Re: Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files
Hi Richard, I use CDP right now as a test for backing up local files on workstations. As fas as i seen, i don't know if you want to use it on fileserver with that many files Try it on your workstation first, than you see the product for yourself. Did you also tried: "MEMORYEFFICIENTBACKUP YES" ? An other thing you can do besides putting more memory in your server is to split the filesystems Regards, Maurice van 't Loo - Original Message - From: "Dearman, Richard" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Tuesday, October 04, 2005 6:31 PM Subject: [ADSM-L] Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files Has anyone used " Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files" product on a file server with a very large amount of files and directories. I have a server with millions of files and directories that I can not get backed because the TSM client either runs out of memory and shuts down trying to do an incremental, I tried journaling but it keeps failing as well. This product seems to be journaling continuously which would be good so the journal would not fill up and fail but can it complete the initial filesytem backup. Two questions on 5.1.x --> 5.3.x
Hello all, Sorry to bother you not with one, but three questions... I am in the process of upgrading a customer's TSM Server from 5.1.6.4 to 5.3.x. I am taking some precautonary measures due to the size of the DB (240GB). Here is what I thought of: 1) Backup DB and apply 5.1.10 fixpack (Scheduled for today) 2) Run CLEANUP BACKUPGROUPS 3) Upgrade HP-UX (Now 11.0) to 11i and atdd 4) Backup DB and install 5.3.0.0 5) Install 5.3.2 So question one is: Is this path correct or should I think of installing 5.2.x in between? And would you recommend 5.3.2 or a more conservative 5.3.1.6? For question 3, the following info: The database was behaving VERY badly. It had been allocated as 240 (!) volumes 1GB each on 3 separate filesystems (EMC disks). I already changed it to 8 33GB volumes on 8 filesystems. Performance became a little better (backup DB went from almost 4 hours to 2h50m), but it still suffers bad on expirations. It takes 3+ hours to expire a million objects, and by analysing actlog I found that it takes almost a month to expire twice the same node/filespace. At these moments, sar -d shows one of the DB volumes at nearly 100% util, but with a rather low number of operations (long seeks? DB fragmentation too bad?). So question is: Should I leave the DB this way, or use the other disks given to me by the storage admin: 32 8GB slices on separate disks. Take this slices and make 8 33GB striped LVs (4 slices each), create the filesystems and put the DB volumes there? Thanks a lot for your attention, Paul van Dongen

There has been repeated discussion on this list about the fact that version 5.3.0 of the client (you didn't say what version you are using) doesn't fully support open file backups of Windows 2003 clients; Windows handles open file backups in some cases through use of the Volume Shadow Copy service. Per Microsoft's support site, try upgrading Windows 2003 to SP1. If that doesn't work, try waiting for 5.3.1 of the Windows client, which is supposed to fix the issue. -- Mark Stapleton ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) IBM Certified Advanced Deployment Professional Tivoli Storage Management Solutions 2005 IBM Certified Advanced Technical Expert (CATE) AIX Berbee Information Networks Office 262.521.5627

Re: Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files
Richard, Certainly take a look at the newer 5.3 TSM client versions of journaling, if you haven't already, as there are many improvements over 5.2's and below at this level (including a new B-tree based journal DB which is much more reliable and isn't limited to 2GB in size). Otherwise, can you tell us what problems are you encountering with journaling? CDP sits on top of the same Win32 API that the TSM Journal engine does - I personally haven't tried it on large file servers, only on local workstations. I guess you'd need to make sure you tune/allocate enough disk space for the \RealTimeBackup local backup area for a start (from the CDP 'gui' in the Configure tree). As a matter of interest, is anyone else using CDP in this way yet (I know it's only been out and about externally for a few weeks). If you're not familiar with it, take a look here for more details: http://www-306.ibm.com/software/tivoli/products/continuous-data-protection/ Rgds, David McClelland Storage and Systems Management Specialist IBM Tivoli Certified Deployment Professional (ITSM 5.2) SSO UK Service Delivery – Storage Services IBM Global Services – IBM United Kingdom "Dearman, Richard" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent by: "ADSM: Dist Stor Manager" 04/10/2005 17:31 Please respond to "ADSM: Dist Stor Manager" To ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU cc Subject [ADSM-L] Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files Has anyone used " Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files" product on a file server with a very large amount of files and directories. Can't Start TSM Server 5.3 on AIX 5.1
Hello TSM'ers: Following the upgrade of our server to TSM 5.3, it is not coming up, complaining that all sessions, including administrative, are disabled. The SERVER_CONSOLE admin id does not have sufficient privileges to re-enable the sessions. Has anyone experienced a similar problem and is there a way out? IBM is claiming that it's pretty much impossible to do anything at this point, short of restoring the database to an earlier version (we still have a backup of the server prior to the upgrade). I would appreciate anyone's assistance. TSM client service update
Hi Folks, TSM client 5.2.4 on W3K sp4, Server 5.2.4.5 on W2K sp4. I've been attempting to update the TSM client scheduler with a changed dsm.opt - all that's different is the nodename. But every time it completes the supposed update, I check the dsmsched.log and it's the same old name which is logging in to TSM. So, I thought I should uninstall the TSM services, which I did. Tried to re-install it and at the end of the button clicking, press Finish and I am presented with a one button window which says "Error 23 installing the service: . The service is currently marked for deletionThe service wasn't installed" I've copied the formatting errors from the window. My only option is to press the OK button, which shows me that last window of the service install, I click Finish again - same result. Any clues anywhere? Upgrade to TSM 5.3 w/ TSM 5.2 Web interface messes up admin windo w frame
Greetings, I posted this to the list last week, but for some reason I have not been getting the digest, so I decided I better post it again in case people replied and I didn't get it. Sorry for the redundant traffic. I just upgraded a AIX 5.3 TSM server to TSM 5.3.1.6 and also installed the migration TSM 5.2 Web interface. The 5.2 Web interface basically works, but the center frame is missing. The left hand navigation bar is correct, but when I open up something that should produce content in the center frame, instead it opens a whole new window and puts the content there. I can limp along with this behavior, but it is annoying to have to go back and forth between two windows. This happens on every browser we try, both Explorer and Netscape, so it isn't tied to the browser I don't think. If this is an old topic I am sorry, I looked for it on the archives and couldn't find it. I have trouble believing it is happening to us, but no one else. Best Regards, John D. I believe IBM TSM is working on this. I opened a PMR with TSM, and the support person stated that there are 5 other new pmrs on this same issue. I am awaiting feedback from TSM support on this issue. Ben, Thanks for your post. We called this in to the Support Center, but they didn't have an answer for us. I am glad to see we aren't the only ones seeing this. Well, I'm not glad for you, of course, but you know what I mean. At least it relieves my mind that I didn't do something obvious and stupid while installing the Web interface. The missing fileset idea isn't bad. I will compare our production TSM server (AIX 4.3.3) with the the 5.3 server and see if anything leaps out at me. Another thought I had was that there might be something missing from the aix.idl file that is included in the solaris, hp, or windows ones. I thought about installing one of the other .idls to see if that made a difference, but it seemed likely to screw up something even worse. Best Regards, John D. And would you recommend 5.3.2 or a more conservative 5.3.1.6? I went from 5.1.9 to 5.3.1 on win 2K server, with no problems. I did not migrate to 5.2 first. I just followed all the v5.3 README instructions carefully, as well as the instructions in this cool audio power point presentation: http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=663&context=SSGSG7&q1=tsm+5.3+upgrade&uid=swg21214007&loc=en_US&cs=utf-8&lang=en Make sure to backup the volumehist and dev stuff too, but all that is in the README and the presentation. Good luck. Alex For question 3, the following info: The database was behaving VERY badly.

Re: Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files
My experience for Journal Based Backup is that it does not fix problems you can run in when single filesystem has millions of files/dir's in a single filespace and you get the "ran out of memory" symptom, the reason is that you must complete one non-journal based incremental backup before the JBB can start journaling, and on default, every first time after Windows reboots Also I have the feeling that the "MEMORYEFFICIENTBACKUP YES" does often not help. Split up filesystems or throw in extra memory are perhaps, in some cases, not an alternative. Others experience and solutions very welcome :) Best regards, Kolbeinn Jósepsson - Systems Engineer Tivoli Certified Consultant - IBM Tivoli Storage Manager V5.1 IBM Certified Deployment Professional - Tivoli Storage Resource Manager V1.2 www.nyherji.is "Maurice van 't Loo" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent by: "ADSM: Dist Stor Manager" 05.10.2005 08:46 Please respond to "ADSM: Dist Stor Manager" To ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU cc Subject Re: Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files Hi Richard, I use CDP right now as a test for backing up local files on workstations. This product seems to be journaling continuously which would be good so the journal would not fill up and fail but can it complete the initial filesytem backup. There is a registry entry under TSM scheduling service that needs to be changed. You can search your registry for the old node name until you find it. Re: Adding a D52 frame to my 3584 library
Just added one 6 months ago, to a base L32 frame. Depends on the base frame, minor differences in physical mounting. I think it took about 2 hours, I had 2 drives in my D52 though. Even without the drives, with slot config change, after they are done you need to halt and restart TSM server to pick up config changes. No big deal. David B. Re: Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files
I am not an expert on filter and other Windows drivers, but basically a filter driver is a piece of software that runs in kernel (privileged) mode, so it has access to the system memory and hardware. It gets its name because it "filters" (intercepts and manipulates) I/O requests. For example, antivirus scanners are typically implemented as a filter driver, as is the TSM LVSA which is used for online image and OFS backups. CDP is implemented as a filter driver to detect I/O requests, which is how it figures out that files are changing. I think I got that right... :-) Regards, Andy Andy Raibeck IBM Software Group Tivoli Storage Manager Client Development Internal Notes e-mail: Andrew Raibeck/Tucson/[EMAIL PROTECTED] Internet e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] IBM Tivoli Storage Manager support web page: http://www-306.ibm.com/software/sysmgmt/products/support/IBMTivoliStorageManager.html The only dumb question is the one that goes unasked. Hello, Something changed in our TSM environment a ways back and just noticed that the daily full DB backups aren't expiring... I have them all the way back to the beginning of July. Re: Upgrade to TSM 5.3 w/ TSM 5.2 Web interface messes u p admin windo w frame
Nancy, Since the problem in your case appeared when you upgraded from AIX 5.3 ML 2 to ML3, it should be easy to go through the /smit.log to figure out what filesets got upgraded. There will be long list, but most of them can be eliminated from consideration. But I think of the Java filesets, for example. Were they upgraded at ML3? I can't tell with our system, since our old system was AIX 4.3.3, and the new system came with AIX 5.3 ML3 already installed. I looked on the IBM web site and it shows Java14.sdk1.4.2.10 Java14.source1.4.2.10 To be the level ML3 installs, and ML2 has: Java14.sdk1.4.2.3 Java14.source1.4.2.3 It would be interesting to downgrade Java to the older version and see if it changes anything. I opened a PMR with TSM, and the support person stated that there are 5 other new pmrs on this same issue. I am awaiting feedback from TSM support on this issue. We are at TSM Version 5.2.3.5, AIX OS Level 5.3 Mod 2 - We just upgraded the AIX OS to 5.3 Mod 3 on Mondayand the same issue is now occuring in our environment. With the operations results opening in a seperate frame. Funny thing is that we have done the same thing on our test Solaris TSM server and it worked fine. Is you installation on AIX 5.3 also? I was wondering if there was some prereq fileset that is missing or something... Re: DB backups not expiring
Dave, I believe that DB backups will not be deleted unless you tell them to. I have created an administrative schedule that runs daily and deletes DB backups, keeping only the last three. The command is: DELETE VOLHISTORY TODATE=TODAY-3 TOTIME='07:55:00' TYPE=DBBACKUP Yiannakis -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of David Soucy Sent: Wednesday, October 05, 2005 10:23 PM To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: DB backups not expiring Hello, Something changed in our TSM environment a ways back and just noticed that the daily full DB backups aren't expiring... I have them all the way back to the beginning of July. My first inclination was to check DRMDBBACKUPEXPIREDAYS, but it's only set to 7 days. Any ideas of why this would be happening? Thanks -dave
