HP-UX11 and TDPoracle

2001-03-21 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hy all,
today I tried to install Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle (2.1.10) on a
HP-UX 11-Server. On this Server is already TSM-Client 3.7.2 installed for
file-system backups.
During the installation process the program detects a newer version of the
api (3.7.2) and doesn't install TDPoracle.
In the "Installation and User's Guide" is written, that it requires
api-version 3.7.1 (only).
Do I really have to downgrade TSM-client-version to 3.7.1 or is there a
workaround ? Does this work in a 64-bit HP-UX environment (Oracle 32-bit) ?

Thanks for help

Point-In-Time-Restore

2001-03-26 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hy all,

today again a question concerning Point-In-Time-Restore :

Following situation :

I did make backups of a node for more than half a year. Many files have
prduced versions on the backup-server, a lot of files did not because they
did not change since start of backup. My policy says it will keep 10
versions for lets say 3 month.

Now I start a full backup of the whole client. I produce a new version of
all files. For many of those files that had only produced one version up to
this date, the retention-period will cause this older version to be deleted.

Now I have to make a point-in-time restore to five days before. The old
version of some files is deleted (because of retention-period), the new (but
identical) file came later into the backup-server. Will my restore get this
file or will it be missed ??

This question came up because some people around me wanted to make a full
backup on a regular base.

Server : AIX 4.3.3 TSM 3.7.4
Clients : TSM 3.7

Can anybody give me an answer (otherwise I have to build up some
test-scenarios) ?

Thanks

Christoph

GUI on Solaris 8

2001-04-05 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hy all,

a collegue of mine has to install the TSM-Client for SUN-Solaris 8.0 .
Client OS-Level is Solaris 8, TSM-Client-Level is 4.1.2.12, TSM-Server : AIX
4.3.3, TSM 3.7.4

After installation the gui-client on the SUN runs fine if I start it from an
X-window.
If I start it from CDE it opens the window only with icons not with the
description of the icons and writes the following error-messages :
Warning : Name : FONTLIST_DEFAULT_TAG_STRING
   CLASS : XmRendition
   Conversion failed. Cannot load fonts.
Warning : No font found

By clicking on one icon, the machine writes a core-dump.

What to do, that dsm can find fonts on this client , or whats wrong ?

Thanks for help

AW: Can I install TDP for Oracle on HP 9000/800 (64bit) and Oracl e 8. 0.5 (64bit) ?

2001-04-11 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hy Michael,

I had the same problem 3 weeks ago.
You can use TDP for Oracle on HP 64bit environment, no problem but :
you have to use the correct API.

Here is what I got from the list :

Hi Christoph,

Yes. you can not run the TDPO 2.1.10 with the 3.7.2 client

I logged a PMR with tivoli for this and this is the response I got.

Customer is right. TDP for Oracle 2.1.10 on HP-UX requires the 3.7.1 API
A higher level of the API like 3.7.2 API will not work. There is already
a doc APAR IC27223 opened against this issue. The local fix of this APAR
is to run the v3.7.2 Client in combination with the v3.7.1 API:
- Save the TSM v3.7.1 API library (libApiDS.sl) to a separate directory,
it should be installed by default in /opt/tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin
- Install the latest version of the TSM v3.7.2 client.
- Replace the current TSM v3.7.2 API library with the TSM API v3.7.1
library saved in the first step.
NOTE: This solution will only work if the TSM v3.7.2 client does not
require the use of the v3.7.2 API. For instance, logical volume backups
(image backups) require the v3.7.2 API.

I especially like the first sentence...

This is what I do.

1. install TSM 3.7.1.0 b/a client including api.
2. install IBMADSMaob 2.1.0.7 (this is where the agent.lic file is)
3. copy the /opt/tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin/libApiDS.sl to
/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin/libApiDS.sl.371
4. upgrade TSM b/a client to 3.7.2.x (i'm running 3.7.2.16)
5. copy /opt/tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin/libApiDS.sl
/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin/libApiDS.sl.3.7.2
6. cp /opt/tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin/libApiDS.sl.371
/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin/libApiDS.sl

This works, but you can't use the logical volume backups.

This will work for oracle 32 bit only.

=

Best wishes

Christoph

reconcile volumes

2001-05-07 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hy all,

Background : 2 AIX-Servers as TSM-Server (TSM 3.7.4). Each server sends its
copy-pool date via Server-to-Server to a storage-pool on the other server
(seq access primary pool --> Magstar-Tape). I have a reclamation threshold
at 80% on the seq acc stg pool and a threshold of 90% for the
copy-pool-volumes on the originating server.

My question about 'reconcile volumes' :

every day before backing up my TSM-database I run a reconcile volumes with
fix=yes on both of my TSM-servers.

I get warnings like the following for about 40 Volumes :

05/07/01 05:48:43 ANR4359W RECONCILE VOLUMES: Volume BC0ADSM2.BFS.973060068
not valid, the size of the volume on target server does not match the size
on the source server.

05/07/01 05:48:44 ANR4361W RECONCILE VOLUMES: Volume BC0ADSM2.BFS.975652121
not valid, the target server has reported damage to all or part of the
volume.

The job completes with the following messages :

05/07/01 05:48:46 ANR4345I RECONCILE VOLUMES completed for device class
BC02DEVCL; (process ID 363); 3501 volumes inspected, 38 invalid volumes
found, 0 volumes deleted.
05/07/01 05:48:46 ANR4336W RECONCILE VOLUMES process ended, process ID 363.
05/07/01 05:48:46 ANR0987I Process 363 for RECONCILE VOLUMES (REPAIR)
running in the BACKGROUND processed 3501 items with a completion state of
SUCCESS at 05:48:46.

Many of the volumes (not all) bring the same message on next day.

How do I get rid of these messages, what do they exactly mean and how can I
make the copy-pool-data rebuild ?

Thanks
Christoph

Problems Netware 5

2001-06-20 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hy all,

last days we had (and have) some problems with clients on Novell.
Every night one or two (of about 20) novell-server hang after starting a
scheduled backup-operation.
The logs say 'unable to connect ...' and it looks as if the client
continuesly tries to transfer data (but gets no connection to the server).
On the TSM-server no session to the client is alive after 900 sec
(CommTimeOut-Parameter).
If we then try to unload the TSM-Client with "unload dsmcad.nlm" and "unload
dsmc.nlm" a message pops up, that you should be sure that there is no
activity on the client, otherwise the system may hang. If you now unload the
nlm's the system breaks and reboots.

Has anybody seen this before and knows how to solve this problem

Thanks

Reclamation of COPY-POOL-Volumes

2001-06-22 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hy all,

we have two backup-server, where we write our data to a tape-library. For
all our tape-pools we have defined one copy-pool which links to the other
server where the data are written to a separate tape-pool (pool_extern). We
have defined collocation for all our pools. When I now run reclamation on
the copy_pool I see, that for all copy-pool-volume the server deletes, he
defines a new one where the rest of the data are transfered.
This seems to be logical (because the reclaimed volumes are not empty and
the rest of the data has to be handeled like this because collocation is on)
but what I wanted is to reduce the number of volumes in the copy-pool. How
can I manage this and what is the real right way to reclaim data in a
copy-pool (or do I have to set the 'Maximum Scratch Volumes
Allowed'-Parameter in the Copy-Pool-Definition to unlimited ?).

Thanks for help

Christoph

AW: Reclamation of COPY-POOL-Volumes

2001-06-24 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Thanks,
but I think it is some more complicated :
because it works with server-to-server connection for every client the
server creates a new logical volume (on the source server) each day a 'copy
stg_pool' is started. On the target server all logical volumes (of all
clients) of one 'copy stg_pool' session are stored on one tape until it is
filled up. So I do want collocated data but I do want some reclamation where
the lets say 10% of valid data of more then one volume are stored together
on one new logical volume (e.g. delete 5 volumes create 1 new).
If this is handeled by putting 'reclamation threshold' to 90% for copy_pool
it's ok, but what it looks like on my server is that he creates one new
logical volume for one reclamed old one (so for the target server
reclamation works, but on the source server the number of logical volumes
increases from day to day).

TDP-Oracle 2.2 Unix

Hy all,

we are trying to set up TDP for Oracle 2.2 on a HP-UX box.
We do not manage to assign a separate managment class to the filespace

in the inclexcl-list the files are always assigned to the
default-management-class. In the error-log the following message is written

"Management class 'ORCBACKUP' named on include/exclude line 1 does not

Slow archive

2001-08-09 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hy all,

I'm trying to archive some data from an HP-UX 10.0 box with ADSM 3.1 client
to an AIX 4.3.3 Server with TSM 4.1.4.
I'm using the graphic-interface (no web-interface available).
The amount of date is about 6 Files and 2 GB.
At the beginning the archiving works ok, but after some time it gets slower
and slower up to that point where it needs minutes to get one empty direcory
stored. Because it didn't seem to finish, I stopped it.
Now when I call the retrieve in graphical interface and walk in the
directory-tree of that archive, it takes always a long time to expand it.

Has anybody seen this before and knows how to get it fixed

3590 tape drives

2000-10-27 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hy experts !

A question about tape-drives :

we have in our tape-library (IBM 3494) Magstar 3590 Modell E drives (E1A).
Because they were bought one year ago, they don' t have the facility to
read/write the extended-length-cartridges, so we use the normal cartridges
with 20 GB uncompressed.

Now we plan to upgrade those drives (IBM-upgrade-Kit) so that they can
handle the extended-length-cartridges (40GB uncompressed).

My question now : are the drives with this feature able to handle
(read/write) the old format cartridges (20 GB), or can they only read those
40 GB-cartridges.

Thanks a lot

Archiving

2001-01-15 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hy everyone,

we are discussing the possibilities of archiving data with TSM or other
products (from NT,UNIX).
Our requirements are to archive data for about 30 years. TSM is in
discussion because we use it already for backup ( and in some cases we use
the archive-command ).
The policy domains for the clients for archiving will be (from my point of
view) totally different to those for backup.

Can anybody share his good (or bad) experience in long term archiving with
whatever kind of library in the background (DVD or tape).

Faster Restores

2001-02-12 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hy all,

last week I had to restore a Netware-Client completely (TSM-Vers.: 3.7.2).
Because I am not familiar with Netware (our Netware Administrator was ill),
I decided to restore the data with the Web-Interface. After several breaks
and retrys (the Web-Window stopped doing anything while the Restore had not
finished or the Restore was said to have correctly finished in the
activity-log of the TSM-Server (AIX 4.3 and TSM 3.7.4) while the
Web-Interface was frozen and definitely not all data were back ...) I made a
try with the command-line and it worked fine. Because I splitted the Restore
for the different Volumes, each Restore went through all tapes of the client
(collocated). That took a while, because the data are ordered on a daily
base on the tapes.

Now my question . Is there any option to reorganize the stored data of a
client, that they are restored faster (except collocation on filespace that
has to be switched on for a complete storage-pool ) ?

Thanks for help

Incremental Restore

2001-02-20 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hy all,

within the next few days I have to restore some large disk-volumes to new
disks on a Netware-Server. Because its in production, I can't stop the
server for the whole restore time. The volumes are about 260GB in size. The
backup-data are spanned over about 24 tapes (3590E), so restore takes a
while.
The data can not be mirrored.
My idea is to restore the complete data to the new volumes while users work
on the old ones. After finishing this restore, I want to do another
incremental backup of the old volumes to get the meanwhile changed data.

But : how do I get only these data to the new volumes without touching all
the other older data on the tapes ???

Restore-Netware

2001-02-21 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hy all,

I started a restore from our AIX 4.3, TSM 3.7.4 Server to a Netware %.1
Client (TSM 3.7.2). We restored a complete Volume to a new clean Volume ( '
restore daten:* newdata:/ -subdir=all ' ). I started the restore yesterday
evening to run over night. Today in the morning the netware-server stood
with a message where I should say if an existing file should be overwritten
( the exact message text was answered by my college before I could see it,
so I couldn't check the file/directory ).

Why does TSM ask for overwriting on a complete new and empty volume ?

For any explanations I thank you

And where can I see which keys the restore was unable to update.

Postschedulecmd

I have a question concerning the postschedcmd-option :

on new installed HP-UX 11.0 Clients we allways got an error like this when

"aCC runtime: ERROR: _main() not called. "

Client-Version of TSM was : 3.7.2 on HP-UX 11.0 (64-bit)
Server-Version of TSM : 3.7.4 on AIX 4.3

we installed now Client-Version 4.1.2 on these clients and the error has
gone, but

the postschedulecmd defined as option in the client schedule (on the server,
not in dsm.sys) brings an error when the scheduled-time is reached :

ANS1107E Invalid option/value: '-postschedulecmd="lp -oc -dU464

ANS1512E Scheduled event 'BC0MDB01_DB_OFFL' failed. Return code = 4.

The same option works fine with 3.7.2
Is there a change in syntax or is the option no longer available at that
place ?

device-classes ...).
I can now define a second copy-pool, and start copying one of my stg-pools
to this copy-pool.
But how can I delete the data from the first (old) copy-pool (without
renaming client, deleting filespaces ...)?

Thanks for any help

server-to-server copy-pools

2002-06-04 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hi all,

today we have two servers connected via server-to-server. Both server have
defined their copy-pool on the other server.
I would like to split the copy-pool into two different ones. Reason is to
run stg-pool-backups in more than one session parallel..
Does anybody know, if this is possible and how I can set up two different
copypools on a server, that are accessed via server-to-server connection
from one other server.

Thanks for any help

AW: server-to-server copy-pools

2002-06-04 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Sorry,

I forgot to say, we run TSM 4.1.4 on AIX 4.3.
In that version 'migprocess' is not a valid option for copy-pools.

Best regards

AW: server-to-server copy-pools

2002-06-04 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Thanks,

an additional question before setting up the configuration :
second copy-pool with same device-class means that the data physically go to
the same tape-pool on the other server, because it works with the default
management-class for that server ( where the pool name is defined). Is this
correct ?
So the only additional config to make (beneath defining the second
copy-pool) is increasing the 'mount limit' in device-class 'server' on the
one side where copy-pool is defined to the number of copy-pools I define ?

Thanks
Christoph

AW: AW: server-to-server copy-pools

2002-06-12 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hi ,

in a first aproach, I changed the following settings :
   data-source-server :
copy-pool device-class (server device class) : mount-limit set to
'2'
client-settings for client-node (node-type 0 server) : mount-limit
set to '2'
   data-target-server :
device class for primary pool where data goes in : mount-limit
set to 'drives'  (==> max = 8)

Then I tried to do to stg_pool-backups in parallel ( they should go to the
same copy_pool) and I got the following error :

copy storage pool COPY_POOL has ended. Files Backed Up: 0, Bytes Backed Up:

For me it looks as if both backups want to write to the same tape ( because
collocation on copy_pool is 'off' ? ), and
because both requests come from the same "client"-node the second request is
refused. On target server there are no messages.

Is there something mis-defined or what's wrong ?

Thanks for help

Performance

2002-06-26 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hi all,

a question about increasing the performance of my TSM-Server:

TSM-Server : IBM H80 ( 2-way RS64III-450MHz-processor, 2GB memory ), AIX
4.3.3 , TSM 4.1.4

I see with the monitor-tool that my server has over a longer period a
cpu-utilization of more than 80%. This server only handles TSM, no other
task. But there is a lot of data-transfer from backup-pools to copy-pools
and from disk-pool to tape-pool (150 GB disk-pool, data-transfer to
copy-pool about 800 GB per day).

I have some money left for increasing the performance : Does TSM support and
use a second processor ?

Thanks for help

AW: Deleting old TDP for Oracle backups

2002-07-05 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hi Guillaume,
there is a utility from Tivoli called TDPOSYNC (I think only in Version 2 of
TDP for Oracle).
With this tool you can easily delete old backups. It is in the install
directory and in the Installation and Users Guide you find the description.

Best regards

AW: TSM 4.2, Private won't go into scratch

Hi Zbyszek,

what is the setting for the reclamation threshold for the storage pool ?
Have you run "inventory expiration" ?
And take a look at the Pct.ReclaimabelSpace on the tapes.

Hi Zbyszek,

Just try this one

"select volume_name,pct_reclaim,stgpool_name from volumes order by
stgpool_name,pct_reclaim desc"

or you can go on Web-Admin : "Server-Storage / Storage Pools / Query
storage pool volumes by entering the volume-name and Display-Format =
"Detailed"

AW: Tape questions

2002-07-23 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hy Rob,
I don't know how you deleted the tape from database. If with "discard data =
yes" the data includung the copies are deleted from database. Than you don't
have the data on copy-storage-pool.
If a volume is damaged and a move data doesn't get all data from that tape
make a 'restore volume xxx' (there is a preview-option) to rebuild the data
from the copy-storagepool to the primary-storage-pool.
After this procedure all data should be available from primary-storage-pool
(the damaged volume is set to 'unavailable' and can be taken out of the
library).

Best wishes

WIN2K-Complete-Restore

2002-08-13 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hi all,

I remember a document (Red-Book) where was written how to restore the
Operating-System and all data to a WIN-NT-Server (By starting with an extra
partition with TSM-Client and restoring the other partition ...).
I can not find this document anymore on any Web-page from IBM. Does anybody
have a link ?

But my real problem is to recover a W2K-Server. My collegues are testing
recovery on W2K-Servers and up to now thei didn't manage to get one running
as before (problems that are reported by them are e.g. with the
InternetExplorer 6). Does anybody have a tested plan on how to recover a
W2K-Server with TSM (not realy bar-metal but e.g. with an extra partition
...) or is there anywhere a document on how to do it ?

Thanks for help
Christoph.

W2K Missing Files

2002-09-25 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hi all,

I have a strange Problem with our W2K-Servers : TSM-Client 4.2.0.0
When starting an interactive Backup-Session I select some Files out of the
explorer-like window for backup (e.g. KERNEL32.DLL from winnt\system32 ).
I start the backup session and it completes without error, but all object
counter say "0" . The file was not backed up. But then when I go back to the
backup-window this selected files and a lot more are not displayed anymore
in the file-selection in the directory \winnt\system32.
And I don't find any restorable version of these files, so thei never were
backed up.

Does anybody have seen this behaviour on his system ? Any explanation ?

Thanks

Disk-Pool-Volume delete not possible

2002-09-30 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hi all,

on one of my TSM-Servers ( TSM-Vers : 4.1.4 / AIX 4.3.3 ) I have a problem
with one volume of my disk-pool :

I wanted to reorganize my pool-volumes, so I deleted all existing
disk-volumes of that storage-pool. All but one volumes could be deleted.
For this volume the Message came :ANR2406E DELETE VOLUME: Volume
/TSM1/stgc/stg6.dsm still contains data.
I made a "q content" but no data were shown. I tried do delete with
"discarddata=yes" the reply was the same :ANR2406E DELETE VOLUME: Volume
/TSM1/stgc/stg6.dsm still contains data.
Then I changed the status to offline.
I changed my volume-groups on AIX (by this all files from that disk-stgpool
were deleted).
Now I did build all new volumes.
But how can I get rid of this one offline disk-volume ( I generated a new
one with same size but other name and renamed it to the old name : setting
it online caused an error message : ANR1315E Vary-on failed for disk volume
/TSM1/stgc/stg6.- dsm - invalid label block.

Thanks for any help

compressed data and the file-information shows the original size there can
be a lot of data on a tape if the reclaimable space is 90 %. I saw this
often with my Novell-Pool. Then the reclamation runs for these 10 % a long
time ( in these cases I look at the PCT UTILIZED too (the sum of PCT
UTILIZED and PCT RECLAIMABLE in these cases is always a lot more than 100 %
(e.g.130%)).

Best wishes

Filenames with generic characters

2002-01-28 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hi all,

sometimes it happens, that while backing up a client to my server ( Vers
4.1.4 / AIX 4.3.3 ) the error message "ANS1228E Sending of object
'/u02/home/iv/test/*' failed" is written in the client-error-log.
The problem seems to be that he wants to update the information for this
file on the servers tsm-database but can't handle the generic filename '*'.
A filename like this normaly makes no sense (but it happens). The server is
able to back it up. But the server cant delete or update a file with this
name in his database.

My question : Is there a way to delete these files from the tsm-database. Up
to now i renamed the filespace and after a while I deleted this filespace.
But this is not very handy for restoring.

Thanks for any help

Chris

Local DAT-Drive for UNLOADDB

2002-01-29 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hi all,

on my testserver (AIX 4.3.3 / TSM 4.14 ) I tried to get the local DAT-drive
as output-device for a test of unloaddb/loaddb going.
Defined a 'manuel library' called 'LOC_DEV'
Defined a 'manuel drive' called 'DAT1' pointing to '/dev/rmt0' with Library
Name 'LOC_DEV'
Defined a '4mm device class' called 'DAT' with 'recording format ' DDS3C',
'library name' = 'LOC_DEV'

Labelling a volume with 'label libvol LOC_DEV vol001' seems to work :

ANR2017I Administrator ADMIN issued command: LABEL LIBVOLUME LOC_DEV vol001
OVERWRITE=YES
ANR0984I Process 3 for LABEL LIBVOLUME started in the BACKGROUND at
14:24:40.
ANR8799I LABEL LIBVOLUME: Operation for library LOC_DEV started as process
3.
ANR8326I 002: Mount GENERICTAPE volume VOL001 R/W in drive DAT1 (/dev/rmt0)
of library LOC_DEV within 60 minutes.
ANR0609I LABEL LIBVOLUME started as process 3.
ANR8372I 002: Remove GENERICTAPE volume VOL001 from drive DAT1 (/dev/rmt0)
of library LOC_DEV.
ANR8800I LABEL LIBVOLUME for volume VOL001 in library LOC_DEV completed
successfully. ANR0985I Process 3 for LABEL LIBVOLUME running in the
BACKGROUND completed with completion state SUCCESS at 14:27:38.

Then I tried to make a dbbackup to the device class 'DAT', type 'FULL' on
volume 'vol001' an d got the following error :

ANR2280I Full database backup started as process 4.
ANR4571E Database backup/restore terminated - insufficient number of mount
points available for removable media.
ANR0985I Process 4 for DATABASE BACKUP running in the FOREGROUND completed
with completion state FAILURE at 14:28:57.

My question : where do I have to set the number of mountpoints other then in
the the '4mm device class' or do I have enywhere else a wrong definition ?

Thanks for help

Chris

dsmcad

2002-02-06 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hi all,

on Unix-Systems a running dsmcad-process is necessary to work with the
web-client.
On one of my systems (Solaris 5.7; TSM 3.7.2) I work with two
TSM-client-nodenames.
In the dsm.sys file i have two sections with different servername-entries
and different nodename-entries.
How can I manage to see via web-client both of my clientnodes ?
I tried starting dsmcad with httpport-option (dsmcad httpport=1582), but it
didn't work.
I tried having two HTTPport entries, one in each section of the dsm.sys
file, but it didn't work.

Any help ?

Chris

UNLOADDB-LOADDB

2002-03-20 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hi all,

I am trying to test an unload/load of my production-database to get
information on how long it takes and how big the reorganization-effort is.
I stopped the production database, copied the db-files, copied the log-file,
and transfered it to my testserver.
On testserver (physically on the same unix-server) I edited the dsmserv.dsk
to match the names of the files.
Then I tried an 'dsmserv unloaddb devclass=file'. It came back with errors
regarding the filenames of the production-server.
Is the scenario I tried not possible and how can I do an test on
unload/loadddb without stopping the productive-server for a day ?

Thanks for any help

Chris

AW: UNLOADDB/LOADDB Scenario

2002-03-20 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hi Andy,

my idea is similar to yours :

halt the server
copy my databases and logs (for fallback)
unloaddb to devclass=file
loadformat
loaddb

I don't think you have to make an auditdb if your unloaddb works with the
consistant-option (default) (Administrators Reference 'dsmserv unloaddb').
Where does the loaddb-process get the information about the database-volumes
to load from ? Does it use the dsmserv.dsk ? (Because the unloaddb-process
seems to get the information about names and directories of the db- and
log-files directly out of one of the db-files).

But I wanted to test it before running the processes on production to get an
idea about the runtime of the processes. Our database is about 24 GB and
with an unload-performance of about 2 GB (I tested with a smaller database)
it would take about 12 H and then I haven't yet reloaded the database.

And I heard about some problems with loaddb with some TSM-Versions, so I
have to have a quick fallback-strategy.

Best regards
Chris

unloaddb

2002-03-21 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hi all,

I'm just testing unloaddb (TSM 4.14 / AIX 4.3.3) :
about 2 hours the unloaddb is now running. It always writes out the
following message with increasing the number of entries :
ANR4013I UNLOADDB: Dumped 125629758 database entries (cumulative)

But now it doesn't write this message anymore, but the dump-file is growing.

Is this a bug and how do I get information about the number of database
entries when unloaddb has finished ?

Thanks
Chris

AW: Utilizing All My drives

2002-03-22 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hi Bassam,

you can define as many processes as you like, but the limitation is the
number of free drives. If you define more procs then you have drives, the
migration processes wait until there is a drive available (this also happens
if some of your drives are used by other processes).
For using more than 2 drives you have to set the parameter "mount limit" in
your device-definition to a apropriate value (normally you set this value to
'drives').
You normally set the value maxprocs to a value less then the number of
drives, so that other operations can work on tapes too.

Best regards
Chris

AW: Utilizing All My drives

2002-03-22 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hi,
as Demetrius said, its the migpr-Parameter that you can set with your
migration. The mountlimit is a parameter in the devclasses-table. You can
after setting mountlimit to "drives" just initiate migration by saying "upd
stg hi=0 lo=0 migpr=4" and if there are date from more
than 4 clients that should store their data on different tapes
(collocation=yes) in that pool, 4 processes should start.

compression

2002-03-28 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hi all,

I have a client (SUN OS 5.7) with TSM Vers. 3.7.2
I run some dsmc selective commands in a script on the client and allways the
last one tells me in the summary ANE4968I (Session: 15905, Node: BC0CDBSM)
Objects compressed by: 100%
while all other commands write ANE4968I (Session: 15905, Node: BC0CDBSM)
Objects compressed by: 0%
On the client is no compression , on the server is no comression in any
option-setting and the transfered volume seems to be non-compressed..

Another client (SUN OS 5.8) with TSM Vers. 4.2.1.21 where I start only one
dsmc incr within a script ends with the same message ANE4968I (Session:
13538, Node: BC0LFSM) Objects compressed by: 100%.
On this client is no compression , on the server is no comression in any
option-setting and the transfered volume seems to be non-compressed.

Where does the difference come from, and how can you compress a file by 100%
?

Kind regards
Chris

Novell-Client

2002-04-10 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hi all,

since 2 days we have Problems on one of our Novell-Server with Backup. When
Backup is scheduled from Server, the client (Netware 5.2 SP2, TSM 4.2.1.27)
breaks and reboots. No backup is done. The last messages in dsmsched.log is
the list of the filesystems the backup has to handle.
Although we have some more Novell-Server with same Versions we have the
Problems only on this one. The difference is, that on this server the
following modules are loaded :
ACPSAAS1.NLM Vers 4.02a from 21-Dec-2001
ACPSAAS2.NLM Vers 4.02a from 21-Dec-2001
while on all other Novell-Clients these Modules are loaded in Vers 4.01b
from 30-May-2001.
It seems to be that the Server with problems is the only one really rebooted
since installation of the TSM-Client-Version 4.2.1.27.

Does anyone have similar Problems and/or knows about a solution ?

Thanks
Chris

AW: How to rename a primary pool used by TDP for Oracle?

Hi,
is it possible that you have in your include list ( defined in dsm.sys ) the

Normally a storage-pool is associated to an active management class. So if
you use the same management-class as before I think you don't have to change
anything on the server.

Process priority

2001-11-28 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hi all,

is there any place where I can set the priority for a system process like
"backup stg" or "migration".(or is there any place where the priority of the
processes is written down).
My problem is, that if on my server several processes are running using all
tape-stations, one more started e.g. "restore" kills one of the other
processes. I want decide by setting the priority which of the processes can
be cancelled and which should not.

Thanks for any help

Performance on w2k

2001-12-13 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hi all,

I have a a question concerning performance on a W2K-Client.

On our W2K-fileserver (2 processors, 80 files, w2k-compression on) we
get a very poor performance with our backup (Vers. 4.2.0.0). With the
performance monitor there seems not to be an problem with memory or CPU
The bad time results from the scanning of the filesystem. In dsmsched.log
you can see, that the system scans about 1000 to 1500 files per minute, what
is compared to other systems very poor.
I am not an expert in w2k so my question : is this normal for a w2k-system
with that many files. Because there are sometimes a lot of rights belonging
to one file, maybe there is a lot to compare with the filelist from the
TSM-server ??
I saw in the XP-Client-Version an Problem fixed with IC31706, that reports
of a performance problem in XP (what is the same TSM-Client), but this fix
is not available for w2k.

Has anybody an idea where the problem comes from and how it can be fixed ?

Thanks a lot

Chris

TDPO 2.2

2001-12-18 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hi all,

my question is about TDP for Oracle running on HP-UX 11.0
On our database-server is a logfile written in the .../udump-directory which
contains messages with number SBT-13167. I cannot see who is writing these
messages but there are a lot of these messages.
I would like to stop the writing in the logfile, but I don't know how.

Thanks for any help

Migration

2001-12-21 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hi all,

today I have a question dealing with migration :

I have one disk-storage-pool that is filled up during the night by several
clients. When it reaches the High-Mig-Pct, the Migration starts with up to
three jobs going to tape.
Backups havent finished at that time and suddenly the backup-jobs wants a
tape to be mounted, and this is just that tape, that is mounted by the
migration-job (because of collocation on client). So the backup-job has to
wait and wait.
But the question is, why the backup of the client, that has as primary-pool
only a disk-pool whis no "maximum size threshhold" transfers data direct to
tape (while disk pool is migrating) and whow to stop this behaviour.

Thanks for help

remove a tape from library

2002-01-22 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hi all,

today I have a problem with one of my tapes in the tape-library (3494).

A tape didn't come out of the drive, the technican came in, and he managed
to bring out the tape. But unfortunately the tape broke, so it is now (after
restoring the data from copy-pool) set 'destroyed'. I deleted the volume
with discarddata=yes. The tape is physically not in the library.
Is there a command to remove a volume (that is only in the database, not
physically in the library) from TSM and the library-database ?

Thanks a lot

Christoph

Hi all,

Does anybody know, if there is a TSM-client for Linux and/or HP-UX on a

I saw an IA64-api for Linux on the download-side.

Journal-Based-bACKUP

2003-08-04 Thread Christoph Pilgram
Hi all,

I do have problems, backing up one of our W2K-Nodes within the given
timeframe of 10 Hours.
It is a very big node ( 350 GB Filespace, 6 000 000 files, all files under
one mountpoint) and we always make full incremental. I plan to use
journal-based-backup to get it done in time.
Does anybody has experience with this kind of backup or any other good idea
and can share the pro's and con's with me. And what does it mean in the
User Guide ( we do not make selective backups) :

The file space image at the server cannot have been modified by an
administrative command since the last full incremental.

The storage management policy for the files being backed up cannot have been
updated since the last full incremental.

Thanks for any help

memory runs too long in the night, we tried to do it with 'resourceutil 4'.
We got an 'out of memory' abend. We gave 8 GB of RAM to the Client, nothing

Can anybody give some help (on how to make use of the 8 GB RAM to speed up

After 5 sec. there is a new reboot.

Hi,

Try the following things:
- Reconcile volumes fix=yes;
- audit vol fix=yes

This should resolve the errors.

Only use delete volume (discard=yes) if no other action is available
(the volume is completely lost).

state is "mountablenotinlib".

The volume is in the library, I see in with q libvol in Status=Private, it
belongs to a tape-storage-pool, but it can not be deleted. A "select from

I've run into this before and it's frustrating.

Try this:

move media 03 stgpool=pool_extern wherestatus=empty remove=no
checklabel=no

Then, whether the first command is successful or not:

move media 03 stgpool=pool_extern wherestatus=empty
wherestate=mountablenotinlib

Although it seems that the volume state should toggle each time, the
wherestatus=empty seems to be required for empty volumes.

Whenever you run across a message that is unfamiliar to you, the first
course of action should be to look it up, either in the Messages manual or
using the "HELP " command from the Admin command line
interface. In this case, I think you will find the message help useful.

VolHistory-Question

2005-03-23 Thread Christoph Pilgram
Hi all,

In my VolumeHistory I have an entry for a "dbsnapshot" to a
tape-device-class (for analysing an error by IBM) :
Date/Time: 11/25/04 18:12:19
Volume Type: DBSNAPSHOT
Backup Series: 1
Backup Operation: 0
Volume Seq: 1
Device Class: 3590DEVCL
Volume Name: 000805
Volume Location:
Command:

I took the tape out of the library some times ago. How can I delete the
entry in the Volume-History.
I tried 'delete volhist todate=today -4 type=dbsnapshot'. ==> ANR2467I
DELETE VOLHISTORY: 0 sequential volume history entries were successfully
deleted.
 'delete volhist todate=today -4 type=dbsnapshot devcl=3590devcl'
==> ANR6978E DELETE VOLHISTORY: Invalid device class 3590DEVCL
If I try to delete the volume from GUI, I can not choose devclass=3590DEVCL.

Novell restore : ANS1905E

2002-10-24 Thread Christoph Pilgram
Hi all,

TSM-Server : V.4.1.4 on AIX 4.3.3
TSM-Client : V 4.2.1.27 on Netware 5.00.09 Supp-Pack 02

During restoring of data on a novell server we got the following error for
about 4000 different objects ( of 1.100.000 restored objects) :

10/22/2002 16:40:27 ANS1905E NetWare SMS error processing
'DATEN:/PROJEKTE/H92 ZWG RMT/Protokolle/Bauprotkolle/Besp.26.08.doc':
(TSA500.NLM 5.4 315) The program's attempt to scan failed, probably because
an invalid path was specified.

The restore was a command line restore of a complete volume.

In a second try we could restore those files with the web-client.

But what caused these errors ?

Thanks for any help

TSM-Server V 4

2002-11-11 Thread Christoph Pilgram
Hi all

due to the changes in the download-procedures from the TSM-WEB-Server I have
problems with login on that side. Because my call at IBM has not yet solved
the problems I ask here :
What is the newest maintenance-level on TSM Server Version 4 for AIX ?
I see a level of 4.2.2.13 but I have heard there is 4.2.3 or 4.3 available.

Upgrade Server 4.1.4 -> 4.2.3

2002-11-12 Thread Christoph Pilgram
Hi all

I have to upgrade my TSM-Servers (AIX 4.3.3) from V 4.1.4 to 4.2.3. In the
readme for 4.2.3 is written under "TSM
Server Upgrade issues for version 4.2.0.0" that if you upgrade from 4.1.x.x
you have to uninstall the current version.
For me its not clear if this chapter belongs to all operating systems.

So do I have to uninstall all modules of V 4.1.4 from my AIX server before
installing ?
Do I have to start the TSM-Server-Software before installing V4.2.3 on top
of 4.2.1, or can I just install 4.2.1 and 4.2.3 immediately afterwards (with
no start of dsmserv) ? When will the database be upgraded ?

If anybody has experience on this, let me know

Thanks

Chris

selective with wildcards

2003-01-24 Thread Christoph Pilgram
Hi all,

I have a problem on our W2K-Servers :

to have a faster restore on user profiles we used to backup the
profiles-directory of the users more often then the rest of the machines.
That was when we had novell-servers. The selective statement was easy.
Now with w2k we have the problem that the profile-directory is under the
users-directory.
e.g. : "\\bibfs01\d$\data1\user\\Profile4.0-Desktop"
in the user-directory there are a lot of directories named like the users
are called. In the -directory are beneath the profile, all the
users data (and that are a lot) stored. Those data we do not want to backup.

How can I only backup the /Profile without backing up all the
data under the directory.
e.g : selective "\\bibfs01\d$\data1\user\...\Profile*" ??? (that one does
not work)

Thanks for help

Versions-Compatibility

2003-01-29 Thread Christoph Pilgram
Hi all,

as I have to migrate to Server Version 5.x.x (from 4.2.3 on AIX 4.3.3) I
have to check wether our used client-version can remain the same as before
or have to be migrated to version 5.x-clients.
Is there anywhere a list of which client-version does work with which
server-version (we are somekind of old-fashioned in version-handling).
We use Clients with NT4 / W2K / Netware5 / HP-UX / Solaris / TDP-Oracle /
TDP-Exchange ( V1.1 auf Exchange 5.5) / VMS (ABC-Client V.3.1)

Thanks a lot

dsmc selective

2003-02-06 Thread Christoph Pilgram
Hi all,

a second try :

what is the syntax for selectively backing up the following (using
wildcards) from a W2K-Client :

d:\usr\data1\user1\profile1\...
d:\usr\data1\user1\profile2\...
d:\usr\data1\user2\profile1\...
d:\usr\data1\user2\profile3\...
d:\usr\data1\user3\profile1\...
d:\usr\data1\user3\profile2\...
d:\usr\data1\user3\profile3\...
d:\usr\data1\user4\profile1\...
d:\usr\data1\user4\profile5\...
d:\usr\data1\user5\profile7\...
... and about 200 more user-directories.
I would like something like " dsmc selective d:\usr\data1\...\profile* "

under the user-directory there are a lot of different directories, but I
only want to selectively backup the profile-directories. Under data1 all
directories are user directories.

Thanks for any help

summary-table

2003-02-07 Thread Christoph Pilgram
Hi all,

since installing the 4.2.3.2 level (after 4.1.4) on my AIX-server (AIX
4.3.3) I have the problem that in the summary-table the field "BYTES" for a
backup-session of NT and W2K-clients is filled with "0" even though the
client has transfered GigaBytes of data. Restore-sessions of the same client
show a correct number of bytes in that field. Unix-Clients show (what I have
seen) correct entries in that field.

Thanks for help

TDP for Exchange Configuration problems

2005-10-13 Thread Christoph Pilgram
Hi all,

We use TDP for Exchange in Version 5.1.5.0 (Exchange V 5.5 on w2k)
We have an TSM-Server running V. 5.2.4.3

Policy for Exchange is : Version Data Exists : 2
Version Data Deleted : 0
Retain Extra Versions : 20
Retain Only Version : 20

We run every day an incremental backup of IS and DIR and once a week a full
backup of IS and DIR.

We want to have a minimum of 2 Full Backups and all Incrementel Backups
between.

What I see is, that with this policy we get 2 generations of full backups,
but only the incremental backups from the last full until now.

What do I have to change

Please help

Thanks

Axel - The TSM API is the "media manager layer" for this Oracle DB
interface,
and the errno can be expected to be a TSM API error number, as
documented in its manual. 2230 tells of the alleged dsm.sys file not
being
present, or the inclexcl file pointed to by it. I would check
environment
variables. If you also have the standard B/A client in place, do
'dsmc q opt'
and 'dsmc q inclexcl' to assure that it can access those files as a
basis:
the TDP may use those, or its own files, as per environment variables.

Servers scheduler dies

2005-11-16 Thread Christoph Pilgram
Hi all,

I'm running TSM 5.2.4.3 on an AIX 5.1 server.
In the last 2 weeks it happened twice, that the servers scheduler seems stop
working. In the night after having correctly completed some client backups
(scheduled from the servers scheduler) all following client backup schedules
went to "missed". I could not find any error-message in the actlog.
Only a restart of the TSM-server could get the scheduler to run client
schedules again.

Does anybody have similar problems or knows how to fix it (or where the
problem is)

Thanks
Chris

Restore very slow

2005-12-07 Thread Christoph Pilgram
Hi,

Since this morning (5 hours) I am running a PIT-restore for a user-profile
on a w2k-client (TSM V 5.2.2.0). TSM-Server is a IBM p450 with AIX 5.2 ML6
and TSM-server-version 5.2.4.3. There are about 11 Mio files stored on the
backup-server from this node.

Since begin of rhe restore no access on any tape has been performed, no
directory is created on client. The server works hard on the database
(nmon). Nothing changes in bytes-sent (3.0 M) / bytes recvd (1.5 K) for the
session.

The client started backups about 4 weeks ago so there are not too many
incrementals since then. The data are spread over 2 tapes (IBM-3592).

I now stopped the restore and started a new one to restore only one empty
directory. The behaviour is the same, haevy working on db-volumes but
nothing comes back.

Has anybody seen something like that and knows how to get the data back ?

Thanks for help
Chris

again : Slow restore

2005-12-14 Thread Christoph Pilgram
Hi all,

We use TSM-Server V 5.2.4.3 on AIX 5.2 ML6. Problem with w2k-clients TSM
5.3.0.5 / 5.3.0.14.

A restore of even a small directory with 1 file and 4 empty subdirectories
takes about 2h 10 min if I use the Web-Cli and select the complete
Directory. If I select the complete directory and exclude then 1 empty
subdirectory it finished in 1.5 min. If I try to restore the remaining empty
directory it again workes a very long time (I cancelled the job after 40
min). If I select the directory, the 1 file inside and the remaining
directory restore completes after some minutes.

What has that to do with "no query restore" and what does the server sort
(for hours) in memory (if I understand correctly) if I only select 1 empty
directory ???

Can anybody give me an answer

Thanks

Christoph

Hi,

I had the same problem after reorganize my DB. Seems to be IC47516 fixed
with 5.2.7 . So I had do do an auditdb (with TSM-Support). Look at your
loaddb log : are there any "bad database records" reported ?

Best wishes

AW: (Too) long no query restore?

2006-02-24 Thread Christoph Pilgram
Hi
I had the same problem, and as Wanda wrote I tried it with the TESTFLAG
DISABLEQR and it finished in about 5 minutes. Another test was : do the
complete restore with the exception of one file in one of the subdirectories
: did run in 5 minutes.

Best wishes
Christoph

If you have the luxury of re-creating the problem, try again and put
TESTFLAG DISABLENQR in the dsm.opt file (search on DISABLENQR in the
archives to see what people have said about this before).

That turns off NQR and uses CLASSIC restore. It is known that sometimes
CLASSIC will outperform NQR.

If you get no difference in performance between the two, then you have
something in your hardware config that needs tuning.

Some additional information:

Server: IBM eserver xSeries 346, Intel Xeon CPU, 3.2GHz
Database: 20GB on 4 Volumes (EMC AX100)
Storagepool: 1317GB on 13 Volumes (EMC AX100)

No tape activity is involved as all data (40MB) is restored from disk.

So TSM seems to spend most of the time scanning through the database.
And I think more than 4.5 hours to scan 9.5 million files is way to
long.

W2k-Client crash

2006-03-06 Thread Christoph Pilgram
Hi all,

Since some days (since using tsm-client 5.3.2.2) we have problems on one of
our w2k-clients. Sometimes the client crashes during backup of 'System and
Boot Files', just close to the end of backup. The w2k-system stands without
having the possibility to enter the console and has to be rebooted.
Server runs on AIX 5.2 with TSM 5.2.4.3

Has anybody seen this or knows how to solve the problem.

Thanks
Chris
