Hi, TSM 5.2.1 Library Firmware 6.03 RMU Firmware 190B.4 4 LTO2 drive @ 53Y2 Our library seems to have a problem checking anything out while drive 3 is in use - the operation always fails.. In other words it seems to only want to use Drive3 to check vols out, which seems a bit strange. We recently had a fourth drive added to our library and with that all the related firmwares were brought up to the latest level, which I hoped would rid us of this problem, but it's still prevelant. Just wanted to check here before I raise a call.. More tapes used than necessary
Hi *SMers, TSM 5.2.1 server W2K sp4 3583 L72 I can't get my head around why this is happening... A number of SQL clients back up to the SQL_TAPEPOOL, with collocation turned off. However, we are only storing 68 MB from all the sql clients so I would expect all that data to fit on one tape, which it does. But for some reason TSM wants to pick up two scratch volumes everyday to backup the SQL diskpool to - not the already defined volume. Eachmorning I find myself performing a 'move data' on the two newly defined vols just to move the data back to the slowly accumilating volume. One thing that occured to me was that the volume had about 37% reclaimable space - and if the files which had expired were at the end of the volume, would TSM be able to locate the correct position to start writing from? That's the only reason I can think why this is happening. Can any one else shine a bit of light on this problem? TSM db restore to new hardware
Hi all, I have a question regarding hardware migration: Our current system is TSM 5.2.2.4 on a Win2k server with a SCSI attached 3583. We have purchased new server hardware (we will be using Win2k3) and an ADIC i2000 library with 4x LTO2 SCSI drives. The library is being attached to the new server at the moment and I will need to migrate to the new setup as soon as possible. I am hoping I will be able to run a db backup on the current system and restore to the new system (I'm assuming I will need to delete and redefine drives, library, paths and storage pools once 'Server1' is started on the new system?). Has anybody carried out a similar task and if so can you offer any advice on the best way to migrate from our current setup to the new? I will be installing TSM (5.2.2.4) to the new server today or tomorrow - our current db volume is on the local D: drive but will live on the E: drive of the new server - will it be possible to restore to E:? Should I use 'dsmfmt -db' and 'dsmfmt -log' to create the appropriate volumes? A friend has suggested creating a new devc of 'file', running a db backup to use this devc and then copying the backup across to the new server to use for the db restore rather than trying to mount a tape in the new library - would this be possible? I would be very grateful for any advice or suggestions, many thanks. Hi, Rainer - I envision Beaker, at Muppet Labs... :-) About all it amounts to is writing an ASCII string to a file, from data which has been compiled for other purposes in the server anyway. Any "overhead" would be undetectably small; and in any case, the value of the data far outweighs the tiny cost to write the record. Running with accounting turned on is common. Fear can be ameliorated by trying out a previously untried feature. Richard Sims
NDMP file report?
Hello everyone! Is there a way to find a listing of a particular file & the size of the file and all backup versions which resides on the NAS? Our data mover is defined as nas_server_2 and the filespace it resides within is /opensys and the full path is: /opensys/os2/snap and the filename is: SNAP.FILELIST.SYSE000C.Z. But it shouldn't be a problem getting a tape mounted in your new library, if you've defined and tested it. I think it is a good idea to make sure the hardware works, before you try to do the DB restore. (Just run a DB backup of your new, almost-empty DB to tape as a test.) I would be very grateful for any advice or suggestions, many thanks. >> 1) MAKE SURE that before you run your last DB backup on the old system, you update all your disk storage pools to highmig=0 and lowmig=0, get all the data pushed out to tape (because those disk storage pools are going bye-bye.) 2) Don't bother creating the storage pools on your new system until AFTER you reload the DB. When you reload the DB, TSM will see the OLD definitions of the storage pools, pointing to the old disk volumes, and will give you a bunch of errors because it can't find them. So you will end up deleting the old disk storage pools and creating new ones, anyway. 3) When you set up the library definition on your new system, create a COPY of your devconfig file and save it under a new name. Because when you reload the TSM db, again it picks up the OLD library definitions (paths, addresses, etc.). It won't know about the new library. You will either have to update it's path, or delete and redefine it. You will definitlely need to delete and redefine the drives, because they will have new serial#. For me, it's easier to copy the commands out of the devconfig copy, than to figure them out again. If you end up using a new library name, you have to check all your tapes in to the new library. 4) The DB restore will take probably 3 times as long as it takes to backup. But you will see its progress in the DOS window where the DB restore is running, so don't be distressed. Can't think of anything else at the moment. It's actually a pretty fun exercise! Write down all the steps you do, and when you're done you have a disaster recovery plan! Re: LTO1 / LTO3 mixing
You have to set the FORMAT= in the devclass to ULTRIUMC and LTO-1 and ULTRIUM3C for the LTO-3 if you want to keep them separate. Then you define a stgpool for the LTO3 devclass. The only gotcha I found was trying to do a move data from the LTO-1 stgpool to the LTO-3 stgpool. It just sat there waiting for a mountpoint in the LTO-3 devclass. Never moved. Opened a PMR, did some traces and found out that the issue is to complex to fix in the device allocation algorithm, so they're chaning the documentation to state that "true" mixed media support is only fully supported if you partition the library. NOT a solution in my opinion. Re: More tapes used than necessary
Need a little clarification here Are your clients backups going to a disk pool first or directly to SQL_TAPEPOOL? Is SQL_TAPEPOOL your primary tape pool, or a copy pool? The "normal" sequence of events if you're backing up to disk is something like this: - Clients backup to the disk pool throughout the day. - Sometime later, you do a "backup stgpool" to backup the disk pool to the tape COPY pool. - Then you do a migration of the disk pool to the tape PRIMARY pool (SQL_TAPEPOOL in your case?) (this could also happen throughout the day based on threshold value) - Then you do "backup stgpool" of the tape PRIMARY pool to the tape COPY pool. - Then you send the copy pool volumes offsite. If your problem is occurring during the migration, check the DISK pool definition and see if "migration processes" is set greater than 1. If so, TSM will need that many tapes to write to. Migrate stgpool fails
After upgrading to TSM 5.3.0 on RS6000 with AIX 5.2 we started to us the newly available MIGRATE STGPOOL command rather than updating the LOWMIG=0 and HIGHMIG=0 setting needed in previous versions. Now when there is nothing to migrate we get a failure message. There really isn't any failure. So the ANR4924E message is very helpful but the ANR2752E message seems misleading and inappropriate. Re: More tapes used than necessary
You may be running into the Filling problem, as described in ADSM QuickFacts. Your KEEPMP and MOUNTRetention values may cause TSM to dismount the recently written volume. But if a volume is dismounting, TSM will shrug its shoulders and call for a scratch to be mounted - ostensibly because it's faster than waiting for a full dismount-store-retrieve-remount tape sequence. Client OS Level
Server is TSM 5.1.7.0 Performing a select on the platform_name and client_os_level fields in the nodes table yields data, but the digits in the client_os_level field do not match with the actual version of the operating system. Is there a chart out there that tells what "NetWare 5.7" or " Win 5.01" equates to in real life? I would go look at each client individually, except that a) the number of clients we have makes that time prohibitive, and b) believe it or not, I don't have the right to access all of the clients remotely If I could believe that every "Win 5.01" equates to Windows 2000, for example, that would obviously help, but I'm not sure of that either. I upgraded to TSM Server 5.2.2.0 on AIX 5.3. After the upgrade, processes couldn't find scratch tapes in my STK library. My IBM library continues to work fine. NetWare seems to have the folowing version levels: NetWare 6 - 5.6.XX NetWare 6.5 - 5.7.XX The XX value seems to correspond to Service Pack levels. For example, 5.7.03 for an 6.5 SP3 machine. Re: TSM db restore to new hardware
Other options that you could do to speed up the migration: - used shared storage for the DB (create a mirror on the shared storage), shut down old and hook up or present the storage to your new server (then create a mirror on local disks if you want the DB there) - if the servers support the same type of disk, depending on your disk configuration you may be able to swap disks into your new server. - if you have a limited migration window, you can do a full db backup to tape, restore this on your new system with commit=no then when you are ready to migrate, do an incremental on your old to devtype file if you like, shutdown old server and do a DB restore with commit = yes from the incremental We've done upgrades and migrates to new hardware all of the above ways over the years. Just test out before you do for real. Should I use 'dsmfmt -db' and 'dsmfmt -log' to create the appropriate volumes? >>That's the thing you MUST do. A friend has suggested creating a new devc of 'file', running a db backup to use this devc and then copying the backup across to the new server to use for the db restore rather than trying to mount a tape in the new library - would this be possible? >>That will work, too. Write down all the steps you do, and when you're done you have a disaster recovery plan! differences between dsmadmc output
Under dsmadmc version 5.2.2.0 and earlier, this command issued would result in no output: bash-2.04$ dsmadmc -pa=blah -id=blah -comma "select process_num, process, status from processes where process='Some Process'" | tail +10 | grep , Where "Some Process" did not exist in the process table. I'm not sure I understand what needs to be corrected... I don't know the history of the ANS8000I message, but from what I can gather, it is working correctly in 5.3. If you look up ANS8000I, you'll see it is issued when running a macro or when running in batch mode. Since that message contains the text you are grep-ing on, it is displayed. You can add the -DATAONLY=YES option when invoking dsmadmc to suppress ANS8000I and other informational messages displayed by the admin client (barring error conditions, which are not suppressed). Try it and see if that helps. This doc offers alot of information about improving performance. I'm especially interested in this because it took 56 minutes to restore 6.24G of data, from Novell server to Novell server, over a 100MB pipe. Our TSM version is 5.1.1 ( I know,,,we need to upgrade)...and the client version is 5.2. In the dsmserv.opt file the MIRRORWRITE DB = SEQUENTIAL. According to this doc, we'll get better performance is we change MIRRORWRITE DB to PARALLEL. I thought I would do this then add the DBPAGESHADOW = YES parameter. (the MIRRORWRITE LOG = PARALLEL) My plan is to make small changes to see if there is an impact, positive or negative. We have 2G of virtual memory, so I changed the bufpoolsize from 262144 to 524288 and thought I'd make the MIRRORWRITE DB change also. Has anyone made these changes and seen any performance improvements/degredations? Any experiences or advice is welcome. Thanks for any input, Debbie

What did the tranfer rate show as? 1024 x 6.24 = 6389MB (megabyte) Network is usually in Megabit, yes? 6389MB x 8 = 51112 (megabit) >>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 08/03/2005 3:49:17 PM >>> This doc offers alot of information about improving performance.

Re: Technote 1200328
It looked to me like it could just be a case of lots of small files spread out across lots of tapes. Average file size was ~200k, with ~27,500 files. With that many small-ish files, if they were spread out across many tapes, you'd spend most of that 56min waiting for tape mounts/seeks. Short of collocation, not much would save you in a situation like that. If all these files were basically on 1or2 tapes, this theory falls apart, however. Re: differences between dsmadmc output
The 5.3.0.0 outputs an extra header line -- the ANS message just happens to be the last line displayed. Changing the tail +10 to tail +11 and the output is the same between versions. Re: Who has the oldest TSM installation?
We first installed adsm on VM in the 1993 timeframe and have since migrated to AIX come to think of it, it is time for another upgrade. Take care, Peter Amateurs backup, professionals - restore!
