We are currently implementing a "backup your laptop" service. One of our
goals is that the user must be able to do everything them selfs and that
we (the admins) have as less work as possible. Another goal is that it
must work over slow connections since most of these users are travelling
and usually on low bandwidth connections.
So we decided to only backup office documents and the like. We enforce
this using client option settings and that all works pretty well. Only
thing is that if a users does a "dsmc i" it starts backing all these
system files because of asr. Which we don't want and is pretty useless
since we don't off "rebuild your laptop up to the last desktop icon" and
all other program files are excluded anyway. Now we tell the users to
type "dsmc i c: d: z:" but that is of course not as nice as a
exclude.asr or something.

EXPORT question

2005-02-22 Thread Justin Case
What happens to a node's data on a TSM server that has exported from one
TSM server to another TSM server ?

Does any thing happen on the server where the node was exported from ?
Because we want to test some different retention levels on the server where
the node's data
was imported to so is there any risk to the data where it originally
resided ?
Has any one tested any thing like this ?

We are not planning to backup any more data to the node that was exported
on the destination server where
we imported it. but to keep backups running on the original TSM server.
Thanks

Justin

First and foremost: When posting such server problems, include your TSM
server level information, e.g. "5.1.7.3". This will allow everyone to
ascertain whether this is an old problem, resolved by some maintenance,
or something new.
Now, does this occur at every expiration? Is any other server process
running at the time?
Do not be tempted to run an AUDITDB without contacting IBM about the
problem, and having them advise on a course of action: you could end up
in worse trouble if you just plow ahead.

Regarding 3494 lib and volume catagories

2005-02-22 Thread Farren Minns
Hi all

At the moment our IBM 3494 tape library with 2 internal 3590 H1A tape
drives is used by just one TSM server ( running Solaris 2.7 ). But, in the
near future I am being asked to make it available for use by another server
( BRMS running on an AS400 ). This is something I know very little about,
but am aware that it has something to do with categories within the tape
library. So only one server will have access to category 'a' while another
will access category 'b' for example ( at least I think it's as simple as
that ). But I do not understand exactly where these categories are defined
and how to tell TSM not to use volumes of category 'b' for example. I am
not worrying about the BRMS side of things as this will be dealt with by
another department.

Can anyone point me in the direction for some good resources on this and
indeed can anyone who already does this give me any advice.

Many thanks in advance

All the best

Farren Minns

Re: Expiration Fails

2005-02-22 Thread Richard Sims
Given that you're running a "museum" level of the product, you can't
contact IBM for help on this. I would begin by studying the Activity
Log around the time the problem started to get perspective on what
caused it - particularly if there was a server crash, and possibly the
loss of a db mirror. You're still not telling us the full level of your
server: there is a 3.1.2.90 level you might apply, if not already
there, which may mitigate future problems within ADSM 3.1, but I would
not expect it to correct the current, unless Activity Log research
suggests otherwise. Whereas this problem is occurring in Expiration as
well as Migration, it's unlikely that there's a simple external cause,
such as a corrupted device driver.
Beyond that, you're stuck with either performing an AUDITDB and hope
for the best, or restore to before the problem. Either way, be sure to
have a full db backup before you shut down.

Re: exclude ASR

I believe exclude.systemobject is used to exclude individual system
objects.
Eg: exlcude.systemobject sysfiles

I will try that but since I already had a exclude.systemobject as a
client option I figured it was already excluded.

Dear Kyle,
If i am going to restore to a different hardware, then what options would i
take when i boot from Windows installation CD, after restore?

I am a little confused here.

Re: Slow Netwre 6 backups

2005-02-22 Thread Troy Frank
Did the problem start before you updated all your components? Here's a
few things I would check first (not neccessarily in this order).

1. Since the server is still v5.2 , I'd try back-revving the novell
tsm client to 5.2.3.0
2. Check the speed/duplex settings of your NIC. If it's at AUTO, try
forcing a speed/duplex. If it's forced now, try setting it to AUTO
3. Check for a newer driver for your NIC.
4. Apply Netware 6 SP5 .
5. Try to determine what event triggered the problems. Some old posts
hint that it could have been installing the newer TSM client.
Look through the dsm.opt for any entries that might have changed
(compare to older clients dsm.opt).

Guys,

Is anyone out there experiencing extremely slow backup issue's with
netware 6.x servers? Some of the larger servers are taking days to
complete
a backup. During this time the servers are running at 100%
utilization.

Environment:
Tsm server is 5.2.0 on a solaris Platform
Tsm Client is 5.3.0. Using latest Tsa's, TSAFS.NLM (6.50.14) and
SMDR.NLM (6.54.01)
Client Platform Netware 6, SP3.

I also get the following errors in the client's error log. I can't
seem to find too much info about the sessRecVerb error? Though the
Session
initializing messages are fairly self explanitory.

02/08/2005 00:10:14 sessRecvVerb: Error -50 from call to 'readRtn'.
02/08/2005 00:10:14 ANS1809W Session is lost; initializing session
reopen procedure.
02/08/2005 00:10:15 ANS1809W Session is lost; initializing session
reopen procedure.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated

thanks in advance Cameron

Reclamation and collocation...

2005-02-22 Thread asr
Greetings.

I've got a peeve about how TSM reclaims collocated stgpool volumes, and I
wanted to see if it is widely shared. If so, I'll try to distill it into a
sane feature request.

I've got a bunch of collocated stgpools now, and I find that I am frequently
reclaiming volumes which are in a FILLING state. This seems to be
counterproductive to me.

I understand the math behind it: If pct_reclaim >= threshold, then it's a
candidate for reclamation. But my motiviation to reclaim a tape that is only
20% written is mighty low. I'd just as soon wait another week/month/whatever,
and use the tape drive time to do other things.

I find that reclamation occupies more tape-head time than any other activity
my TSM server does; I'm essentially never idle unless I've specifically
cleared the decks for some reason. So spending a lot of time doing "work"
that doesn't buy me anything is aggravating.

So, I ask: Is there some aspect to this I'm missing? An advantage to
reclaiming a tape that's "50% reclaimable" but only 40% written? A knob that
already exists to limit reclamation to full volumes?

Or is this same behavior irritating to you folks too?
