else if (( $RETRY==0 )) ; then RETRY=1 sleep 30 else rm /tmp/checkout_* break fi fi done Fi Note the double loop with "sleep 30" statement : it gives TSM server (and robotic device) some times to do it's checkout business, case it would be busy doing other tapes mounts/dismounts. Infos on TDP for Informix for IAX 5.1 64 bits

Does anyone out here (from IBM or Tivoli) have information on release date for the AIX 5.1 64 bits TDP for Informix client ? 2 servers and libraries , 2 sites, I want super disaster protection !
Hi Gurus ! I have a question concerning security : we currently have one TSM server (H80 AIX server) connected to a 3584 library. As our library reaches it's capacity limit, we plan to buy a new one, and possibly another server, to build a double server and library solution. I'm looking for an improved disaster-resistant solution, that could give us the opportunity rebuilding the whole system, case one server and it's library would be destroyed. The actual situation : we do nightly backups, followed by a complete stgpool backup and dbbackup that are stored offsite. We also own DRM. What we plan to do : split our backups data over two libraries, to benefit of the increased tape drives quantity and tape capacity, and to split DB data over two systems (therefore accelerating expiration process etc ...). The two server-libraries couples will be installed in two different locations, to minimize risks in case of fire, earthquake ... How would you build such a solution, that would give you the opportunity rebuilding the whole system in case of total destruction of one of those sites ? Would you use virtual volumes for crossing Dbbackups and STGpool backups ? Any suggestion will be welcomed ;-). Thanks in advance ! Re: 3590 Cartridge with Write Errors
Hi thomas, I would advise you to do an "audit vol x fix=yes" to check if it is ok, and eventually repair it. If not, you can still do a "move data" to copy usable data on another tape, and therefore not loose precious backup data. (the original tape will then return to scratch, if originally checked-in with scratch status). Those things are happening relatively frequently, and are not obligatory due to tape, but also to tape drives ... So reuse your tape and if you find it allways has problems, then throw it away ! Arnaud, Before I answer this question, I would have to know the bandwidth of your data link between the two sites. The implementation would be different for a slower link than a faster link. Regardless, I've found that in every situation such as this, it is beneficial to build two TSM server instances on each machine. Server1 on machine 1 and Server2 on the other machine 2 are the normally active servers, and the others are placeholders in case you need to run both servers on one machine during disaster recovery mode. Once that is in place, virtual volumes for database backups will likely be OK depending on the link speed and size of the database. Because you know that the opposite server will be running during a disaster, you can add other functions as you add link speed. Re: add drives in IBM 3583 library
Hi Kurt, The response is "NO", you don't have to register 3 drives. You only have to declare 1 library, no matter if there is one or 12 drives in the library. Just issue "reg lic file=1library.lic", it will be in compliance with licensing terms ! Cheers. TSM server "buffering" client IP address ?
Hi gurus ! I'm facing the following problem : we have a client node which IP address has been modified yesterday morning, the machine has then been rebooted, and of course, TSM client restarted. But this morning TSM showed me the scheduled nightly backup for this node as "missed". I have a test schedule, that can be started manually, to test a connection between TSM and client node. After having been restarting client once again, I tried to execute this schedule, and this time obtained "missed". Ping between client and sever works in both directions, so there is no connection issue. Dsmsched log and error files don't show any problem. After several retries, I decided with our network admin to trace IP exchanges between the two machines, and we found that after having been restarting the scheduler, systems where using the new node IP address for some transactions, but at a certain point, TSM tried to use the OLD ip address of the node ! Thus our test schedule fails ! Could anybody tell me if there is any kind of "buffer" in TSM, that needs a certain time to be flushed before attributing new ip addresses to nodes, or something like this ? How does exactly works TSM node - server relation when starting a schedule, is there any kind of explanation ? Please help me, I absolutely have no idea of what happens. Scheduled archive shell script returns no error, but archive script failed !
Hi Gurus ! The script looks like : dsmc archive -archmc=migartion_archive -subdir=yes -quiet -archsyml=no /sapmnt/T21/ dsmc archive -archmc=migration_archive -subdir=yes -quiet -archsyml=no /usr/sap/put/ In the first line of the script, I made a typo, specifiying an inexistant management class, therefore the script failed ! How is it possible that TSM returns me "completed", as this script failed ? Is it a bug ? onsmsync error XBSA 98 ... anyone seen this before ?
Hi *SM'ers ! I try to use onsmsync utilitily to delete some old logical logs in our informix DB, and obtain an XBSA error 98 as a result in bar_act_log file. When looking into dsierror.log file, I found lots of this message : 08/24/01 09:38:40 ANS4993E TDP Infmx AIX42 ANSO663 Invalid copy type. Anyone having a clue what those ANS4993E and ANSO663 messages are meaning ? Thanks in advance. Urgent : looking for download site for tdp for informix 4.1.3
Hi *SM'ers ! This is a quite unfrequent request, but I'm looking for any link where I could find TDP for Informix v 4.1.3 software. I already tried on Informix, Ibm and Tivoli web sites, but whent unsuccessfull (latest dowloadable version is 4.1.0 on Tivoli site). We also asked our Tivoli representatives for this latest version of the product ... and are still waiting, more than 4 weeks now ! As usually we have tests to run, that should be finished before ... yesterday, and still no product !! If anybody has a clue where to find this precious jewel, his (her) help would be greatly appreciated ! T.I.A. tdp for informix 4.1.3 : is it compatible with informix xps 8.31 ? (unable to find storage manager)
Hi *SM'ers, We recently intalled a new version of an informix server (XPS 8.31) on our AIX system (4.3.3), and are planing to use TDP for informix V 4.1.3 to backup this system, in conjunction with our TSM 4.1.3 server. My first question is : does anybody knows if this version of TDP is compatible with my version of informix (Tivoli web site says yes, but the readme file on cdrom doesn't mention Informix XPS 8.31 at all : who should I trust ?) Second question : I already installed TDP for informix, and parametered it as I usually do with other versions of informix, but when I try to start informix, I get the following output in bar_act_log file : [001] 15:57:51 WARNING: LOG_BACKUP_MODE is set to MANUAL, but there is no storage manager configured. You must configure a storage manager or your server will eventually hang. Does anybody knows what is happening, and eventually what to do to correct the problem ? Re: Spill processing please help
Hi John, why don't you just do it the easyest way : q act begint=-xx(hours) s=migration This will tell you immediately when your migration processes are occuring ! Cheers. Arnaud -Original Message- From: Doherty, John (ANFIS) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Freitag, 26. Oktober 2001 13:56 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Spill processing please help Hi folks I am back on the newsgroup because I desperately would like some information. We currently run TSM 3.1 on an MVS 390 mainframe. As you are aware definition of the disk storage pools contain an option to migrate to the next storage pool (in our case cartridge) if the disk pool exceeds a specified value. In our case we have these migration thresholds set at high 90% low 70% this means when the disk pool exceeds 90% migrate data until it reaches 70% and then stop. I believe this is different from a forced migration where you empty the storage pool in preparation for the next backup process. The question I have been asked is how do I know if we are spilling into this cartridge pool, i.e. how often is the disk pool exceeding 90% and forcing migration. This being the case we will incur extra processing and require to increase the size of the DASD pool. Can anyone tell me how to find out if this spill process is occurring. I.e. does anyone have a script, batch job etc. on how to determine when (if) this is happening. Even what I should be looking for to determine if this is happening would be helpful. Re: TSM scheduler stops by LOGOUT
Hi Rene, IMHO the easyest way is not to use nohup (this command has a strange behaviour under aix 4.3.3), but an "at" command, which will look like : echo "/usr/bin/dsmc sched > /dev/null 2>&1" | at now This works perfectly ! configuring TSM with HACMP and informix : help needed
Hi *'SM Gurus ! A probably easy question for anybody involved in this kind of installation : we are planing to install HACMP between two AIX boxes, let's call them A and B. The A box is hosting an informix db, wich is doing it's online backups thru onbar, using it's own dsm.sys with hostname A. The B box is also hosting an informix db, wich also has it's own online backup, using it's own dsm.sys, hostname B. Imagine the A box fails : machine B will automatically relay it, and temporarily host the A informix db. Problem is as follows : what about a restoration of my informix db back to sytem A ? Probably a full level 0 backup was made at the time the db was on server A, but all intermediary logs (logical logs) have been made as my informix db was hosted on system B : how do I do a restore of my db if part of the files belong hostname A and other part hostname B ? Do I need to install two different instances of tsm on each node, to be able to do my restore ? Lots of questions in fact, and absolutely no idea how to do it ! :-(( I'm not an informix specialist nor HACMP, so please, if you give me some infos, try to be as basical as possible ;-) Many many thanks in advance to any informix-hacmp god(esss) willing to help me ! equivalent of -virtualnodename for onbar
Hi *SM'ers, A still unresolved question : is there any way modyfiying onbar to have it restoring files created on a different node ? As far as I understood it, it seems onbar looks in dsm.sys file for finding the hostname it's going to use. I need a trick to bypass this, without having to modify my local dsm.sys file (cross restore from an HACMP'ed informix db, back to it's original place, but the "backup" node is hosting an other informix db that uses onbar too, so I can't modify dsm.sys). Any help appreciated TIA. Arnaud =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= | Arnaud Brion, Panalpina Management Ltd., IT Group | | Viaduktstrasse 42, P.O. Re: equivalent of -virtualnodename for onbar
Hi Jeff, Thanks for your help, but I believe I can't use your "modus operandi" in my case. Reason is following : if our server crash happens during the night, european time, the hacmp function will automatically transfer db content on another node, and users will continue working, because it's daytime in the us or in asia, thus generating lots of loglogs. When our team will be back, let's say 12 hours later, and try to restore this db on it's original node, all the work done during the night will be lost if we can't restore it (like you said "data accidentally backed up under the wrong node name is most likely not retrievable by onbar though or very difficult.") That's where it hurts ! Do you understand what I mean ? (sorry my english may not be perfect ...) So, what I'm looking for, is a backup strategy that works without losing any snippet of already typed-in info, I can't afford losing 12 hours work all around the world... Add to this situation is even worse than described, due to the fact our hacmp "backup" node is hosting an other informix db but that's an other story ! If you have other proposal, my eyes are wide opened ! Thanks anyway, your info helped me in some ways ;-) Cheers. Arnaud -Original Message- From: Jeff Bach [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Mittwoch, 31. Oktober 2001 16:07 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: equivalent of -virtualnodename for onbar Arnaud, Disable the backup of logical logging on the system to be restored to. Change the dsm.sys file for the API. (ie:/usr/adsm/api/dsm.sys). Now do the restore. The data stored by ADSM does not change due to a restore. You could define 1000 clients as your HACMP Informix DB nodename and as long as you don't backup any data on them, the data stored by ADSM does not change. Even if you do backup Informix data accidentally, the backup of the data you are restoring from is still good becuase Informix on a restore will ask for specific objects. The data accidentally backed up under the wrong node name is most likely not retrievable by onbar though or very difficult. We do this all the time, with HACMP and Service Guard systems. If this does not help, please specify concerns. TSM wizardry ?
Hi folks ! Here is a case that seems really strange to me. The picture : we have a node called pacrs170, that hosts a filespace named /fsdbexp. We used to backup this filespace daily, until we found it was useless keeping that data. I then decided do delete this filespace from TSM db, what worked perfectly : no trace from it at all, using show version, q fi, q occ aso . The day after, I checked this node again, and found the filespace was back, using q fi ! hidden data, preventing TSM to free licenses whan deleting a node ?
Hi *SM'ers Using TSM 4.1.3.0 on an AIX 4.3.3 system, I'm facing a little license problem : I recently found that our server was not in compliance with licensing terms, and then decided to remove some nodes that where not in use anymore. I deleted the filespaces that where associated with this nodes, and then did a delete node. For some mysterious reason, that command worked like a charm on some nodes, but I got the following output : 11/19/01 12:39:50 ANR2061I Node PACRS161 removed from policy domain AIX. 11/19/01 12:39:50 << Message number 2289 not available for language EN_US >> for some other nodes. Does anybody has a clue what this message could mean ? Now something more interresting : after having been removing 4 nodes, (inclusive 3 where I got this error message), I found the value in "Number of Managed System for LAN in use:", when I did a query lic, just decreased by 1 ... How is it possible ? Is there some hidden data belonging those deleted nodes that remains in TSM DB, therefore preventing TSM to remove them from licence table ? If yes, how can I find and delete this data, to finally liberate licenses ? Thanks in advance for your responses ... Regards. Re: dsmfmt question
Hi Eric, I re-read "TSM implementation guide" Redbook a couple of minutes ago, and they don't speek about any overhead space for a data volume, what they specify is that if you want to format a db volume, then the allocated file size is always a multiple of 4 MB plus an additional 1 MB for overhead. Something else comes to my mind : when preparing your VG, did'nt you forgot the "large file enable" parameter ? Hope this helped, but probably somebody has a better knowledge than I have Cheers. Regards. transmitting the result of an sql query to a script ? + loop struture ?
Hi TSM'ers ! I already saw this in a thread, but can't find it again : I'm looking for a convenient way to stop some reclamation processes in an automated way (script). As those reclamation processes are made on an offsite stg pool, no way stopping them by increasing the reclamation threshold to 100, so I thought to something like : select process_num from processes where process='Space Reclamation' , and then transmit this "process_num" to a cancel proc command. Is there a convenient way doing that, without calling an external AIX script ? More clever : if I have several of those reclamation processes, is there a way building a loop in the script, to cancell them all, while running the script once ? TIA. Re: AW: transmitting the result of an sql query to a script ? + loop struture ?
Hi Paul, And thanks for your script, if I don't find any other mean transmitting this parameter to a TSM script I'll use it (or something similar). But why on hell did TSM engineers not think to such a facility, that would avoid having part of TSM tools inside the server and other parts in O.S. itself ?!!! :-(( Regards. Re: transmitting the result of an sql query to a script ? + loop struture ?
Hi Martin, and all folks that already answered my question ... First of all, thanks a lot for everyone that sent me an answer, most of the time not the one I expected, but never mind ;-) Martin, you're absolutely right, but in my case the problem was not to avoid reclamation occuring, but to stop it once it's started (impossible on a copy stg pool, without a cancel command). Thanks anyway ! Regards. Arnaud -Original Message- From: Martin Trcka [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Montag, 26. informix backups ... not working with caching enabled ?
Hi *SM'ers, Just wondering if somebody encountered this problem : we are doing informix backups on a TSM 4.1.1 server, using onbar utility. Informix logical logs are written to a primary disk pool that has caching enabled, and a next storage pool defined to allow migration on tape. It seems that once the disk has been filled, informix is unable to find free space to send his logs, and migration never happens, even with a very low "high mig" value. I believe this is due to caching on this stg pool : when the "percent utilised" value reaches 100 %, even if this data is only cached files, neither TSM or Informix are able to overwrite it, and I get a message like : 11/27/01 11:47:08 ANR0534W Transaction failed for session 17528 for node SAP02 (TDP Infmx AIX42) - size estimate exceeded and server is unable to obtain additional space in storage pool SAP_LOGS_DISK. Once caching disabled, and cached files moved to the next storage pool, we never face this problem again. Did anybody already noticed this kind of strange behaviour before, and eventually found a solution to it ? TIA. using TSM as a Veritas repository= library filling up at speed of light !???? how does it work ?
Hi TSM'ers, We are trying to build a solution where Veritas BackupExec would be using TSM as a data repository, but are facing something very strange : although we respected all recommendations while binding applications together, it seems Veritas backups are filling up our library extremely fast. We have a 3575 l18 library on a new test TSM (4.1.0) sytem, only used by Veritas and an additional NT system with normal TSM BA client, and after 2 days of utilization, already have 6 primary pool tapes filled up with veritas backups (Veritas only backups 1 small Exchange server !). Doing a "q con" on the tapes used by veritas shows something like (snippet of it) : BACKUPEXEC Bkup LHR2K010 \{A92E0AEF-C7B5-47B1-879E-03D6AB71AD8- F}\ 12013 BACKUPEXEC Bkup LHR2K010 \{A92E0AEF-C7B5-47B1-879E-03D6AB71AD8- F}\ 12014 BACKUPEXEC Bkup LHR2K010 \{A92E0AEF-C7B5-47B1-879E-03D6AB71AD8- F}\ 12015 BACKUPEXEC Bkup LHR2K010 \{A92E0AEF-C7B5-47B1-879E-03D6AB71AD8- F}\ 12016 BACKUPEXEC Bkup LHR2K010 \{A92E0AEF-C7B5-47B1-879E-03D6AB71AD8- F}\ 12017 BACKUPEXEC Bkup LHR2K010 \{A92E0AEF-C7B5-47B1-879E-03D6AB71AD8- F}\ 12018 doing "show version BACKUPEXEC LHR2K010" shows nothing, and although those tapes are having thousands of files written on them, result of expiration process shows : 12/16/01 07:01:26 ANR0812I Inventory file expiration process 96 completed: examined 18 objects, deleting 0 backup objects, 0 archive objects, 0 DB backup volumes, and 0 recovery plan files. 0 errors were encountered. How is it possible expiration only went thru 18 objects, as we have thousands of them on tape ? I am missing something ? Shouldn't we normally have as many objects examined, as objects in TSM DB ? Now something worse, if I do a "select * from backups", I have (snippet of it) : NODE_NAME: BACKUPEXEC FILESPACE_NAME: LHR2K010 STATE: ACTIVE_VERSION TYPE: FILE HL_NAME: \{064A8A12-D91B-4936-BBC8-A0367F94B943}\ LL_NAME: 1000 OBJECT_ID: 51147 BACKUP_DATE: 2001-11-16 01:02:18.00 DEACTIVATE_DATE: OWNER: LHR2K010 CLASS_NAME: MC_VT of course thousands of entries like this one I am really confused, on one hand, lots of tapes filled, and lots of entries in the "backups" table, and on the other one, expiration that examines very few records, and a TSM db that is near to be empty ... Is it due to the fact Veritas uses a specific "backupexec_pi" storage pool for storing positional information, to locate it's data ? If yes, should I avoid doing offsite copies from this data, because it's never going to be expired ? No idea at all, but if anybody has been building such an application, all comments, explanations and setting descriptions will be REALLY WELCOME ! Thanks in advance . Arnaud
convert archive process ... what does it do ?

Hi Brian, hi all *SM'ers First of all, thanks a lot for anybody that helped me during last months, solving problems that sometimes went awful. I'm temporarily leaving the list for holidays, and wanted to wish everybody a merry Xmas, and happy new year ! See you later, cheers ! Arnaud. -Original Message- From: Scott, Brian [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, 19 December, 2001 19:02 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: convert archive process ... what does it do ? Arnaud, Here's what I found in the TSM 4.2 Reference Guide: CONVERT ARCHIVE (Allow Clients to Query Archive Files by Description ) Use this command to improve the efficiency of a command line or API client query of archive files and directories using the description option. Previously, an API client could not perform an efficient query at all and a Version 3.1 or later command line client could perform such a query only if the node had signed onto the server from a GUI at least once. Perform this conversion only once for each node. A GUI backup-archive client can already do a more efficient query without this command being issued. Privilege Class To issue this command, you must have system privilege, unrestricted policy privilege, or policy privilege for the policy domain to which the client belongs. Syntax CONVert Archive node_name Wait =No Yes Parameters node_name (Required) Specifies the name of the node to be converted. This name must not contain any wildcard characters. Wait Specifies whether to wait for the server to complete processing this command in the foreground. This parameter is optional. The default is NO. Possible values are: No Specifies that the server processes this command in the background. Yes Specifies that the server processes this command in the foreground Note: You cannot specify WAIT=YES from the server console. Examples Perform a background conversion of the client node JAN: Command: convert archive jan wait=no Related Commands None Hope this helps. ANR2576W An attempt was made to update an event record for a scheduled operation which has already been executed
Hi list ! Could someone help me with that one : I get a client node (win2k) for which TSM reports following message every night : 02/18/03 03:29:01 ANR2576W An attempt was made to update an event record for a scheduled operation which has already been executed - multiple client schedulers may be active for node PAC2K340. I'm certain that no multiple schedulers are started on this node, but from my analyse of the logs, I believe that, as soon as the node has finished it's backup, the session hangs, due to network problem, and when restarted becomes the same schedule again, and repeats the work. Re: Recovery log
Hi Mark, You are probably suffering from so called "log pinning" symptom. To make it short : log is working on a circular basis, and can only be freed if all transactions that where written into it are commited to TSM DB. If not done, you reach a point where the log bites it's own tail : older record are not freed, therefore making it impossible to create new ones, and the server dies. This is generally due to very long transactions, as for example huge or slow archives (probably your case). The antidote : extend your log, or modify Trougputdatathreshold and trougputtimethreshold options value in dsmserv.opt, to kill automatically the sessions having too low troughput during too much time. Another one would be switchin to "normal" logmode, if currently using rollforward, but this has it's own bad sides ... Anyway, do a search on topic "pinned log" in this list, and you'll find lots of responses to your question ! Hope it helped ... Re: Tape Reliability Recommendations
Hi Peter, I sincerely empathize, as I've been living the same martyrdom as you some months ago. We had a brand new 3584 library, equiped with scsi lto drives, attached to the server thru 2108 San data gateways and fiber channeling. After months of investigation, upgrades of all kinds, drive exchanges etc ... We finally found that the length of fiber cables was a little bit too long, therefore generating timeouts errors, and subsequent tape failures. Don't know if it could be your case, but worth throwing an eye on it, if not already done ! My 2 cents ! I doubt it, but one never knows, do one?\ I would be very curious to hear what type of reliability problems you have seen with LTO. I have posted here before, but we have been experiencing an incredibly high number of read errors with our 3584 LTO library. We regularly see errors when trying to restore data from tapes. We have been auditing volumes recently and have seen errors on a tape during one audit, and then audit again, with no errors. There is no discernable pattern to these errors (across multiple tapes and multiple drives). Due to the nature of the data we are backing up, the data does not change often (and therefore the tapes are generally written to once, and the data stays there), so over-used tapes should not be an issue. Anything that you could share with the list, or me directly, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. However, in my opinion, the "tipping point" where a TSM solution starts costing more than it would have before is *way* too low. I have not done an exacting analysis on where that point actually is, but for some customers, what was once 40-50K software purchase would now be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. The fact that it licensing is now CPU-based rather than "box-based" introduces a very ugly multiplier effect at customers where the typical Wintel server is 2-way or 4-way. What used to be a $217 client (for a 4-way Wintel machine) is now anywhere from $1400 to $2500 list (depending on the size of the library being used) in quantities of 1. Quantity discounts are, of course, available... The figures I quote are from the IBM Tivoli Price Estimator tool. "Prices are suggested prices only and are subject to change in IBM's sole discretion." Even if you're not adding clients, the licensing change introduces a very stiff increase in maintenance costs, as well. My opinion only... (But I have shared it with folks from IBM/Tivoli when I've had the chance.) Ted
Copy job "freezed"
Hi *Smers, Could anybody explain me why I consistently see "backup stg" jobs "freezing" ? What happens is that the job begins, but thereafter hangs for a while, doing nothing at all, and suddenly starts copying data on tape. I saw this behavior on severall flavors of TSM (actually on 4.2.3.1), without finding any good reason for it. Tape drives are available, other copy jobs for other pools are starting o.k., and this happens randomly on all storage pools. Richard, That would make sense, if the job was "freezing" in the middle of the copies, but apparently, it just waits a while before starting to write the first bit of data to tape, and then goes fine till the end ! Observing the drive during one of these instances could be illuminating. Richard Sims, BU
Re: HELP
Hi Bert, >But how do I get a list of old tapes to take out? I assume you mean copypool tapes that went checked out and stored offsite ... I don't know if you're using TSM's DRM feature, but case of an affirmative response, you should be in a position to issue "q drm wherestate=vaultretrive", to get the list of the volumes lying in your safe and having no more valid data. Before checkin them again in the library as scratch tapes, don't forget to issue "move drm * wherestate=vaultretrive tostate=onsiteretrive" to update TSM DB/volhist, letting them know those tapes are now empty. If unfortunately you do not have DRM licensed on the server, it gets a little bit more complicated, and, as I'm not used to those "manual" procedures, I prefer letting someone more experienced explain you how to do it (if not allready done, try to issue "h checkin libv", "h checkout libv" and "h q volhist" on TSM command line, could be usefull )... And last thing : if you check your tapes in the library, specifying "status=pri" they'll never appear as scratch volumes ! Hope it helped ! Cheers. Re: web admin gui won't work... any suggestions
Hi Joni, I'm living the same kind of experience as yours. TSM version 5.1.6.2, but on AIX platform ! I can use the web GUI, but if I have to push on "stop" button in my favorite browser for any reason, before getting a response from TSM server (sometimes have to do it for long SQL queries), this leaves kind of a "ghost" session that can't be killed, and only disapears if I recycle the server. I also lived a situation where I had many of those sessions (approx 30, dunno exactly), and where the server completely hang : no way to log in anymore, even thru command line interface, and all processes where hanged too : tapes, scripts, etc ... Very bad thing :-( I allready wrote about it on this list, without getting encouraging response ... But many people here are "old-timers" (not meant to be offensive for those readers) preferring monastic command line to those fancy little icons ;-) Cheers. Re: ANR8944E Hardware or media error on drive
Hi Klass, I would advise you to try an "audit volume fix=no" on that tape to find out if any file was damaged, then you have two possibilities : 1) no damaged file found : do a move data, to copy that data on another volume, then checkout of defective tape and give it back to you IBM rep. Those tapes have lifetime warranty and should be replaced for free ! 2) damaged files found : then, depending whether this was a primary pool volume or copy volume, you could : A) for primary volume : restore the volume from copy, check it out and let it be replaced as in 1) B) for copy volume : audit volume fix=yes, so that TSM removes all entries pointing to corrupted files from it's DB, move data to transfer valid files to another volume, checkout and replace from defective tape. For corrupted files not having been copied, if you are lucky TSM still has original in primary pool and will create a new copy during next copy stgpool operation, if not, consider your data as lost :-( Anyway try to have a look at audit volume and restore volume commands help file, to be sure understanding possible issues you could face in those processes. Re: hmmm... ANR0534W
Hi Remco, This message could also be the sign of a filled storage pool : on a disk based pool, check if your migration thresholds are low enough to avoid them beeing filled, and also check if caching is enabled : using cached disks with application like TDP for informix leads to this kind of error. On tape based storage pools, check you haven't reached the max number of tapes allocated for your storage pool, and also that you have enough scratch tapes ;-) Hope this helped ! Cheers. Hi all, Sorry to bother you with aforementioned product, but responsible person seems to be away for some days, and I need urgent response ... I just installed it on my machine and find it very helpful for certain purposes, like automatic notification on failed events, detailed reports, etc... (something you could do on your own, but with much more pain !) TSM operational reporting is a simple tool designed to help you keep TSM running smoothly on a day-to-day basis. It runs on Windows and supports TSM servers on all platforms. You can find a detailed description and download information by going to: http://www-1.ibm.com/support/entdocview.wss?uid=swg24004874 or if there are any problems with that link you can go to your favorite IBM web site, for example: http://www.ibm.com or http://www-3.ibm.com/software/tivoli/products/storage-mgr and enter the following number into the search field: 4004874 Then click on the Operational Reporting Preview link. You will be prompted for an IBM registration ID and you can request one at that time if needed. Please note that the technology preview is unsupported and is subject to change. The license agreement that is displayed during setup provides detailed information related to this. All questions and feedback should be directed to [EMAIL PROTECTED] as ADSM-L will not be monitored for this purpose. A best effort will be made to acknowledge receipt for all mail received at the opreport address. Note that response time will likely be slow for the next two weeks but it will pick up after that. A small user's guide will be made available on the technology preview web page by the end of day on the 15th. There are a couple of small updates that are required for using the default reports for TSM servers running on OS390 and PACE and the information will be available in that document. There is a walk through presentation available now and it provides a good introduction to getting operational reporting up and running. Looking forward to your feedback. Strange query output, using ODBC interface with M$ Access ...
Hi list, I'm currently using TSM ODBC (V 5.1.6.0) interface with an Access 2002 database (V 10.4302.4219 sp-2), and built a query looking like : SELECT SUMMARY.START_TIME, SUMMARY.END_TIME, SUMMARY.ACTIVITY, SUMMARY.ENTITY, SUMMARY.BYTES, DateDiff("w",[START_TIME],Now()) AS timediff FROM SUMMARY WHERE (((SUMMARY.ACTIVITY)="STGPOOL BACKUP") AND ((DateDiff("w",[START_TIME],Now()))<1)); Basically, this should extract all "stgpool backup" jobs registered in summary table, which have been started during the last day. Now, this is what that query returned (snippet of it, sorry for bad formating) : 1/7/2003 11:04:11 1/7/2003 11:04:17 BACKUP PACRS270 102604912 15/7/2003 5:00:14 15/7/2003 8:59:32 STGPOOL BACKUP TAPELTO1_INF_DB -> COPYLTO1_INF_DB 2023371194890 15/7/2003 8:59:32 15/7/2003 8:59:50 STGPOOL BACKUP DISKPOOL_ARCH -> COPYLTO1_ARCH 0 0 15/7/2003 8:59:32 15/7/2003 9:00:46 STGPOOL BACKUP DISKPOOL_SQL_LOGS -> COPYLTO1_SQL_LOGS 553779200 15/7/2003 8:59:32 15/7/2003 9:01:32 STGPOOL BACKUP DISKPOOL_DB2_L0 -> COPYLTO1_DB2_L0 798760960 1/7/2003 11:04:57 1/7/2003 11:05:03 BACKUP PACRS270 102604912 15/7/2003 8:59:32 15/7/2003 9:03:58 STGPOOL BACKUP DISKPOOL_SQL_META -> COPYLTO1_SQL_META 540672 0 1/7/2003 11:05:42 1/7/2003 11:05:49 BACKUP PACRS170 102604912 15/7/2003 8:59:32 15/7/2003 9:07:49 STGPOOL BACKUP DISKPOOL_DIR -> COPYLTO1_DIR9502720 0 15/7/2003 8:59:32 15/7/2003 9:19:41 STGPOOL BACKUP DISKPOOL_DBLOGS -> COPYLTO1_DBLOGS 10808274944 0 1/7/2003 11:05:13 1/7/2003 11:05:17 BACKUP PACRS270 817247 2 So, as one can see, it does neither respect the "ACTIVITY="STGPOOL BACKUP"" statement nor the "((DateDiff("w",[START_TIME],Now()))<1))" statement, and when looking into TSM activity log, it generates this entry : 07/21/03 17:02:46 ANR2017I Administrator BAR021 issued command: DEFINE CURSOR C9fd726c SQL="SELECT START_TIME,END_TIME,ACTIVITY- ,NUMBER,ENTITY,BYTES FROM ADSM.SUMMARY WHERE NUMBER = 1403 OR NUMBER = 1402 OR NUMBER = 1405 OR NUMBER = 1502 OR NUMBER = 1516 OR NUMBER = 1512 OR NUMBER = 1527 OR NUMBER = 1532 OR NUMBER = 1534 OR NUMBER = 1530" As you can see, this absolutely doesn't match what I've asked for ! (And curiously, if I try to export data from the same query, using rich text format, it generates another output, still inacurate !) Does anybody (Andy ?) have an explanation for such a strange behavior ? Thanks in advance. Cheers. Effect of multiple migration processes to a collocated pool - serial or parallel node migration ?
Hi list, A quickie one : when migrating multiple nodes data from non-collocated disk pool to collocated tape pool, using migproc=2, in which order will data be migrated ? 1) node 1 data on 2 different tapes, then node 2 data on 2 different tapes etc 2) node 1 data on one tape and node 2 data on another tape, then node 3 data on another tape etc I would tend to say 1) is the right response, as the order of nodes processed is per largest amount of data in the disk storage pool, but wanted to make it sure ... If my assumption is right, is there any way achieving parallel mounts for nodes migration (option 2) instead of serial mounts (option 1) ? This would avoid waste of tapes (2 tapes created for 1 node migrated, in a collocated pool looks strange to me), and also from time (tape reclamation will probably recombine those tapes to a new one after a while) Thanks in advance ! Diskpools are always "collocated" :-))) Option 1 is incorrect. It can happen only if next pool is *non-collocated*! Look at list archives and you will see that the answer to question "why my multi-session client is having all but one in MediaW" is to disable the collocation. Option 2 is somewhat correct. Each migration batch is processed by a process and next process can work only if there is another batch. If the next storage pool is collocated by node, a complete node constitutes a batch. If the storage pool is collocated by filespace, each filespace is a separate batch. Example: A node is having three filesystems /data1, /data2 and /data3, 100 GB each. The diskpool is having migproc=3. If the tapepool is having collocation=filespace, three separate processes will be lauched and each will migrate 100 GB. If the tapepool is having collocation=yes, only one process will be lauched and it will migrate all 300 GB. Only if there is another node's data in diskpool, a second process can start to migrate it. Re: Backups bypassing disk pool
Hi Bill, Could it be possible that you defined a very low "maximum size threshold" on your disk pool, that would force data migration to tape ? My 2 cents ... Cheers. My server is AIX 5.1.6.2. and most of the windows clients are running at 5.1.5.9. The clients are associated to a management class that's default management class should cause the backups to go to the disk storage pool. There is a management class within the domain that directs the backups to the tape pool, but I do not have it included in the dsm.opt file, in fact I do not have any management class defined, meaning that it should go to the default. Has anyone experienced this problem? Also, I tried an incremental of the c drive with the disk storage pool empty and it's estimated capacity is 38 gb and it still called for a tape. The capacity of the c drive of the client is under 1.5 gb. Thanks, Bill Sherrill

Re: tsm client in linux
Hi Geetha, TSM scheduler on linux should be started as a service, and the better way to achieve this is to build a little script that would be placed in the inittab, so that when the system boots the service is started. I attached the script we're using to this mail, feel free to use it ! If you insist starting the scheduler manually you could consider the use of "at" command. This way you can start scheduler in a different process that would'nt be killed when the initiating process is killed. Command would look like : "echo /path_to/dsmc sch -RunAsService > /dev/null 2>&1" | at now Hope this helped ! Cheers. Re: NAS/NDMP backups
Hi Zoltan, This may not be the most sophisticated way, but works perfectly on our system, without having to play with ndmp, images backup etc ... We defined a windows node (machine having good networking capability) which will be the central "file ditributor" for NAS backups, granted this machine an access on the different filespaces defined into the NAS, and finally backuped the data (incremental file backup)using standard TSM client. The only thing you'll have to do is to modify the dsm.opt file, that it includes your UNC names ... It would look like : DOMAIN C: DOMAIN D: DOMAIN \\nas_server_name\filespace_name1$ DOMAIN \\nas_server_name\filespace_name2$ DOMAIN \\nas_server_name\filespace_name3$ Off course this could be made on AIX system, using NFS mounts ... I just had a co-worker come to me to let me know the NAS HEAD was installed and configured and ready to be backed-up. Now what ? I have absolutely no experience with this type of box. I had been digging in the manuals and found lots of info refering to using the NDMP process/interface of TSM to perform essentially, IMAGE type dumps/backups. The books also say this only allows for IMAGE type restores, not FILE level. I also see that TSM 5.2 now supports file-level restores from NDMP backups (all references on the IBM/TIVOLI site still say this is "coming in next release.someone needs to update this). I need some guidance on setting up NAS backups. Also, has anyone tried file-level restores via 5.2 ? We can't install 5.2 yet since all of our AIX systems are still 4.3. We are going to upgrade one of the test servers, soon.

Hi Eric, I'm seeing the same kind of things (double messages in one line), but for informix backups ! I already posted on that topic on 21th of this month (search for informix + hieroglyphs to find my post), without any answer :-( I suppose this is a new "feature" from TSM, but is it due to server, client or API, no idea ! TSM client unable to expire file having wildcard character in it's name
Hi all, I'm facing a problem with one of our TSM clients (v 4.1.2.0 on AIX 4.3.3 , yes I know it's not supported anymore), wich consistently issues the same error message while trying to expire a file created by some IT beginner, using a wildcard character. Joni, I usually use single quotes, but have some scrits where double quotes are used, all without problem ! This an example of the scripts we're using : CMD="dsmadmc -id=xxx -password=xxx -datao=yes" $CMD "select process_num from processes where process='Backup Storage Pool'" Note the "-datao=yes" parameter, which avoids having TSM header in your output (works with TSM version > 5.2) Hope this helped ! Current status of reclamation process with original copies on disk
Hi list, Could anyone tell me if the performance problem related to reclamation of copypool data when primary copy resides on disk has been solved ? I'm asking this because we migrated our TSM server (v 5.2.2.1) on a beefy p5 550 series, with disk pools large enough to keep one day data, and reclamation of certain copy pools is horribly slow (lto1 drives, gives me 2 MB/s for AIX and Windows data, if lucky). Problem is that my daily job (copy tapes generation + db backup + expiration ...) finishes approx. at 10 AM. So, for having decent reclamation performance during the next step, I would need to flush the data from disk to tape much too early in the day, therefore penalizing an eventual restore process during the afternoon. I need to reclaim approx. 100 GB/day for aix copypool only, and with my actual throughput, that would mean more than 10 hours processing : I can't afford that ! Cheers. Directory path backed up again and again ...
Hi *SM'ers, I recently found that one (surely others too) of our AIX clients was getting part of it's directory structure backed up everyday although it did not change, but can't find the reason why. As Andy says it in his excellent web page : A normal Incremental Backup will *not* back up directories whose timestamp has changed since the last backup. We're performing incremental backups, copymode used for this client is set to modified, so I can't understand what's happening ! The worse is that the mgmt-class having the longest retention period (retonly 768) in this domain is used for storing that data, so I end up with thousands (probably more if other servers are affected !) entries in TSM DB which are worthless. This in an example of what I get, using "show version" (snippet of it) on this server: /export/mksysb : / (MC: BACKUP_2_YEARS) Inactive, Inserted 01/07/05 20:51:51, Deactivated 01/10/05 20:37:15 ObjId: 0.539953678, GroupMap , objType 0x01 /export/mksysb : / (MC: BACKUP_2_YEARS) Inactive, Inserted 01/10/05 20:37:15, Deactivated 01/12/05 20:37:32 ObjId: 0.541340571, GroupMap , objType 0x01 /export/mksysb : / (MC: BACKUP_2_YEARS) Inactive, Inserted 01/12/05 20:37:32, Deactivated 01/14/05 20:37:16 ObjId: 0.542636928, GroupMap , objType 0x01 /export/mksysb : / (MC: BACKUP_2_YEARS) Inactive, Inserted 01/14/05 20:37:16, Deactivated 01/15/05 20:38:31 ObjId: 0.544018035, GroupMap , objType 0x01 /export/mksysb : / (MC: BACKUP_2_YEARS) Inactive, Inserted 01/15/05 20:38:31, Deactivated 01/16/05 20:38:29 ObjId: 0.544640259, GroupMap , objType 0x01 /export/mksysb : / (MC: BACKUP_2_YEARS) Inactive, Inserted 01/16/05 20:38:29, Deactivated 01/17/05 20:38:53 ObjId: 0.545097616, GroupMap , objType 0x01 This is a NIM server, where "MKSYSB" files from other servers are stored everyday, so the content of the directory is changing, but not it's structure.
