Antwort: Re: missing data in summary table

2004-11-30 Thread Karin Dambacher
Hi,

that there were problems in the past with the summary table, I know. But I
have not seen one in the last time, so I wonder about this.
TSM Server is 5.2.1.3 AIX 5
TSM Client is 5.2.3.4 Windows 2003

We saw the problem in the daily e-mail of tsmm, the server is missing
sometimes. And then we looked for the missed days in the summary table, and
the server is not there for that days. The schedules were completed
successfully.
Maybe updating to the newest maintenance/patch will help. I hope so.

Best regards, Karin

As a blanket statement, I'd have to answer "false".

I am not personally aware of any problems in current code (and this
doesn't mean that, hypothetically, there aren't any), but historically TSM
server development is fully aware of past problems.

If you have specific problems with SUMMARY table information, then I
recommend that you:

- Consider the most current server maintenance. Check the README file to
see if any known problems are fixed in that level.

- Search the TSM support page
(
http://www-306.ibm.com/software/sysmgmt/products/support/IBMTivoliStorageManager.html
)
for problems that match your symptoms.

- Open a problem with IBM support.

With that said.. what problems are you currently experiencing with the
SUMMARY table, and which TSM server are you running?

Andy

Subject: Upgrading AIX from 4.3.3 ML 10 to AIX 5.2

Hello TSMers
We are planning to finally update the AIX version on our RS6000 that is
running our TSM server. Currently we are at AIX 4.3.3 ML 10 and we are
planning to install AIX 5.2. The TSM server on this box is sitting at
TSM 5.1.5.4. Can we simply upgrade to AIX 5.2 and leave the TSM server
at 5.1.5.4 for the time being? Would it be beneficial to move to some
level of the TSM 5.2.x server? If we are moving to TSM 5.2.x, can we do
a one step migration from TSM 5.1.5.4 or are there multiple steps to the
upgrade?
Any info or experiences would be most appreciated,
Take care,
Peter

2004-11-30 Thread nghiatd
Dear all,

I 'm using TSM ver 5.1.5 and I want to upgrade to TSM Extended Edition ver 5.2.
I know TSM Ext Edit support creating recovery plan file and disaster recovery
automatically (that TSM ver 5.1.5 doesn't have), larger library.

I also visited web site IBM but I haven't found additional feature.

Does anyone know TSM Exteneded Edition ver 5.2 is different from TSM ver 5.1.5
? (exception these functions)

Thank in advance,

Nghiatd

There are no scratch tapes in storage pools. A tape volume only exists
in a storage pool when it contains client data (and is therefore no
longer a scratch tape).

Once the lan-free data transfer fails it is stated that you must recycle

accomplish this once lan-free has failed? Do you look at the system every
1/2 hour to see if the storage agent is running or do you try to trap a
certain message and then recycle the storage agent? Any suggestions would

I thought that you can not clean a lto drive if it isn't needed. You can put
the cleaning tape in, but it will not clean the drive.
Each cleaning tape also has a counter so you can only use it a few times (most
tapes can be used 50 times).

Re: size of active vs. inactive?

2004-11-30 Thread Johnson, Milton
We have been using a VTL for 3-4 months and we consider it a success.

Environment:

*   OS: AIX 4330-11
*  TSM: Version 4, Release 2, Level 1.7
* Physical Library: Single frame 3494 w/2 3590E1A Drives
*  VTL: Sepaton ES2100 10.5TB (Raw)
* VTL Drive Config: 50 Drives
*VTL Tape Vol Size: 10 GB (picking a size is a religious belief)
* VTL Tape Volume Quantity: 839
* Avg Nightly Backup Amt: ~750 GB
* Client Types: AIX, Windoze(NT, 2000, 2003), Oracle (TDP),
. Microsoft SQL (TDP), Novell
*  Collocation: None
*Total Primary Stg Amt: ~10.3 TB

Problems Leading Requiring Upgrade/VTL Purchase:

* Poor restoration speed for file servers due to:
- No use of collocation because of single frame 3494, amt of primary
stg, desire
. to make tape management simple (read desire tape library to house all
primary
. tape volumes, no overflow to a cabinet/vault)
- Only 2 drives
- Both drives spinning tapes 95%-99% of day doing migrations, backups
and
. reclamations, leaving little time for restorations.

* Poor offsite reclamation performance: Offsite tape count growing to
~500 with
. >400 being >50% reclaimable

* Onsite tape count growth forcing expansion of existing
library/purchase of new
. library and associated disk stgpool

Reasons Pushing to VTL over DASD and Physical Library:

* Ability to do LAN Free back-ups w/o Sanergy
* Storage compression w/o load on TSM server or client
* Performance: Mounts/Unmounts, Reads, Writes (Comparison with physical
tapes
. need to keep in mind your clients/server may not be able to
continuously
. stream data to tape.
* Desire to break out of the structure where growth requires growth of
library
. system AND disk stgpool
* Ease of implementation

Benefits Realized:

* All of the problems requiring the upgrade have been eliminated
* All primary stg pool data has been moved to the VTL
* 3494 is only used for the offsite COPYPOOL stgpools and offsite DB
back-ups
* offsite COPYPOOL reduced to ~195 tapes with ~5 being >50% reclaimable
* 3494 drives no longer have to spin 95% of the day
* Back-up and restorations greatly improved w/o use of collocation
* Implementation was easy:
- VTL was TSM certified just like a physical library
- VTL install and config: ~1 hours
- TSM Config (Library, Drives, stgpool): ~20 minutes
- TSM labeling of 839 volumes: ~2 hours
- ~2 minutes to update the NEXT STGPOOL on the primary disk stgpools to
point to
. VTL stgpool

We viewed the costs of the VTL vs. a physical library with drives (that
performs like the VTL) and associated disk stgpool to be comparable.

Needless to say, I disagree with the statement that TSM doesn't appear
to be a good fit for a VTL. Remember a VTL is just a library that can
mount/unmount a tape in less than one second and read/write to the tape
at disk speeds. Why wouldn't TSM work well with a library on steroids?

Thanks,
H. Milton Johnson

Re: Upgrading AIX from 4.3.3 ML 10 to AIX 5.2

2004-11-30 Thread Bill Boyer
You will need to uninstall the current TSM filesets. There are different
versions for AIX5 in the TSM filesets..plus if you're turning on 64-bit.
When we did this we did:

1. BA DB T=FULL
2. Halt TSM
3. Uninstall TSM (SMITTY)
4. We saved the files DSMSERV.DSK, DSMSERV.OPT, DEVCONFIG and VOLHISTORY
4.5 Renamed the DSMSERV.DSK file so the re-install doesn't touch the
database.
5. Upgrade AIX, Atape if applicable.
6. Install the 5.1.5.4 TSM with appropriate filesets for AIX5 and 64-bit.
7. Rename the DSMSERV.DSK file (from 4.5 above) back
8. Start TSM. I normally bring it up in the foreground for the first time so
I can watch for any errors.

If things don't work out, you can always RESTORE DB from the #1 tape above.

I would also recommend upgrading the firmware on the library/drives and any
tape drives (Atape if using IBM drives). If using non-IBM, you'll need to go
back in and redefine the TSM Devices (SMITTY DEVICES). Get a mapping of the
LBx and MTx before you start so you can make them match after the upgrade.

Re: size of active vs. inactive?

2004-11-30 Thread Prather, Wanda
A lot of the earlier discussions on the list were related to the IBM
3494 VTL, which was designed for handling small chunks of seldom-used
sequential data. It is prone to performance issues when handling LARGE
chunks of sequential data, so it is not a good fit for backup products
like TSM, which are designed to FILL a volume, whether virtual or real.

The 3494 VTL uses a combination of disk and tape, whereas the newer
VTL's are all disk - a very different architecture. And so these newer
types of VTL's will have different issues.

When considering performance issues, know thine own hardware
architecture.

Now, back to the original point of this thread, sizing a library (real
or virtual):

The biggest mistake people make when sizing a TSM library is in just
summing up the total amount of data they will back up.
Not only do you need additional space in the library for your inactive
versions, you must allow for the fact that your volumes WILL NOT BE
FULL. Data is constantly expiring, and on a given day a significant
number of your volumes will be partially full, but below your
reclamation threshold.

My rule(s) of thumb:

1.For file server backups, start with the amount of data you will back
up. Add .05 (5 per cent) multiplied by the number of VERSIONS you will
keep. (IBM recommends 10% as a starting point, but I find the rate of
change on most file servers to be far less than that).

2.For large data bases, (Oracle, Exchange, etc.) start with the amount
of data you will back up. Multiply by the number of versions you will
keep.

3.Add some additional tapes for your DB backups and scratch pool.

4.Assume that you will get at most a compression ratio of 1.5.

5.Assume that your tapes will be, on average 60% full.

6.Now that you have a total, remember that most data centers experience
a rate of growth in data storage of 50-100% PER YEAR. Whatever you buy
for TSM, it better be expandable.

Re: size of active vs. inactive?

2004-11-30 Thread Johnson, Milton
I agree with your comments and yes if your server/client can stream data
fast enough to the tape drive you may be able to out-pace a disk drive.
If you can not keep up with the tape drive then you can take a serious
performance hit when the tape stops, repositions and restarts. This
performance hit is not as great with a virtual tape.

We also looked at the "3494 VTL or Tape Server" and saw that it is
indeed a poor fit for TSM. Most TSM configurations already have a disk
based stgpool front-end to the tape library so you would not gain much
by adding one inside the library.

2004-11-30 Thread Sandra
Dear All,
today i ran into something on :
TSM 5.2.3 on Windows 2000 server.

I have 3582 Library and my sequential storage poool is setup with 9 volumes for
collocation. No as per the policies of various servers' data retention, these
are not enough for this amount of data and my backups fail since none of the
volumes have enough space to carry more data.

I increased the number of scratchs in that pool. but I don't want to run into
same situation when i have to keep volumes in the library for DRM.

Can I checkout volumes that are full and then run audit library or what?

How can I cope with this situation?

Kindly enlighten me !

Kind Regards,
Sandra

The best one can say for the message text is that it fails to distinguish
between two classes of underlying problem:
1.Failure to establish a TCP/IP connection
2.Failure in the authentication process

I would go further and say that the message text is misleading, in that
'server sign on' seems to refer to the authentication process. That seems
to be the way IBM support understood the message text, since their first
suggestion was to reset the password.

The explanation is even worse. It implies that the underlying problem
has to do with an intermemory connection between two components of the
z/OS server, not with any kind of communications between two servers.

It is not clear to me that support shares your view that they should
continue working with me; I reported the IP connectivity problem to them
almost two business days ago and have yet to get any response.

tsm client for netware and netware file compression

2004-11-30 Thread Steve Bennett
We are considering use of client side compression on some of our netware
tsm 5.2 clients.
Netware is set to compress files that haven't been used in 7 days. I
found some doc that said even with "compress yes" the tsm client will
not compress netware compressed files before sending. But what about
when the file goes from netware uncompressed to compressed?
For instance, I create file A on the netware box today and during the
nightly backup it gets processed. Then the file isn't touched for 7 days
so netware compresses it. Does the tsm client then backup the file again
because it changed?
One TSM server is v5.1.8 and another is v5.2.3.2 both runing on win2000
boxes.

I'm confused about something. If memory serves, NetWare compression
doesn't actually compress individual files; my understanding is that it
compresses the entire volume structure. (This was the reason that you
couldn't restore compressed NetWare files to an uncompressed volume, and
vice versa.)

Or are you running a utility that compresses a single file at a time?

(Why do you want to run client compression in the first place?
Constricted network bandwidth?)

Re: tsm client for netware and netware file compression

2004-11-30 Thread Steve Bennett
Mark,
First, let me say I don't do netware. My netware admins indicate that
compression happens at the file level but then maybe we're both confused.
We are going to client compression because of a few clients with network
restrictions but more because we are replacing most of our primary tape
storage with a large local sata. Client cpu is cheaper than a bigger
sata. There won't be much (if any) data in the onsite tapepool which
gets compressed by the drives.

Read Only Script

2004-11-30 Thread Meadows, Andrew
I am attempting to create a script with little success for taking our
LTO tapes that are in read only status and moving the data to other
tapes in the same storage pool, then sending an e mail to a human for
the tape to be removed from the library. Does anyone currently have a
script that does this? An internet search has proved unfruitful and
multiple attempts on my part have proved so as well.
I have TSM Server version 5.2.1.1 and the OS is AIX 5.1.
Thanks,
Andrew

Re: scheduled SQL log backup question

2004-11-30 Thread Steve Schaub
Del/Luc,

I just finished setting up our TDP environment and hit this as well -
the easiest way out is to code a client option set for your TDP-SQL
nodes that excludes the log backups from master. Mine looks like this:

compression yes
inclexcl "include '\...\*' STD_SQLDB"
inclexcl "exclude '\...\master\...\log*'"

Your activity log results will then show excluded backups

Luc,

This is a known requirement that has been submitted and being
prioritized for a future release, i.e. allowing you to "exclude" certain
databases from a command.

Del

Re: Read Only Script

2004-11-30 Thread Lawrence Clark
I don't know ...copies take a long time
If you have a copy pool you can do a select to generate a list and then:
- check them out
-mark them destroyed
- execute a restore stgpool, assuming your copypool volumes are in a library

But below is an outline for what you want to do

a script that assembles something like:
dsmcmd:
dsmadmc -id=admin -pa=password -displaymode=table $1

*-
1). Generate a list of volumes
dsmcmd "select volume_name from volumes where stgpool_name='STGPOOLNAME' AND
access='READONLY'" > SQLTEST}
grep "^[000] " SQLTEST > VOLLIST

OFFSITEVOLS < VOLLIST

2) Use list generated to do copies as in the example below to check them out

3). CHeck them out
{
OFFSITEVOLS ()
while read volname; do
echo "found a vol to checkout: " $volname
/home/root/dsmcmd "CHECKO LIBV $volume "
/home/root/dsmcmd "UPDATE VOL $volume ACC=offsite"
done
}

4) Send email of list copied and checked out.

Del,
can you comment this. You said that we cannot exclude databases in this
release. I never used it, but I think this is what Luc is looking for;
to exclude log backup of master db.

Re: scheduled SQL log backup question

2004-11-30 Thread Del Hoobler
Luc, Steve, Joe,

Yes, this will work, and it will show up as an "excluded" database
in the statistics at the end. There is a similar requirement for
from some customers to remove a database from being "examined" at all.
Data Protection will examine (get status and other details) all databases,
even the ones that are EXCLUDEd in the DSM.OPT file. For example, if there

is a database known to be "down or in standbye" state, it will show up as
an error,
even if it EXCLUDEd. The similar requirement is to allow a way to bypass
even those databases.

The EXCLUDE statements will work for this particular case.
I am sorry if I misinterpreted the question.

Thanks for clearing this up Joe and Steve.

Re: Overflow location

2004-11-30 Thread Steve Harris
Sandra,

There is a section in the Admin Guide on dealing with a full library.

Regards

Steve.

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 01/12/2004 3:27:52 >>>
Dear All,
today i ran into something on :
TSM 5.2.3 on Windows 2000 server.

I have 3582 Library and my sequential storage poool is setup with 9 volumes for
collocation. No as per the policies of various servers' data retention, these
are not enough for this amount of data and my backups fail since none of the
volumes have enough space to carry more data.

I increased the number of scratchs in that pool. but I don't want to run into
same situation when i have to keep volumes in the library for DRM.

Can I checkout volumes that are full and then run audit library or what?

How can I cope with this situation?

Kindly enlighten me !

Kind Regards,
Sandra

Adding TSM instances to MS Cluster environment

2004-11-30 Thread Graham Trigge
Fellow TSMers,

I am setting up TSM 5.2.3 on a two node, W2K active/active cluster (no
shared libraries as all backups are running to disk only). I have
successfully created my first virtual server on both cluster nodes with no
problems. I have successfully created the first half of the second virtual
server with no problems. Creating the second half of the second virtual
server is giving me grief.

On the second cluster node I have run the Initial Configuration wizard to
configure the new virtual server. The server initializes correctly then
runs the Cluster Configuration Wizard. A screen is displayed asking "Do
you want to configure TSM to manage tape failover for this group?" - the
instructions tell me that there is nothing I can do here as the answer is
retrieved from the first virtual server created. Clicking next give me the
following error message:

"The selected autochanger is not on a valid shared SCSI bus with
the selected node".

Looking at the greyed out options the checkbox for "Configure TSM to
manage tape failover" is selected and I can't change it.

Any assistance would be appreciated.
