Drive Encryption (3592)

2008-04-15 Thread Herrmann, Boris
Hello,
again, I've a question regarding drive encryption. Our environment:

TSM Server 5.4.1.2 (AIX 5.3)
TS3500 tape library with 3592 Drives

In the next time, our old 3592 Drives will be replaced with newer one
(3592) which have the hardware drive encryption capability.
Our plan is to use the encryption only for our COPYSTORAGE POOLS , TSM
DB BACKUPS and EXPORTS (using "library encryption" method).

We want to create two DEVCLASSES: DEV3592 and DEV3592_ENC

If I understand the option DRIVEEncryption correctly it is not possible
to use both (TAPEPOOL without encryption) and (COPYPOOL with encryption)
because either one will fail with "library method"?. If we use ALLOW for
DEV3592_ENC => encryption will work (for our COPYPOOLS). But when we use
OFF for our DEV3592 (TAPEPOOL) => backup will fail with method Library
Encryption? So how is it possible to use both?

Any help or tips are appreciated.

With kind regards,
Boris

Re: Drive Encryption (3592)

2008-04-15 Thread Strand, Neil B.
Boris,
Library managed encryption is controlled by the TS3500 library
communicating with the Encryption Key Manager application and TSM has no
awareness of any encryption occurring. No TSM configuration is required
when performing library managed encryption.
I strongly recommend that you review the the following:
IBM Encryption Key Manager Intro, Planning and User Guide (GA76-0419)
IBM Tape device Drivers Encryption Support (GA32-0565)
IBM TSM Building a Secure Environment (Redbook SG24-7505)
IBM System Storage TS1120 Tape Encryption: Planning, Implementation and
Usage Guide (Redbook SG24-7320)
IBM Tape Encryption for TS1120 and IBM Ultrium 4 Tape Drives (TechDoc,
Rolf Hahn)

Plan to spend a few weeks setting up your key management, testing and
documenting key management policies and procedures. Also verify the
recovery procedure if you accidently loose or destroy a key (hint -
monster.com)

An advantage to library managed encryption is that your security
group can be respoonsible for managing the encryption keys with almost
no TSM expertise required. Additionally, a different application (not
TSM) could write encrypted data to a tape with no dependence on TSM
(other than temporarly marking that drive unavailable and ensuring the
tape is not a TSM tape).

Have you considered encrypting every tape in the library? It may
simplify your media management. The performance hit of encrypting on a
TS1120 is almost nill.

Access Denied for PLUGINS directory during upgrade

2008-04-15 Thread Bill Boyer
Windows2003 server installed with TSM client 5.4.1.6. Trying to upgrade to
5.4.2.0.

- Stopped TSM service(s)

- Ran the SETUP.EXE and took typical install

- During the install received a message about the PLUGINS directory
being inaccessible. Setup stopped and now I have no TSm client installed.

Trying to access that directory through Explorer or even trying to CD to it
gives the access denied message. I'm signed on as an admin. I just ran this
same upgrade on 3 other Win2003 domain controllers with no problems. I even
tried to rename the TSM directory to something else and re-run the install
as a fresh install, but I can't even do that.

I remember seeing this error in the past, but it's been too long and too
many other errors that I can't remember what we did to resolve the issue.

Any ideas?

Hi Bill,

Sometimes I had the same problem, but after a reboot the folder is away.
I think some uninstall information is kept in this folder.
After a reboot of the w2k3 server you can continue the installation of the new
client version.

But why don´t you install the new version 5.5.0.3 ? Is there any reason ?
We actually do not have any problems with new versions of BAClient.

Question about BUTA / multiple filespaces

2008-04-15 Thread Bjørn Nachtwey
dear all,

we're running AFS and do the backup with BUTA :-)

actually the BUTA-"node" is collocated, so the backup and migration is
done by just one process, which causes large duration.

how can I speed up?

my guess is to define an extra BUTA disc / tape pool where only the BUTA
node is backuped within.
so my question:
if I switch off collocation, are the multiple filespaces (actually about
2800) backuped to different tapes parallely?

thanks,

Bjørn

JR- TSM Server 5.5 client issues

2008-04-15 Thread JR Trimark

clients backing up to the 5.5 server; these successfully backed up tot he
TSM 5.3 server.

Re: Image Backup/Incr Backup Problem

2008-04-15 Thread Huebschman, George J.
It is basic, but after you commented out the include.image statement,
did you restart the scheduler?
Is the Client still associated to an image backup schedule?
To answer whether the tapeonly management class is still being used, you
can look up what management class your data is using either at the
client or the server.
Query backup at the client
Or, at the server run a select against the backups table...that
is a heavy query to run though. If you have a large db it can take a
long time to run. Limiting the query by object type and filespace_id
will make it more efficient. That will also show you if it is still
trying to do image backups.

Subject: [ADSM-L] Image Backup/Incr Backup Problem

Hi

TSM SERVER v5.4.0 running on Windows 2003

TSM Client v5.4.0.2

I run a daily incremental backup of a filesystem and writes to a 1tb
disk pool.

The Filesystem is 2tb, the occupied space is 1..45tb. The Incremental BU
inspects c9m files and backs up approc 7gb.

This has ran successfully for some time now, but takes a long time to
run (the delay is at the inspection side).

So, i tried LVSA Snapshot Image backup as a test.

I created and activated a new management class called TAPEONLY. I then
updated the DSM.OPT file to say 'include.image e:\ tapeonly' to write
directly to tape (LTO3). Runs fine. I can see the tape mounts etc and
took 7 hrs to backup.

Now, having completed my test, when i have gone back to my normal incr
backups, i get message 'ANS1114I waiting for mount of offline media' - a
'query session' shows a tape mount. But i am not using the include/image
statement any longer (it is commented out of the DSM.OPT file) and it
should be going to disk pool, as it always has done.

I have read that if the server thinks the image to be backed up is
larger than the target storage pool, it will go to that storage pools'
next stgpool. In this case, i am wondering if the TSM server now expects
1.45tb (the LVSA Image size) but the disk_pool is only 1tb. Next stgpool
is the tape_pool, hence the ANS1114I message.

Any thoughts?

Jeff
