Yeah, but look at the question -- 3584 libraries don't have the smarts for this. You can partition the library, but that's not the same thing -- you get two (or more) /dev/smcx library controllers and you've got both tapes and drives split and unavailable for common access.
IIRC, there's something in TSM 5.3 for this. I'm waiting for the documentation to show up. I've done that with ACSLS libraries, and I believe you can do it with 3494 libraries... -----Original Message----- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Kauffman, Tom Sent: Monday, January 03, 2005 4:33 PM To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: Re: 3584 Library Mixed LTO1-LTO2 Environment My fix was to set all LTO2 tapes as scratch and all LTO1 tapes as 'private'. I then assigned specific volumes from the LTO1 set to the storage pools I wanted them in. It took about a week to get the LTO1 pools balanced. Be warned if you do this that a) database backups can be to specific volumes but the deleted backup volumes will be set to 'scratch' and not 'private' (under TSM 5.1.6; may differ in more recent versions) and b) that TSM will grab the lowest numbered volume in the scratch pool when it needs another scratch tape. If the library is physically partitioned logically into two separate libraries then I can see how LTO1 and LTO2 can be configured to only to use the LTO1 tapes into LTO1 drives and LTO2 into LTO2 drives.. since the TSM server will have two device names like smc0/smc1 and multi device classes can be created. My question is this... if IBM 3584 is not partitioned and configured with TSM server 5.2, but still wants to use both LTO1 and LTO2 but keep them separate how can this be done? How does TSM ensure that the LTO2 tapes are only mounted in LTO2 drives and /or LTO1 tapes are only mounted in LTO1 drives? Sung Y. Lee
