Hi. Does anyone know a way to check which volumes are standing in the CAP on a STK9710 robot, from within TSM? I know that I can check in all volumes and check them out again, and then check the activity log in TSM to see which volumes was in the CAP but this is a very cumbersome method. Is ther an other way? ISC on WinXP or Unix
Hi All, Has anyone yet mastered to install the ISC on Windows XP? If so, what's the catch, because around 15-20% of installation it quits on my PC with an error. Also on Unix, is it possible to use another /tmp instead of /tmp? Because the Linux system I'm trying to install it on has not enough space available on /tmp and I don't feel like rearring all filesystems, just to make space in /tmp for the installation of ISC. Regards, Richard.
Re: ISC on WinXP or Unix
Hi. On unix you may try to define the environment variable TMPDIR to a new tmp directory with enough space. This is a unix way to tell a system to use another tmp but it depend on the install script if it use the $TMPDIR. URL for TSM 5.3 Manuals
Just in case folks have not yet discovered the new location for the TSM books, here's the URL: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/tivihelp/index.jsp You can save the pdf files in Adobe Acrobat. The older TSM version manuals (5.2.2, 5.2, 5.1, 4.2) are still on the Tivoli software information center site. Joerg Pohlmann 604-535-0452
Useful TSM 5.3 URLs
The TSM 5.3 redbook SG246638 (use sg246638 as search argument on www.redbooks.ibm.com) has a very useful hint to go to http://www-306.ibm.com/software/sysmgmt/products/support/IBMTivoliStorageManager.html and use TSMADMINCENTER as search argument. Not only will you find useful information about the Admin Center but also useful information about upgrading to TSM 5.3. If anyone has additional experience on moving TSM administrator personal, operational, and configuration work habits from the Web Admin to the ISC/Admin Center - please post this on this discussion list so that we can all get a quicker start on best use of the new interface. LTO2 tape drive performance with LTO1 media?
We're looking at replacing our current LTO1 tape drives with LTO2 drives, and I was wondering what the performance is like using LTO1 media on an LTO2 drive? Will I see the same performance benefit, just without the increased capacity, or is the performance benefit less with an LTO1 cartridge? We have an abundance of LTO1 media, so we won't be changing media types any time soon. Any info is appreciated! Re: LTO2 tape drive performance with LTO1 media?
I'm running LTO2 drives with a mix of LTO2 and LTO1 media -- we kept the LTO1 tapes for off-siting because we have LTO1 drives in our hot-site contract and because reclaim processing based on %full tends to suck as the capacity increases. So far (6 months experience) it looks like you will get at least LTO1 performance; reclaims and copies may even work a bit faster because of the higher drive transfer rate, if your system can deliver data at that rate. Thanks Rainer. I have successfully installed the ISC on W2K Server, but on my W2K Professional, the install still fails. You could find details about the error in C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\ISCRuntimeInstall.log . If you want to do a uninstall read carefully the README.INSTALL (last section). Do exactely what is written in this section. (If you do not follow the instructions all further installations will fail !!). README.INSTALL -- Manually uninstalling the Integrated Solutions Console: If the install program fails or you are unable to uninstall with the wizard, you can try to manually remove the Integrated Solutions Console runtime and then install again. To manually remove the console runtime, perform the following steps: 1. Open a command window or go to a command prompt. 2. Stop the console server (which is the application server named ISC_Portal). o UNIX: /PortalServer/bin/stopISC.sh ISC_Portal o Windows: \PortalServer\bin\stopISC.bat ISC_Portal 3. Stop the application server named server1 by issuing one of the following commands: o For installations on AIX, Linux, and Solaris systems, issue the following command (on a single line): /AppServer/bin/stopServer.sh server1 -user application_server_administrator -password application_server_password o For installations on Windows systems, issue the following command (on a single line): \AppServer\bin\stopServer.bat server1 -user application_server_administrator -password application_server_password where: is the root directory for your Integrated Solutions Console runtime installation. 4. To clean the system temporary directory, perform the following steps: 1. Change to the system temporary directory. The temporary directory is the value of the operating system variable %TEMP% on Windows systems and /tmp on the other systems. 2. Save a copy of the following files in the temporary directory: o ISCRuntimeInstall.log o ISCRuntime.rsp o ISCRuntimeUninstall.log o All of the Portal*.log files 3. In the temporary directory, delete all of the files and the directories that begin with the string ISC (such as ISCRuntime.rsp, ISC_TEMP, ISCToolkitInstall.log) and all files that begin with the string Portal (such as PortalInit.log and PortalSetupWAS.log). 5. To clean the registry that InstallShield for Multiplatforms uses: 1. Locate the file vpd.properties. o On AIX, Linux, and Solaris systems, search for the file. There might be multiple vpd.properties files on an AIX system. If there are multiple copies, be sure to edit all copies of the file when you perform the edit step. o On Windows systems, search the system directory (such as C:\WINNT\vpd.properties). 2. Save a copy of the vpd.properties file. 3. Use a text editor to open the vpd.properties file. Use an editor that does not wrap lines so that you can easily isolate single lines for removal. Setting the editor to use a monospace font (for example, Courier) will make it easier to see the file structure. 4. Delete each line that refers to the path for the root directory of the console runtime. If there are no remaining lines in vpd.properties, leave the file empty or delete it. NOTE: On AIX the product registry contains entries regarding the installation, which must be manually removed. To remove those entries run vpddel. Run lslpp -L to obtain a list of everything in the product registry. Locate the enteries for that contain the installation directory of the Integrated Solutions Console. Using the output from the command, construct a vpddel command for each entry. 3584 Library Mixed LTO1-LTO2 Environment
Happy New Year everyone, It is my understanding that the TSM server version 5.2 allow you to manage IBM 3584 library without physically partitioning into logical libraries to use both LTO1 and LTO2 drives. If the library is physically partitioned logically into two separate libraries then I can see how LTO1 and LTO2 can be configured to only to use the LTO1 tapes into LTO1 drives and LTO2 into LTO2 drives.. since the TSM server will have two device names like smc0/smc1 and multi device classes can be created. My question is this... if IBM 3584 is not partitioned and configured with TSM server 5.2, but still wants to use both LTO1 and LTO2 but keep them separate how can this be done? How does TSM ensure that the LTO2 tapes are only mounted in LTO2 drives and /or LTO1 tapes are only mounted in LTO1 drives? Sung Y. Lee
Re: 3584 Library Mixed LTO1-LTO2 Environment
A quick answer is that although it is not now required in TSM 5.2 to partition the library, you can still do it if you want or need to. I have LTO1 and 2 in same 3584, without partitioning. LTO2 tapes obviously are only used in LTO2 drives. However my LTO1 tapes can be used in BOTH drives and I have no problem with that. I think there is a way that you can restrict the LTO1 tapes to only LTO1 drives, I just haven't needed to do it. David B. Re: 3584 Library Mixed LTO1-LTO2 Environment
My fix was to set all LTO2 tapes as scratch and all LTO1 tapes as 'private'. I then assigned specific volumes from the LTO1 set to the storage pools I wanted them in. It took about a week to get the LTO1 pools balanced. Be warned if you do this that a) database backups can be to specific volumes but the deleted backup volumes will be set to 'scratch' and not 'private' (under TSM 5.1.6; may differ in more recent versions) and b) that TSM will grab the lowest numbered volume in the scratch pool when it needs another scratch tape. Re: 3584 Library Mixed LTO1-LTO2 Environment
Yeah, but look at the question -- 3584 libraries don't have the smarts for this. You can partition the library, but that's not the same thing -- you get two (or more) /dev/smcx library controllers and you've got both tapes and drives split and unavailable for common access. IIRC, there's something in TSM 5.3 for this. I'm waiting for the documentation to show up. Sung Y. Lee

You can do this with IBM 3583 and 3584 libraries. There are some restrictions with the 3583 setup, but both work well. Re: 3584 Library Mixed LTO1-LTO2 Environment
As a further answer from before on how to keep LTO1 tapes from being used in LTO2 drives. The DEVCLASS forLTO1 tapes has a parameter called MOUNT LIMIT. If you say have 6 LTO1 drives and 4 LTO2 drives, then set the MOUNT LIMIT of your LTO1 devclass to 6. That, I believe generally prevents LTO1 tapes from being used in LTO2 drives. As I think LTO2 drives are only used by LTO1 tapes, if ALL LTO1 drives are in use AND the MOUNT LIMIT exceeds the number of LTO1 drives. Not sure if that takes care of 100% of the cases and not sure if this would be the correct scenraio for all types of libraries/drives. David B. AIX Raw Logical Volumes, SSA RAID_1 mirroring w/ ITSM DB?
I have heard that you should NOT use AIX JFS Mirroring on Raw Logical Volumes which are used to house the ITSM Log and Database. Instead, if you are using Raw Logical Volumes, you should use ITSM's mirroring facility. What I have heard is that there is a data integrity issue here. I am not doing this. But what about doing mirroring at the SSA Adapter level? What if you create an SSA raid_1 (mirrored, but not striped) array and then put an AIX Raw Logical Volume on it, and use that for the ITSM Database or Log? Would this involve the same problems/risks as doing this with AIX JFS Mirroring? My first guess is that SSA RAID Mirroring would be safe, and would not involve those same hazards as AIX JFS Mirroring. Anybody have experience with this? 1. Is it safe? 2. Does it perform better? (It should, by moving the mirroring from software into the adapter microcode.) (The question also applies to SSA raid_10, but for the ITSM DB in particular, I would expect raid_10 (striped set of mirrors) to perform slower than raid_1 (just mirroring), so I have no interest in using raid_10 for the ITSM DB. I do plan to use raid_10 for ITSM Storage Pool volumes though, which I assume will be OK since AIX JFS Mirroring works OK there.) Re: ISC on WinXP or Unix
Hello, how many memory does the PC have? Under AIX you need a minimum of 1GB memory to instell the ISC. I suspect that the same is true for Windows...
