Re: TSM restore question
Thanks, that what it looked like but I wanted to make sure. It's hard to get the UNIX group to use the GUI but in this case it might just have to be done. Well, that depends upon your MOUNTRetention value. Depending upon general environmental factors, you may be able to boost this to cover latency if restorals are frequent enough to warrant the action. And, depending upon volume of data, you may be able to keep a reasonable amount on disk, rather than tape, via a File devclass or Disk type with caching. Given that all that data was on one tape, it seems like having a good amount of disk in your storage pool hierarchy could cover a lot of restorals. Richard Sims
Preschedulecmd not executed

Backup hangs the Windows 2000 server client
Dear All, I m using TSM server 5.2.2 on Windows 2003 using Library LTO 3582. I take incremental backups daily for all the servers including another windows 2000 server. One of my servers which is IBM 346 running latest secutiy and OS patches hangs and hangs forever untill power button is pressed. the system always hangs and the process of backup restarts and hangs again and again. there is no specific point or file where it hangs. also the TSM server logs show that the session was idle and was terminated. Mount retention expires and tape is safely put back into its slot. I am using open file backup support with include.fs. I m stuck ! Please help. AW: Preschedulecmd not executed
Hi, PreschedCMD starts a program, not a plain file. The last line in OPT file should be: Preschedulecmd "C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\cmd.exe /C D:\Hyperion\Export\Scripts\EssExport_Schedule.bat" Note, the TSM must be told which program is to be started, in my environment the line would be: Preschedulecmd "C:\prog\JPSoft\4nt.exe /C D:\Hyperion\Export\Scripts\EssExport_Schedule.bat" and TSM cannot predict know what interpreter shall be used unless you tell him. Well, I´d still await an error messag in log files anyway.. regards Juraj > -Ursprüngliche Nachricht- > Von: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Im > Auftrag von Paul Van De Vijver > Gesendet: Montag, 07. JBB on AIX?
The glossies claim that AIX can do journal based backup as of 5.3.2, http://www-306.ibm.com/software/tivoli/products/storage-mgr/enhancements-v5.3.html and Freddy said as much in Oxford. But I don't see it mentioned in the notes, and the manual is mute. I've got an informational PMR submitted, but I figured someone here would be even more desparate for it than I, and might have already learned something. Once I'm sure the thing works, I intend to unleash it on my 250G 17M-file filespace. - Allen S. Rout

ITSM on SVC
Just wanted to share boost in performance we've had at our site. We run ITSM on an [old] pSeries 6M1 machine running AIX 5.2.0.6 and ITSM 5.2.6.2. We recently installed the IBM SVC product on our SAN. On the backend we have IBM DS4100's, IBM DS4300's and an IBM DS8000. The DS8000 has only partially provisioned through the SVC. I moved my DBV's, LOGV's, and disk storage pools to storage presented by the SVC. Since the move . . . - full 42GB DB expiration [expire inventory]: down from 6-8 hours [at 99.12% cache hit] to 83-minutes [99.27% cache hit] - drives that went to 100% utilization [via topas display] during backups are down to 17% [max] utilization (DS4100 - SATA) - ITSM start/restart: down from 4.5 minutes to 35 seconds. In our initial setup, we had the DB and DBC volumes both on DS4300's; we saw the same performance in this configuration. Subsequently, we moved the DB from the DS4300 to the DS8100 via the SVC and we saw zero impact on the running ITSM; infact we had expirations running during the time the data was being moved. Additionally, during the same storage "reorg" we went from a stand alone system to an HACMP cluster. With the various ITSM storage components now available through the SVC, we are able to fallover within 90 seconds from the primary node to the secondary node. Hope this helps anyone in their storage decisions; at least for ITSM. :-) Mahesh
How many simultaneous tape paths can a TSM server drive
Greetings, This will seem like an odd question, but can anybody tell me how to calculate the relative impact of tape drives on the performance of the TSM server? With real tape drives, a TSM server (in my case, AIX) doesn't have to worry about large numbers of real drives, because it would be cost prohibitive to have 50 or 60 real tape drives on a single TSM server. But now that there are virtual tape products, like the Clariion Disk Library, that allow you to drive a large number, can the resources on the TSM server prevent you from having large numbers of virtual tape drives? I have on customer with 64 virtual LTO2 drives on a single AIX TSM server (a 8-way 6M2 with 16GB memory), and it seems to be able to use them all simultaneously without running into any limitations, except for the speed of the incoming data, which is limited to the size of the incoming two Gig-E networks sending the data. But I have another customer who believes they need 200 virtual drives, and that all of them will be working at once. They have that many simultaneous client sessions going to disk pool, but they would like to drive straight to CDL virtual tapes, and eliminate the disk pool. Does anyone see a problem with that? Best Regards, John D. Schneider Technology Consultant

They have that many simultaneous > client sessions going to disk pool, but they would like to drive straight to > CDL virtual tapes, and eliminate the disk pool. Does anyone see a problem > with that? I would say ask the vendor of your virtual tape tech. In theory, there's no reason for the virtual tape behavior to be worse, performance wise, than a similar number of writes to the underlying disk tech. 200 simultaneous incrementals isn't out of whack for a medium sized installation, so you ought to be able to manage the raw I/O. If (? Clariion ?) blanches at the mount count, then you can have a few nice rounds of Vendor Pinata while they explain why. I'm sure some IBMers would be pleased to cough "SANergy" or some such in the background of that conversation. In fact, that was my first question, which I sat on until last: if you've already got TSM in the equation, why would you prefer virtual tape on disk to, say, FILE devclasses? I'm sure there are plenty of good reasons for such a call, but that would be the tool I'd reach for first. - Allen S. Rout
