The timer to expire the older version starts when it was replaced. Thus the
older version is available for 3 months, per the above example.

Re: deleting an undefined volume

2001-04-11 Thread Joel Fuhrman

Do something like:
   del volhist todate=-4 type=dbbackup
where the -4 is the number of days ago that you did the backup.

Warning: This will release >ALL< database backup volumes prior to then.
However, it this volume is your only backup, it will not be released.

Re: DIRMC - disadvantages only?

2001-04-11 Thread Joel Fuhrman

Back in November you described this implementation, which makes a major
reduction in the time required to do a DIRMC offsite copy reclamation:

> DIRPOOL primary DISK: NEXTPOOL->DIRFILE
> DIRFILE primary SEQUENTIAL on DISK
> DIRCOPYPOOL copypool TAPE

Would you mind posting the output from a:
 query stg DIRFILE format=detail

and a:
 query devclass

I'm assuming "SEQUENTIAL on DISK" means a device class type of FILE. But I
want to be sure, before making the change.

ANS0106E ReadIndex 1497 and 15647 message index not found

2001-04-26 Thread Joel Fuhrman

Has anybody encountered these errors and did you find a solution to the
problem?

Since moving to TSM windows client level 4.1.2.12, I'm encountering this
error when backing up to AIX running TSM Server 3.7.3.8:

ANS0106E: ReadIndex 1497 message index not found for message 1497

A backup of the same TSM windows client to AIX running TSM Server 4.1.3
gets:

ANS0106E: ReadIndex 15647 message index not found for message 15647

The problem occurs on both NT4+sp6a and Windows 2000+sp1.

There is one benefit to backing up the system objects every night. Should
you ever need to do a bare metal restore, the system objects will be cached
on disk. Of course, all the other user files has been pushed out of the
cache; but who cares if user restores require tape mounts.

removing last/only DBSnapshop

2001-06-04 Thread Joel Fuhrman

I did a snap shot database backup to see what impact, if any, it would have
on the logfile. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that it is not possible to
delete this backup using normal commands. I don't want a volume containing
useless data in my library from now until TSM doomsday.

Does anybody know of a back door method to remove the last/only DBSnapshot
volume from the TSM database.

Unfortunately, the works for all but the last/only volume. In the output
from the TSM server command 'help del volh', it reads "The latest snapshot
database backup will not be deleted.".

TDP for MS SQL cross server restore

2001-06-11 Thread Joel Fuhrman

I have 2 Windows 2000 servers each running MS SQL7. The old machine,
Host-A, is running TDP for MS SQL version 1.1.2.01 while the new machine,
Host-B, is running version 2.2.

I want to restore a database that was backed up on Host-A to Host-B. When I
attempt to view the backup tree for Host-A on Host-B's tdpsql gui screen,
nothing is displayed and the TSM server logs this error:

ANRD smnode.c(5323): Error validating inserts for event 14995.

Any suggestions as to what is wrong?

reason, I encourage the DBA's to break their dumps into smaller chunks

Re: Reclaims Ques

2001-06-20 Thread Joel Fuhrman

No.

Reclaim is the process of recovering unused portions of tapes by copying the
good stuff to a new tape.

Colocation is an option reduces the number of tapes occupied by the backups
for a system. This will make restores faster since it reduces the number of
tape mounts at the expense of additional tape mounts for backups and more
partially filled tapes. Some sites use it for critcal servers.

I suggest reading the Getting Started redbook.  That's not its full name;
but if you search for that you should be able to find it.

tdpsql v2.2 gui opens then immediately closes

2001-06-27 Thread Joel Fuhrman

tpdsql version 2.2 was working but now the gui window opens and then
immediately closes.

The tdpsql.log file show the request QUERY SQL but there is no connection to
the TSM 4.1.3.0 Server running on AIX 4.3.3 ML06 and there is no entry in
the dsierror.log file. A command line tdpsqlc QUERY SQL gets the same
results. However, a tdpsqlc QUERY TSM * /all does list the backups.

Any suggestions as to what would cause this?

log and db volumes on emc symmetrix disk

2001-06-28 Thread Joel Fuhrman

A long time back there was a discussion as to whether it's better to have
one or multiple tsm volumes per physical disk. As I remember, the answer
was: assuming the entire physical disk volume was being used by one storage
pool, it was best to create one large tsm volume rather than several smaller
volumes to avoid disk IO contention.

I will be moving my db and log volumes stand alone disk to an emc symmetrix.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to number of tsm volumes that should be
created for each emc logical drive? Would it be best to put 1 4GB, 2 2GB,
or 4 1GB database TSM volumes on 1 emc logical volume?

Here is our solution to this problem which was the sql server name as stored

backing up only 1 directory on Windows

2001-08-14 Thread Joel Fuhrman

I have a Windows system running TSM client 4.2.0.0 from which I want to
backup just the directory 'C:\Users' and all of its subdirectories and
files. I don't want to backup any other directories or files from that
system. I tried these dsm.opt specifications:

   exclude.dir "C:\*"
   include.dir "C:\Users\...*"

A gui initiated incremental backup, excluded everything, including
C:\Users\...\*, from the C: drive.

Can you suggest the settings that will do what I want?

Re: tape drive unavailable WHEN THEY ARE!!!!!

Maybe its a false error. Do you have enough tapes available to the tape
pool? Do a "query f=d" and look for Maximum Scratch Volumes
Allowed: and see how that compares to the number of tapes in use.

Also try a "query drive" to make sure all the drives are available and
defined to the correct devtype.

Re: how to EXPIRE UNIX files from unmounted/deleted file system

2001-08-17 Thread Joel Fuhrman

The delete filespace is a great command for getting rid of old data and
freeing up lots of tape space. I know, as I wiped out the archives for 5 or
6 servers before realizing that it wasn't just deleting backups.

This command should require an entry in the TYPE= field instead of
defaulting to all. Also the query filespace command should have a
TYPE= parameter which defaults to ALL (for backupward compatability).

aix 3.1.0.7 client with 4.1.x server

Is anyone backing up an AIX node using ADSM client level 3.1.0.7 to a 4.1.x
TSM Server? If yes, have you done a restore.

As I read the web page

Re: aix 3.1.0.7 client with 4.1.x server

I prefer to be on current levels. However, I have some old AIX boxes that
have to stay on AIX 4.2.1 because of other software and/or they are not
worth the cost of the upgrade. Since Tivoli choice to require 4.3.x, I now
have an unresolvable conflict between to software packages.

If the list administrator could add a Precedence=bulk header, then most Unix

Re: periodic ADSM/TSM shutdown

2000-10-13 Thread Joel Fuhrman

We had several occurances over many months that required bouncing the server
because a non-existant transaction had a high numbered log page locked.
This occurred after a problem with our ACSLS systems or a tape drive; but
not after every problem. You have the problem when the percent utilization
of the log file doesn't reduce to near zero after a database backup. Since
moving to 3.7.1 we have not had the problem.

One other comment. If you modify the contents of the inclexcl file, you
must restart the scheduler service because it only reads this file on

Re: TSM 3.73. include/exclude statements: where should they be?

I have this statement in the server name stanza in the file dsm.sys
   Inclexcl /var/tsm/backup.exclude
Naturally the directory and file name can be anything you like. This
applies to Unix. NT/Windows does not use the include/exclude file.

query archive /*

2000-12-04 Thread Joel Fuhrman

TSM 3.7.2.0 client on AIX; TSM 3.7.3.8 server on AIX

The command
   dsmc q arch '/*' -subdir=yes

shows the archives for all but one filesystem. To see the missing
filesystem requires
   dsmc q arch '/advscratch2/*' -subdir=yes

Any thoughts as to why the /advscratch2 archive would not be listed by the
first command?

Re: query archive /*

2000-12-05 Thread Joel Fuhrman

Boy is that lame! It looks like the first file system used for an archive
is the file system used from then on. So if the client doesn't know from
which file system the first archive was done, they are going to have a tough
time guessing where to find it.

Re: query archive /*

2000-12-06 Thread Joel Fuhrman

Reversing the options had no affect.

The problem is that the "client" can not find all occurrences of an archive
unless they remember every filesystem that ever existed.

The dba's dump the database to a file and then archive it, re-using the
description for a previous archives of this database. If the dump/archive
is done using different file systems due to space constraints (or it was
unmounted and it went to root), the client has to remember both filesystem
names. If it happens to be a 3 year archive and one of the filesystems is
renamed or removed, the client is going to have to have a good memory and
g-d forbid they should quit.

It seems to me that there should be some syntax that the "client" can use to
find all their archive. A simple 'q arch' and 'q arch desc="some desc"'
would do nicely.

Re: LOG usage over 100% - backups failing

2000-12-11 Thread Joel Fuhrman

When I had this problem, several times, stopping and restarting the server
freed the pinned transaction log record. The problem I had (on a older
level) was that the log file did not reduce after a database backup. Other
things to consider is reducing your activity log retention value and to turn
off roll forward logging; at least until you figure out your problem.

emulex LP8000 HBA

2000-12-13 Thread Joel Fuhrman

I'm trying to configure a new H80 AIX 4.3.3 host with TSM 4.1.1 using an
Emulex LP8000 host bus adapter connected to an STK 9840 fibre channel disk
drive. Per the installation instructions in the Quick Start Guidem I loaded
the fibre channel pre-req's for the fcrte fileset; but they seem to be for
the Emulex LP7000 card. Config manager, cfgmgr, wants the level 8 drivers
which I don't believe IBM released. So I loaded the drivers from Emulex.
Cfgmgr will configure the devices; but "smit tsm_devices" fails to list or
find any fiber channel devices.

If you have a working config using the Emulex LP8000 would you mind sharing
how you set it up?

Re: emulex LP8000 HBA

2000-12-13 Thread Joel Fuhrman

It took a process of comparing the different cards on the Emulex web
page. Since its a short card with only 2 jumpers, it was an lp8000. After
running cfgmgr, an lsdev -C shows lpfc0 as Emulex LP8000 Fibre Channel
Adapter.

Rejean Larivee - your analysis is correct.

I loaded the Emulex device drivers, devices.pci.lpfc.diag and
devices.pci.lpfc.rte. I did that because `cfgmrg` needed the filesets,
devices.pci.df1000f8, devices.pci.fibre-channel, and
devices.pci.pciclass.0c0400 but they are on the AIX 4.3.3 cdrom nor could I
find them on the web site. Were can I find these drivers?

What level is your customer on? They "modified" the interface slightly in
one of the 3.7 levels such that the free library won't work. Now you have
to pay an outlandish price for the TDP which is just a library almost
identical in size to the one that was free.

Is there a command to create an activity log entry. I didn't see anything

Re: TDP for Informix on HP-UX

2000-12-15 Thread Joel Fuhrman

We continued to use the library from the previous version until we ordered
the TDP product. I can't remember if we had to use xbsa.o or bsashr10.o or
both. We use AIX, so there may be some differences. Since we were not
confortable relying on backups done with an unsupported configuration, we
paid the road bandit (Tivoli) and bought TDP for Informix.

The include/exclude file is read when the program starts thus it must be

Yes, the GUI marks excluded files with a red x and excluded file systems are
not shown in the list of files. Again, you must restart the GUI each time
you change the include/exclude file.

I have a powderhorn library but I believe the TSM setup is the same. Before
doing the TSM config, configure the drives via "smit tsm_devices"..

tsm> register license file=1library.lic

tsm> define drive acs0 mt0 device=/dev/mt0 acsdrvid=0,2,3,0 online=yes

Your acsid may be different and your acsdrvid most likely will be different.

Your "q inclexcl" is showing the results of mixing the server optionset with
the clients inclexcl list so you are not going to see duplicates in that
output. What is on your clients inclexcl list?

With those statements shown below, you shouldn't be getting duplicates.
I'm about out of ideas. It would seems as though a different dsm.opt files
is being used. I would rename (hide) this dsm.opt and see if the client
connects to the server.

TDP for Oracle and passwordaccess generate

2001-01-23 Thread Joel Fuhrman

The TDP for Oracle Version 2.1 documentation says the PasswordAccess must be
set to Prompted. Usually you want "PasswordAccess Generate" which is
current setting for the Scheduler Service on this AIX host.

Is "PasswordAccess Prompted" a true requirement or a just case of bad
documentation.

TDP for Oracle license

2001-01-26 Thread Joel Fuhrman

I've registered the server license for TDP for Oracle. Is there also a
client license?

The DBA's haven't been able to get the RMAN script to connect to the TSM
server. They called Oracle and Oracle said the TDP for Oracle must be
installed from the cdrom in order to get the license. I installed from a
down load file. I didn't install from the CD because it is the ADSM
version.

TSM client: 4.1.2.0
TSM Server: 3.7.3.8
TDP Oracle: 2.1.1.0
AIX:4.3.3.6

Re: tape mount retention behaviour

2001-02-05 Thread Joel Fuhrman

I thought it always worked this way. At one time I was going to put in a
request to have two mount retention times. One for when there are no
pending request for a drive and the other for when there are pending
request.

Re: tape mount retention behaviour

2001-02-05 Thread Joel Fuhrman

I'm using ACSLS (STK). When I'm doing something like a simultaneous
migration of 3 storage pools to 2 tape drives, the behavior I observed, in
the past, is that when the first migration completes, it tape was not
unmounted until the mount retention period expires. Thus the third
migration has to wait the mount retention period before it could get a tape.
I get around this by reducing the mount retention to zero during those
process that create tape queueing. I will have to check if this behavior
still exists in my current level.

I agree with the concept. However I would like a distinct parameters say

process, session, and filesize values and DATESeparator [YES | NO] which
would effect the output for the date (and possible time).

2 volume ranges with distinct usage in 1 library

2002-09-12 Thread Joel Fuhrman

I have 2 sites each one contains an STK silo. Currently I write my offsite
storage tapes where the operators are located. The local copy is written at
the other site. Each site has a unique tape number range which makes it
easy to track the offsite volumes. However because the operator's site has a
new backup generator, we now want to write the local copy at this site.

Is there a way to have one volume number range of scratch tapes be used for
the primary backup while using a second volume number range of scratch tapes
for the offsite copy pool all within one silo?

I know its possible to define 2 libraries which share the same ACSLSid. But
this solutiuon seems to require splitting the drives between the 2 libraries
and that is not an acceptable. Or is there a way to define the same drive
in 2 libraries without creating a drive contention problem?

Re: Backup reporting: SUMMARY TABLE ISSUE IS FOUND

To me is seems as though the worker sessions should be informing the control

avoiding this annoying timeout.

Re: Problem deleting filespace SYSTEM OBJECT

2002-09-20 Thread Joel Fuhrman

Yes I have this problem. The reason I needed to delete the system objects
was because they were not being deleted by EXPIRE INVENTORY and they were
consuming 30% of my database space.

My suggestion to all TSM admins is to do a
   QUERY OCCUPANCY * "SYSTEM OBJECT"
to verify that you do not have excessive copies.

On 5.1.1.4, I did the CLEANUP BACKUPGROUP and I still could not delete the
system objects. I reran the cleanup command numerous times and each time it
reported inspecting and deleting fewer objects than the previous run. The
number was still in the 2000 range when I gave up and installed 5.1.1.6.
On this level, expiration still failed to delete the system objects but I
could manually delete most of them. As of now I have 6 servers where I can
not delete the system objects. I have an open PMR.

Re: Anyone tried 5.1.1.6?

I found that the SYSTEM OBJECT which were not unicode were never deleted
unless I did it manually. A QUERY OCC * "SYSTEM OBJECT" (without the
NAMETYPE=UNICODE option) will let you know if you have that problem. Also,
did you run the command CLEANUP BACKUPGROUPS? For me, on 5.1.1.4 it ran but
never cleaned everything up and it wouldn't run on 5.1.1.6. I finally had
to do an AUDITDB FIX=YES.

For most of my servers, the system object consists of about 1800 objects and

Re: Space reclamation runs, but tapes don't free up

2002-10-02 Thread Joel Fuhrman

You can find it documented in the back of the Admin. Reference. I did an
audit before upgrading from 4.1.1.5 to 5.1.1.2 and I had to do it again on
5.1.1.6. So if you are going to do an audit, I would recommend waiting until
you are on 5.1.1.6

Re: Renaming a TSM server.

You can also set up a CNAME in DNS to map the old name to the new name. Then
you can change the client files as time permits.

Read up on 'reclamation' which is controlled by a storage pool option. If
you are running the most current TSM server version, check the 'move data'
command options.

backup of win2k system files fails

2002-02-24 Thread Joel Fuhrman

One windows 2000 server backup fails when trying to backup the system files.
The backup is being run under the administrator account. Nothing of
interest is logged in the TSM folders or in the TSM server application log.
The windows application log contains the following entry. Any suggestions
as how to solve this problem would be appreciated.

scheduler service overwrites baclient's password

2002-03-15 Thread Joel Fuhrman

The password key which is located in the registry at
HKLM\software\ibm\adsm\backupclient\nodes\W7\adsm is removed
when the scheduler service is started. The scheduled log contains:

03/15/2002 18:11:11 Querying server for next scheduled event.
03/15/2002 18:11:11 Node Name: W7
03/15/2002 18:11:11 Please enter your user id : ANS1029E
Communications have been dropped.
03/15/2002 18:11:11 Scheduler has been stopped.

Removing and re-installing the Scheduler Service and TSM (version 4.2.1.20)
did not help.

BACKGROUND: The system was created using a clone disk on which the TSM
installed. After the disk is cloned, the hostname is changed along with
the sids. The host then joins the domain. The TSM client is used to
register with the TSM server. Finally, the TSM scheduler service is created
and it wipes out the password.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Tapes Blank Under Last Use

2002-03-26 Thread Joel Fuhrman

In our case, these occur when there is a problem mounting a database backup
tape. The TSM server request the mount and marks the volume private. When
the mount fails, TSM neither enters it as a dbbackup in the volhistory nor
does it return it to the scratch pool. I learned this when a faulty drive
caused all scratch tapes to become private. When this happens, I just check
the tape out and then check it back in as scratch. TSM will not check it in
unless its empty.

Re: 4.2.1.32 problem with systemobject on Citrix

2002-05-01 Thread Joel Fuhrman

I do _not_ run Citrix. However, I had the same problem on a server whose
systemdisk was D:. One of the 4 start up files (boot.ini, ntldr, etc.) was
missing. Installing the missing file allows the backup of the
systemobjects.

I think the missing file is displayed by NT's backup utility.
