Re: Tape Technology Comparison
Here's another one. Try this link it may help you. ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/software/tivoli/analystreports/tsm.pdf or http://www-3.ibm.com/software/tivoli/library/analystreports/ As for STK vs 34XX. I've used 3494 for years. A few of the sites I have had have a mixture of 3494 + STK PowderHorns etc.. all with 3590's. All are reliable. Rarely have trouble. Some are more than 6 - 7 years old. ATL's will more than likely outlast your servers and tape drives! Afterall what is there to wear out?? On the drive side, tape access speeds are good. But where we have long tape retention times, read/write speed, and reliablity are all important. On the other hand we also use the TSM API for cutting pieces out of the data stored within TSM so there is a lot of start stop activity. Hence, the 3590, 3590E. Guess it depends on the size you bosses piggy bank :-) Cheers -Original Message- From: Leonard Lauria [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 30 September, 2003 9:30 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Tape Technology Comparison Our experience has been with 9840 (A's) and LTO gen 1 drives. The 9840s have been rock solid for years, while the LTO has had more failures in the past 14 months or so than all of our STK drives over the past 8 or so years. The LTOs started off rough, but I must admit that lately things have stabalized, though we still have some oddities occur (may be SAN backup related). I wouldn't be concerned with the proprietary drives from STK. Our libraries are a STK 4410, STK 9310 (11,000 slots total) and a IBM 3584 single frame. No problems with the robotics in any of them. leonard At 01:09 PM 9/30/2003 +0100, you wrote: >Hello > >Anybody out there able to share their thoughts and experiences? > >We're doing a technology refresh on some of our libraries and have a number >of products in the frame: >IBM 3584 / LTO-2 >ADIC Scalar i2000 / LTO-2 >HP ESL9322 / LTO-2 >StorageTek L700e / T9940B > >The interesting one from my point of view is the L700e with its T9940B >drives. Re: Backupsets on FILE devclasses: Mobile or not?
Allen, The particular client manual will tell you what local device if any is supported for backupset restore. For example my netware backupset restores do not support locally attached devices so have to been done over the network. Of course at the server end the backupset can be on a file device or tape whichever is convenient John [EMAIL PROTECTED] on 10/01/2003 03:59:08 PM Please respond to "Allen S. inc backs up all files after restore
Hello TSMers A question regarding how TSM monitors files that have changed.. On win2000, TSM client 5.1.5.2, we have found that if we lose a drive and have to do a complete restore onto a new disk (but with same windows drive letter), the first time we do a inc backup, everything gets backed up. So what is TSM using to determine that the files have changed ? As you can imagine , when this happens on a 300Gb, 1.2million file drive, the last thing we want is another backup of all the data. a lot of errors since DP for Oracle 5.2 upgrade
Hi *SM-ers! Since the upgrade of 3 of our Data Protection for Oracle clients from 2.2.1 to 5.2 I see a LOT of errors in the activity log like: ANU2602E The object /mount/appl1//c-862102661-20031002-0a was not found on the TSM Server I checked these messages in the TSM log and compared them with the TSM inventory details. >From the TSM activity log: 02-10-2003 10:09:21 ANE4994S (Session: 673547, Node: KL1004XL-ORC) TDP Oracle AIX ANU0599 ANU2602E The object /mount/appl1//c-862102661-20031002-0a was not found on the TSM Server With a select * from backups where node_name='NODE" from the client's inventory on the TSM server: KL1004XL-ORC /mount/appl1 1 ACTIVE_VERSION FILE // c-862102661-20031002-0a 316949736 2003-10-02 10:09:22.00 oracle DEFAULT So the object not found error occurred at 10:09:21 and the object itself was created at 10:09:22! It looks like TSM checks whether the object already exists before creating it. If this is the case, then this is a new feature introduced in the 5.2 DP client. Re: LOG.NSF - backup it up or not?
Bill, We do not back up the log.nsf files either because they are non-critical to the recovery of Lotus Domino. This file is often recreated during maintenance and that file will become either log1.nsf, log2.nsf, etc and placed in the mail2 folder under subfolder logs. It will be considered a redundant backup file. Re: TSM Scheduler not contacting clients
I had that problem and it was a aix tcp tuning issue. Do a netstat -v ent1 | grep "Receive Pool Buffer" where ent1 is the adaptor that your tsm traffic runs on. If your "No Receive Pool Buffer Errors:" line is greater than zero you have the same problem I had. We raised our receive pool buffer size up to 2048 and that fixed our problem. The ethernet adaptor has to be down to change the setting. The command is: chdev -l ent"x" -a rxbuf_pool_size=2048 where x is the adaptor name. Seen these on tdp 2.2.1 also. Most of them (maybe all of them) are for the 'c' type files (e.g. oracle controlfiles). They were once explained as being checked for existance on the tsm server before actually creating them... -Marcel On Thu, Oct 02, 2003 at 01:47:58PM +0200, Loon, E.J. van - SPLXM wrote: > Hi *SM-ers! > Since the upgrade of 3 of our Data Protection for Oracle clients from 2.2.1 > to 5.2 I see a LOT of errors in the activity log like: > > ANU2602E The object /mount/appl00001//c-862102661-20031002-0a was not found > on the TSM Server > > I checked these messages in the TSM log and compared them with the TSM > inventory details. > > >From the TSM activity log: > 02-10-2003 10:09:21 ANE4994S (Session: 673547, Node: KL1004XL-ORC) TDP > Oracle AIX ANU0599 ANU2602E The object > /mount/appl1//c-862102661-20031002-0a was not found on the TSM Server > > With a select * from backups where node_name='NODE" from the client's > inventory on the TSM server: > KL1004XL-ORC /mount/appl1 1 ACTIVE_VERSION FILE // > c-862102661-20031002-0a 316949736 2003-10-02 10:09:22.00 oracle DEFAULT > > So the object not found error occurred at 10:09:21 and the object itself was > created at 10:09:22! > It looks like TSM checks whether the object already exists before creating > it. Re: TSM Scheduler not contacting clients
There was a major bug in Aix 5.1 64 bit mode tcp that caused major slowdowns in backups. It was apar IY36925 fixed in bos.net.tcp.client 5.1.0.37. The receive buffer problem occurred with that fix already in place. Re: TSM v5.2 on AIX
Hi, I have been running 5.2.0.0 on AIX 5.2ML1 for quite a while now (3-4 months) with no significant issues. Everything works well and is very speedy. We decided on 5.2 because we were using fastt products for disk storage and can dynamically increase their size (well it requires a down...so it is loose versions of the word dynamic). I am getting ready to go to 5.2.0.2 (I have been out for a couple of weeks) but have not yet. Most of my clients (ie. Everything but the nt4 and aix 4.3.3 clients) are at 5.2.x.x. Re: TSM and command logging
Jon, Why bother with tee-ing the dsmadmc sessions? I really don't understand what else you need to see in addition to the ANR2017I's. Sure, the tee would give you the output of their commands, but is there any need to see the output of their QUERY ACTLOG, QUERY VOL F=D, UPD VOL ACC=READW, DEL FI, UPD NODE, or whatever? Anyway, the problem isn't with sudo. If you run dsmadmc from a wrapper script without sudo, it fails with the |tee and runs fine without it. It does, however, have something to do with dsmadmc. If you replace dsmadmc with telnet in a test wrapper script, it works. If absolutely necessary, you might be able to resolve the situation by using Expect. All, Thanks for this info. We'll patch our AIX box and report the results. I'm curious about one thing though. If it's an AIX problem, why does shutting down the TSM server (not AIX) and restarting it fix the problem? It was apar IY36925 fixed in bos.net.tcp.client 5.1.0.37. The receive buffer problem occurred with that fix already in place.
