TDP for Oracle 2.2 for NT - orasbt.dll not found

2001-11-14 Thread Werner Baur

Hi,

has anybody succeedeed to get running TDPO 2.2 on Windows NT?

The connections to the TSM-Server (4.1), i.e. tdpoconf showenv works.
But Oracle uses the dummy API instead of the TSM agent (Warning: Oracle
Test Disk API) if I try to allocate a channel of type sbt_tape.
Obviously Oracle cannot find and link the DLL. This scenario is
described in the RMAN user's guide troubleshooting section. The guide
suspects a problem with the system path, but I cannot see any.
orasbt.dll is installed under the sytem directory c:\winnt\system32,
which is in the system path. Maybe I have missed something as I am
neither an experienced NT admin nor an Oracle guru.
Any hints are appreciated!

Werner

So how many objects are being expired?
You do not say if there is a lot more expiration than normal happening.
If Oracle TDP is anything like Lotus Notes TDP you may have huge numbers to be
expired.
So it could be just the amount of work and the power of your machine.
Have you done query occupancy against the Oracle TDP filespaces

What database are you backing up? Currently the TDP agents work with the
LANFree option. We tried getting the BMC for SQL agent working over LANFree
and found out that the current release of the product is not capable
LANFree. We were told conflicting things from BMC on when it would be able
to use BMC with LANFree. We ended up using the TDP For SQL and liked both
the backup and restore we got. I know that prior to V2.2 BMC was more
feature rich but the V2.2 TDP seems to be quite nice. Still, BMC did work

Re: Archives, Storage Pools, and DR

2001-11-14 Thread Salak Juraj

Hi,

basically, the only reason to use different storage pool at all
are d i f f e r e n t requirements for handling the data.
This can be different required degree of redundacy (one, two or three
copies of each file), different storage locations, different
requirements for time to restore, and so on..

If this is true, than you must use separate pools.
If this is not true, you can use single storage pool as well, even
single primary pool.

I tend to use separate pools,
because it leaves me more freedom for the future
at the costs of slightly worse tape usage and more daily tape mounts.

Re: TDP for MSSQL

2001-11-14 Thread Del Hoobler

> Am I remembering this wrong and confusing it with other TDP's (oracle)?
> How does it expire old versions?

Gerald,

You are remembering this correctly.

All objects sent to the TSM backup storage pool by the
SQL Application Client are given a unique name so they
are never expired by the TSM server. The SQL Application Client
provides a delete function to remove unwanted backup objects
from the TSM server. However, the VERDeleted parameter of
the Backup Copy Group should be set to 0 (zero).
When the SQL Application Client marks a backup object
inactive, that object is deleted from the TSM server
the next time expiration processing occurs.
A backup object is marked inactive when you delete it
through the SQL Application Client interface.

The above text was taken from the version 1
TDP for SQL Installation and User's Guide.

A copy of the User's Guide should be in the
(base-dir)\MSSQL\HTM directory. It is called "ab5msmst.htm".
If it is not there, you may have chosen not to
install it... and in this case you can get it from
your original CD.
It is covered in Chapter 3 under a section titled:
"TSM Policy Requirements and Recommendations".

LAN Free (SAN) Backup

2001-11-14 Thread Wouter V

Hello,

I will soon implement my first TSM Server on a SAN network.

The SAN is connected with a MA8000 storage server, 5 NT clients, and 1 Sun
Unix server
Each machine has local disk + san-attached storage and will use TDP for
oracle to make backups
(data on the MA8000).

I read that a backup/archive of regular files is also possible since TSM
4.2.

Now, is it correct that with LAN-Free backup :

- I can't use diskpools (on the SAN), with migration (next storage
pool)
to the tapelibrary, over the SAN ?
- You always make a "direct connection" from the backup client to the
storage device which takes the backup
(tape). So data transfers twice through the SAN-switch ? From the
MA8000 storage server to the client
(storage agent) and then, from the client to the tape library ?
- The maximum number of concurrent clientbackups is limited to the
number
of drives in the library('s) ?
Because we can't use a SAN diskpool as destination the number of
mount
points is limited to the number of
drives ? (disk has unlimited number of mountpoints)
- If I want to do Serverless backup / use SAN diskpools I need Sanergy
?

Can you give me any advices concerning LAN-Free / Serverless backup ?

Thank you for your help.

Re: TDP for oracle and data growth.

2001-11-14 Thread Matthew Large

Hi Finn,

TDP for ORACLE for UNIX (and probably windows) states that all the files
generated have unique names. further down (pg 35/36) it states VERED and
RETO must be set to zero, and that the frequency, verexists, retextra, mode
and serialisation parameters are completely ignored.

You must remove them manually using the RMAN script. And ensure the node
setting for backdelete=yes on the server. look in the manual for more
detailed instructions.

hope this helps!

Hi TSM specialists,

We have encountered a problem with a server that uses TDP for oracle.
One of our server now has a total of about 9 TB of data on our tape pool !!!
What we found out is that this is caused by the fact that everytime TDP
sents data to our TSM server it gives the "file" a new name so all versions
are still active and growing !! growing !! growing !!
Which is OK for the bill we send to the customer but not really a desirable
situation.

Any idea's on how to delete the data or how to prevent this from happening?

LAN Free (SAN) Backup

2001-11-14 Thread Linda Seeba

I just implemented LanFree backups across a SAN for Solaris. I have one
Solaris client , a Solaris TSM server, and an IBM 3583 LTO tape library all
connected to a SAN. We are not using a TDP yet but are backing up all files
LanFree directly to tape.

You cannot have a disk storage pool defined at all in the domain you are
using for LanFree backups.

The backup will go directly to tape unless there is a problem with the SAN
then it will go to the TSM server across the LAN.

Your mount points cannot exceed your defined tape drives.

The documentation states to use disk storage you can use SanEnergy but we
haven't looked at this.

The only problem we have had is storage agent sessions that start every
couple of hours and hang up on the TSM server. So far it seems they do not
time out. We have been cancelling them and are working with TSM support to
fix this problem.

Re: AIX and LTO 3583

2001-11-14 Thread Daniel Sparrman

Hi Katherine

As it sounds, you have the optional 12 slot I/O station. Is this correct?

In that case, you should do the checkin with the parameter "search=bulk".

If not, TSM will assume that you don't have the I/O station, which means
that you only have a 1-slot I/O station.

And, if the tapes hasn't been expired in the library, you first have to
check in the tapes with status=private. This is because Tivoli has to
expire the tapes when they are in the library. TSM also sets the status to
scratch automatically when it expires the tapes.

But, the tapes has to be in the library for TSM to expire them and make
them scratch volumes.

If you do a q vol you should see your expired copypool volumes as status
empty. This is because TSM hasn't had the chance to make them scratch
volumes.

Re: TDS v2.1.1 installation

2001-11-14 Thread David McClelland

Hi Finn,

If you've installed from the flat TDS CD's you won't find the TDS for SMA
(Storage Management Analysis) bits (i.e. guides) on there - you'll need a
separate CD, which will have the Decision Support Loader (a special
application which pulls data from the TSM servers' databases and populates
an RDBMS) and sql schema's to build the tables into the database.

I did install this and had it working last year (memory's a bit sketchy
now, but I recall it was a bit of a faff), getting all kinds of stats from
our TSM servers, but I think that the packaging has now changed. In our
latest CD bundle from Tivoli we got a 'Tivoli Storage Resource Reporting'
CD which I believe may contain what you are looking for... It may be worth
looking at service.boulder.ibm.com ftp site too as I remember there to be
some folders on there which may have what you're looking for... There's
also some Redbooks - Tivoli Storage Manager Reporting - SG24-6109-00, and
lots of installation documentation on the CD.

Hope this helps,

Re: LAN Free (SAN) Backup

2001-11-14 Thread Daniel Sparrman

Hi Linda

To backup your data to a SAN-attached disk device is possible.

All you have to do is to create a shared FILE-device, and then instead of
backing up to tape, backup to the FILE device.

According to Tivoli, this is a supported configuration, and the information
can be found on the Tivoli website.

I just implemented LanFree backups across a SAN for Solaris. I have one
Solaris client , a Solaris TSM server, and an IBM 3583 LTO tape library all
connected to a SAN. We are not using a TDP yet but are backing up all files
LanFree directly to tape.

You cannot have a disk storage pool defined at all in the domain you are
using for LanFree backups.

Hi,

has anybody succeedeed to get running TDPO 2.2 on Windows NT?

Re: Archives, Storage Pools, and DR

2001-11-14 Thread Kauffman, Tom

Tim --

This should be driven by your D/R requirements.

We have two MS-Exchange servers and a fax server that need to come up fast,
as well as a 600 GB SAP/Oracle instance on R/S 6000. We do *not* do bare
metal restores. As a result, I have:

1) A copy pool for SAP database backups (two tapes per backup)
2) A co-located copy pool for MS-Exchange
3) Two copy pools for SAP/Oracle redo logs (If one tape is unreadable, we've
got the other)
4) A copy pool for AIX/NT incrementals (backups, in other words)
5) A copy pool for long-term SAP Archives from commonstore (to keep them out
of the way)

On a 'normal' D/R (tests, so far), we get mksysb restores running on all the
R/S 6000 systems (six) and start installing NT from CD on the three NT
servers. About the time the TSM server has been recovered the NT systems are
ready to start restoring. About 45 minutes later, we're ready to start
recovering the non-database SAP files from one of the redo log tapes (I
archive this every week); three filesystems use the archive as a base for
point-in-time restores from the incremental tape.

As soon as we have the code down, we start the SAP database restore. While
it's running, we recover all the off-line redo logs to roll forward.
Somewhere in here we recover two oracle databases used by our in-house
labor/payroll and edi processing -- these archive nightly and end up on the
redo log tapes as well.

Our published requirements are to recover to a state that existed not more
than 12 hours before an outage, and to do it within 48 hours of the
occurrance of the outage. And we're trying to cut that 12-hour window down
to 3 hours.

So - determine what you need to recover, how it is to be recovered, and how
long you have to do it. From there you can work out the copy pool (and
original storage pool) requirements and the D/R site hardware requirements.
Don't forget that you also need to get the TSM database off-site, as well as
the device config and volume history files (I put these on floppy and strap
it to the TSM database backup tape).

Katherine,

Your slot 16 should be the slot where the tapes are taken out. You
should have an empty slot where the tapes come in and out. That would be
stated as slot 16. Once you run the checkin command insert the tape there
and then reply to the question.

Also, are you looking for a way to view the messages from the command line
through AIX?

Help! I am feeling quite dumb here, have searched the archives and read
the manuals all to no avail. It's probably just me ...

I have an IBM LTO 3583 library. I have successfully inserted tapes and

was going well. Recently I decided that it was time to use the library as
it was intended. Using DRM I
decided I should remove COPY tapes and DB Backup Tapes etc. and keep them
in my "vault". That was
easy. Now however I would like to put back in some of the tapes that have

We have one column in the library to hold tapes and one I/O port. I can
add new scratch tapes with label

used and expired tapes back in.

I have tried the checking libvolume x scratch=yes. I am prompted
(through the actlog) to insert the tape in slot 16. Here is my problem.
Which slot is 16? I have tried a couple of different ones and get

Hi,

i need to restore files to a different tsm-node ,than the data has
been backed up with.
Using the gui, there is the option "logon", where I can specify
the concerned "source-tsm-node" and my administrative TSM-ID,
for authenticating with/to the tsm-server. I have to use my ID because
of the "passwordaccess generate"-setting in the client-options-file, so
I do not know the passwords of the client-nodes. Using this way,
everything works fine.
The question is: How can I initiate this login-process using
the command-line I would like to simplify this process
for backup-operators, so that it is only necessary to enter
the administrative TSM-ID and password. The node-name
should have been set using a dsm.exe - paramater.
i.e.: dsm -loginid=userid -virtualnodename=sourcemachine

Is there an "undocumented feature" that solves my problem?
(or is it documented and I haven't found it?)

Thanks in advance!

But then you need Sanergy I believe + you can only backup with one client at
a time to the shared file space .
So client 1 mounts the San-diskspace, makes it backup, unmounts
Client 2 mounts the san-diskspace (fused), makes it backup, unmount and so
on...

Tell me if I'm wrong.

Re: Restoring to different node using administrative TSM-ID

2001-11-14 Thread Yanki Yuksel

Couple options include the following:

1. You can actually map a network drive on the original node to the new
node you want to restore to. Then during the restore, you can pick a
location and select the mapped drive.

2. You can go to the new node you want to restore to, and in the dsm.opt
file you can change the node name to that of the old one, this way, when
the GUI starts up, it will think that it is the original node. Mind you,
you will still need to pick a different location to restore to unless you
have the drives partitioned off exactly the same.

Hope this helps,

Subject: Restoring to different node using administrative TSM-ID

Hi,

i need to restore files to a different tsm-node ,than the data has
been backed up with.

I just implemented LanFree backups across a SAN for Solaris. I have one
Solaris client , a Solaris TSM server, and an IBM 3583 LTO tape library all
connected to a SAN. We are not using a TDP yet but are backing up all files
LanFree directly to tape.

You cannot have a disk storage pool defined at all in the domain you are
using for LanFree backups.

Help! I am feeling quite dumb here, have searched the archives and read
the manuals all to no avail. It's probably just me ...

I have an IBM LTO 3583 library. I have successfully inserted tapes and
begun backing up with TSM. All
was going well. Recently I decided that it was time to use the library as
it was intended. Using DRM I
decided I should remove COPY tapes and DB Backup Tapes etc. and keep them
in my "vault". That was
easy. Now however I would like to put back in some of the tapes that have
expired. Here is where I am
having trouble.

We have one column in the library to hold tapes and one I/O port. I can
add new scratch tapes with label
libvolume ... checkin=scratch ..but I can not seem to get those old
used and expired tapes back in.

I have tried the checking libvolume x scratch=yes. I am prompted
(through the actlog) to insert the tape in slot 16. Here is my problem.
Which slot is 16? I have tried a couple of different ones and get

Two things that come to mind is the disk pool filling, and files that
exceed the maxsize setting on the disk storage pool (q stg poolname f=d).

A third would be binding file to a Management class that backs up directly
to tape, bypassing the disk pool.

Re: LAN Free (SAN) Backup

Hi

Doesn't that depend of the setting of "Mount limit" that you set on you
shared FILE deviceclass?

There shouldn't be a problem having multiple clients mount multiple mount
points, as long as you have the mount limit to a number higher than
the number of clients.

I am well aware of that in 3.7.X and 4.1.X, you needed SANergy to use a
diskpool. But this should have been solved in 4.2, where Tivoli integrated
parts of SANergy into TSM.

This is how I have been explained to by Tivoli's support.

But then you need Sanergy I believe + you can only backup with one client

So client 1 mounts the San-diskspace, makes it backup, unmounts
Client 2 mounts the san-diskspace (fused), makes it backup, unmount and so
on...

Tell me if I'm wrong.

Hmmm, this seems to be an open question for many of us.

What I don't understand is how TSM can manage to make a SAN-attached disk
device available (for storage pool backup) at the same time for multiple
clients ? When a disk is assigned to one host, how is it possible to assign
it also to another host ? "Switching the storage between hosts seems
feasible", but concurrent ?

Yep. I've done audit on EVERY volume in the library. More than once.

Also, since the primary pool is collocated and the offsite pool is not, it
is frequently impossible to tell WHICH primary volume needs to be restored.

You see the error on the reclaim of the copy pool tapes; since we normally
hit many tapes in a reclaim cycle, you find these errors in the log and
can't really tell which primary pool tape is the culprit.

And when I can tell, the RESTORE VOLUME doesn't always fix it, and I end up
deleting the remainin few files on teh copy pool tape, on the assumption
that TSM will pick them up again the next time a do BACKUP STGPOOL.

So far, I"m baffled.

I see maybe 50 files a week with this error, while millions have gone
through reclaim. And it's only the copy pool tapes that seem to have a
problem, so I haven't been scared enough by it yet to shut down and audit
the DB. I"m thinking of doing that over the New Year holiday.

Have you done 'audit volume fix=yes'? If these errors occur
during offsite reclaim, then the problem is on the primary tapes.

I have had problems like this a long time ago, nothing recent (knock on
wood).
I would do a move data on the primary volume until it quit with
the error, then audit the volume, fix=yes, then do move data again
until only bad files were on the tape, then do a restore volume.

I never, ever had to do a discarddata on a primary volume, restore
volume has always worked.

Actually from SAN disk to TSM client, then from TSM client to SAN Tape (or
disk with SANergy) storage - twice across the SAN. Some variety of
Serverless backup is promised in TSM 5.x next year.

- I can't use diskpools (on the SAN), with migration (next
storage pool)
to the tapelibrary, over the SAN ?
- You always make a "direct connection" from the backup
client to the
storage device which takes the backup
(tape). So data transfers twice through the SAN-switch ?
>From the
MA8000 storage server to the client
(storage agent) and then, from the client to the tape
library ?
- The maximum number of concurrent clientbackups is limited
to the number
of drives in the library('s) ?
Because we can't use a SAN diskpool as destination the
number of mount
points is limited to the number of
drives ? (disk has unlimited number of mountpoints)
- If I want to do Serverless backup / use SAN diskpools I
need Sanergy ?

Can you give me any advices concerning LAN-Free / Serverless backup ?

Thank you for your help.

Re: backup disk pool vs backup tape pool

2001-11-14 Thread Tomas Hrouda

Hi Marc,

try to check high migration percent (HMP) of diskool, maybe it's too high -
large files comes over directly to tape when diskpool is near to fullfilling
without starting migration of diskpool - then backup time of your tape pool
grow because of that "bypasing files" are not backed up from diskpool like
others. Note, that is not good set HMP to near to 100% or 100% between
planed migrations because of previous mentioned.

What would cause this? Why would data go directly to the backup tape pool,

Need to move old/misdirected backups of a filespace from one tape storage pool to another

2001-11-14 Thread Kent Monthei

A node has been misdirecting a huge amount of data into our on-site
TAPEPOOL because of missing management class bindings in an inclexcl file
(several missing 'include ' statements).
Several of the node's filespaces should have been backed up directly to
another tape storage pool that goes off-site daily. Instead, they now
occupy a lot of TAPEPOOL tapes/slots in an already-crowded tape library.

We corrected the management class bindings, ran a backup, and confirmed the
new backups are now going to the proper storage pool. However, we also
confirmed that all the old backups still occupy tapes/slots in the tape
library's TAPEPOOL.

Is there a way to move old filespace backups out of TAPEPOOL and & merge
them into another storage pool ? This applies to a subset of filespaces
for 1 node.

I vaguely recall someone suggesting this (or a very similar) procedure:
 1) identify volumes containing data for the node/filespace
 2) define a diskpool whose migration destination is the correct
tapepool
 2) use MOVE DATA to move the content of those volumes back to that
diskpool
 3) use MIGRATION to move all the data to the correct destination
pool(s).

Will this work? Does it presume or rely upon collocation by node or by
filespace? What happens to any data on those volumes from other filespaces
or other nodes? Will existing/undesired content presently in COPYPOOL be
removed immediately?

I emphasize that the backups are valid, just in the wrong pool, and need to
be preserved. Duplication to COPYPOOL was never intended and we'd like to
ensure both the TAPEPOOL and COPYPOOL content for these filespaces is
removed.

How to rename a primary pool used by TDP for Oracle?

2001-11-14 Thread Thiha Than

hi,

trying to

>variable DSMO_FS accordingly. TDP generates the following error:

>ANR0520W Transaction failed for session 34535 for node
>FFM0XAB0_ORA (TDP Oracle AIX) - storage pool ADSMORC is
>not defined.

>Oracle is 8.0.6,
>AIX is 4.3.3
>TSM Server is 4.1.4
>TDP for Oracle Backup on AIX is 2.1.10

Storage pool and DSMO_FS are two different things. Storage pool is where
your data is physically backed up to. DSMO_FS is just a logical file
system name that TDPO backups are saved under. Your problem is that the
management class your TDPO node is bound to is pointing to a a storage
pool that doesn't exist. Apparently, the management class is still using
the old storage pool name adsmorc. From admin command line issue "q copy
active * f=d" and look for "Copy Destination" value.
Make sure that it is pointing to the correct storage pool value.

The following is description of ANR0520W.

ANR0520W
Transaction failed for session session number for node node name (client platform) -
storage pool pool name is not defined.

Explanation: The server rolls back a database update transaction for the specified
session because the destination specified for a management class copy
group specifies the named storage pool, but that storage pool does not
exist.
System Action: Server operation continues.
User Response: An administrator with policy authority over the client policy domain
must
correct management class definitions so that copy group destinations refer
to defined storage pools, or the specified storage pool must be created by
an authorized administrator.

Gerald,

Exchange version 1 works like SQL version 1, in that respect.

All objects inserted into the TSM backup storage pool by
the Exchange Application Client are given a unique name
so they are never expired by the TSM server. The Exchange
Application Client provides a delete function to remove
unwanted backup objects from the TSM server. However, for
the function to work, the VERDELETED parameter of the
Backup Copy Group should be set to 0 (zero). Then, when
the Exchange Application Client marks a backup object inactive,
that object is deleted from the TSM server the next
time expiration processing occurs. A backup object is
marked inactive when you delete it through the
Exchange Application Client interface.

The above text was taken from the version 1
TDP for Exchange Installation and User's Guide.

Thanks,

Del

But that won't get rid of the COPYPOOL copies, will it? Relocating the
primary copy of backups from one primary pool to another doesn't affect the
copies already in the copy pool.

What about this:

1) EXPORT the node, by filespace if you want, specify FILEDATA=YES.
2) DELETE the filespaces. That eliminates both the primary copy and the
COPYPOOL copies. Careful to specify TYPE so that you delete only the BACKUP
data if these nodes also have archive data.
3) IMPORT the node again, specify a DOMAIN with all the same management
classes as the original, but all pointing to the proper pool.

Will that do it?

Wanda,

Yes, that will, with the exception that if archives are retained after the
export, they will "lock" the filespace name. I am going through such a
evolution right now, and that is what happened with a node whose backup
data was exported, deleted, and imported; but whose archive data was never
touched. I ended up with a "\d$" and a "\d1" both of which contain real

occupy a lot of TAPEPOOL tapes/slots in an already-crowded tape library.

Duplication to COPYPOOL was never intended and we'd like to
ensure both the TAPEPOOL and COPYPOOL content for these filespaces is
removed.

Wanda,

Yes, that will, with the exception that if archives are retained after the
export, they will "lock" the filespace name. I am going through such a
evolution right now, and that is what happened with a node whose backup
data was exported, deleted, and imported; but whose archive data was never
touched. I ended up with a "\d$" and a "\d1" both of which contain real
data.

Careful to specify TYPE so that you delete only the
BACKUP
data if these nodes also have archive data.
3) IMPORT the node again, specify a DOMAIN with all the same management
classes as the original, but all pointing to the proper pool.

Will that do it?

Kent,

Yes that works to the extent that client data is collocated on the tapes.
If there is another client's data on that tape, that client's data will
move
too.

A node has been misdirecting a huge amount of data into our on-site

Does Tivoli analyze of root cause this problem for ANY of its customers? Or
did they just reboot the UNIX systems or bounce the ADSM application?

One root cause is the ADSM/TSM server not being able to recover from the

I have experienced that before.

What I found out was, I had 2 lmcpd daemons running.

No library communication from TSM, I could see the Library from AIX.

got confused and hung itself)

That does not seem to be the case for you unless you shutdown the

When it came back up it started fresh daemons ??

I killed te daemon processes, then halted TSM and brought it back

Worked for me.

Actually from SAN disk to TSM client, then from TSM client to SAN Tape (or
disk with SANergy) storage - twice across the SAN. Some variety of
Serverless backup is promised in TSM 5.x next year.

2001-11-14 Thread Gabriel Wiley

Kelly,
I feel the same way here is a script to help you out:

LSTDRMVOL
select volume_name, pct_utilized,stgpool_name,status from volumes where
devclass_name like '%3590%' and volume_name in (select volume_name from
drmedia where state='MOUNTABLE') order by stgpool_name,pct_utilized

^ Shows the % utilized so I can pick which ones I want to eject, this does
not show the DBbackups, cause I have yet to add that piece in.

I also use this script :

LSTDISRVOL

select volume_name as DISR_VOLUMES from drmedia where state='MOUNTABLE'

I run the first one then run the second one and deduce the 'Filling'
volumes from the first script and that's my list.

Hope it helps~

Yes, I figured out you can do this with EXPORT judicious use of

FILESPACE-X from UserA to UserB.
Rename UserB to UserHold. Rename UserA to UserB.
Export FILESPACE-X . Rename UserA back to itself from B
Rename UserHold back to UserB
Import FILESPACE-X.

LP8000 + Emulex driver + AIX 4.3 : it works !

2001-11-14 Thread ORNESS

Hi TSMers,

just some hints for those (like me) who are (were) hesisating between LP8000
and IBM 622x ?

Except for the price side, LP8000s come with their own non-IBM drivers...
I had some difficulties to make them work...

LP8000 and 622x are belongs to the same family.

LP6000/LP7000 is recognized under AIX as devices.pci.df1000f7 (f700)
LP8000 is recognized under AIX as devices.pci.df1000f8 (f800) (Emulex
jumper set)
LP8000 is recognized under BULL AIX as devices.pci.df1001f8 (f801) (bull
jumper set)
LP900x is recognized under AIX as devices.pci.df1000f9

IBM supports (they told me) the LP8000 but there is not the least driver
called .df1000f8
you can only find ...f7 and ...f9 ones.

Here is my experience (many thanx again to my STK support guy !)

- remove all fc drivers (including IBM.common.fc)
- install devices.pci.lpfc.* stuff

- if you are in a point-to-point connection (LP8000 - fibre - T9840), leave
the ODM value 'topology'
set to 4
- if you are in a switched fabric (LP8000 - fibre - StorageNet 41xx -
fibre - T9840), change the ODM value 'topology'
set to 2
- reboot

- manually create your TSM mtX device(s) with the mkdev command..

However, I still have TWO pbs :
-
1) I can not see any drive through the SAN, my switch is well configured,
all my ports are F_ports.
I filled the /etc/lpfc.conf with the WWW of my drives associated to the
desired target by neither
a cfgmgr nor a reboot change anything.

Can someone send me his /etc/lpfc.conf

2) As direct conection uses a LOOP protocol, if I change something on your
lpfcX driver of rmtX drive
(for instance, block_size), I'm not able to make the device available again
with a 'mkdev -l lpfcX'

I must reboot !

Thanx for your help

TDP for Exchange Problem

2001-11-14 Thread Gerald Wichmann

We have an Exchange server running TDP v1.1.1. It's been backing up for
a year or so and someone noticed it has somewhere around 2.9TB of data
backed up. This shouldn't be because as far as we know it was set up to
only store 30 days with one 10GB Full done per day, and 4 60MB
incrementals done each day during the day. If you do the math that
should be around 10GB * 30 days = 300GB for the fulls.. and less for the
increments.. nowhere near 3TB..

In loading the GUI, the individual only sees 30 days of backups backed
up. So by the GUI it appears as though it's working correctly.

The two pieces don't mesh and my suspicion is that old backups aren't
being expired but I'm not sure how to verify that. Could someone tell me
what the best way would be to determine what is going on here? I
suggested looking for the log files and looking in there. But in the
meantime I also wanted to shoot off this email in hopes there was
another way to look into this problem. Perhaps some command line
commands I could try.

I thought aobut doing a "q backup -subdir=yes "C:\*"" but wasn't sure if
that would yield anything since exchange TDP backups probably don't go
under C:\

Anyways any help greatly appreciated. Unfortunately I don't have any
documents for v1.1 on me and tivoli's site lacks them too. Plus I'm
trying to troubleshoot this problem 2nd hand instead of being on the box
itself.

Re: Antwort: Re: ANR9999D with a strange message

2001-11-14 Thread BURDEN,Anthony

I have been sort of following this thread,

This is not a very technical description, and my understanding of your
problem.

A: you restored your DB.
B: you audited your on-site tapes with the fix option
C: you try to reclaim the off-site tapes and you get "magic numbers"

What I have seen on my site is that once I have restored the DB to a
point in time some of the data held in the stgpools; both disk and tape
is unknown to TSM. You receive a magic number on a tape when TSM runs
across this data either reading or writing, you are correct in saying an
audit/fix on the tape should solve this issue, but it does sound like
the next option for you to try is an audit/fix on the database.
Depending on the size it should be completed in 24hrs.

Also you mention that this is happening when you try to reclaim the
copypool tapes, what is happening when you reclaim or move tapepool
tapes.

Also when you try to restore a volume, have you looked at restoring the
stgpool with the view only option to see what that thinks of your
current state.

I never have the time to run audit/fix on my tapes pools, I have to many
tapes, so normally I run it on the tapes as the error appears.

Anyway not much help I know. My servers are TSM 4.1.4.1 on NT2000 and
NT4.0 using STK9710 silo's.

Anthony.

Hi Wanda,

This sounds like one for support.
I don't know what your server version is, but is at a level which
supports the
command
SET CONTEXTMESSAGING ON
This is supposed to give you a bit more background detail to the
ANRD

Yep. I've done audit on EVERY volume in the library. More than once.

Also, since the primary pool is collocated and the offsite pool is not,
it
is frequently impossible to tell WHICH primary volume needs to be
restored.

You see the error on the reclaim of the copy pool tapes; since we
normally
hit many tapes in a reclaim cycle, you find these errors in the log and
can't really tell which primary pool tape is the culprit.

And when I can tell, the RESTORE VOLUME doesn't always fix it, and I end
up
deleting the remainin few files on teh copy pool tape, on the assumption
that TSM will pick them up again the next time a do BACKUP STGPOOL.

So far, I"m baffled.

I see maybe 50 files a week with this error, while millions have gone
through reclaim. And it's only the copy pool tapes that seem to have a
problem, so I haven't been scared enough by it yet to shut down and
audit

Re: file name length error

2001-11-14 Thread BURDEN,Anthony

I hope this might help.

After reading Andy's last reply I did some searching (thanks Andy for
your nice reply to my last statement that I made which was wrong on my
part).I found that I was out of date on this info. I run TSM client
versions 3.1.08 and TSM 4.1.12, both of these clients continue to backup
data when a long file name is found, but I got confused because the
3.1.08 client did not handle a directory + filename longer then 259
characters, where with the version you are running and the Ver 4 client
I am running the directory + filename length is as follows.. But you
must run with USEUNICODEFILENAMES YES, unless you have Mac volumes!!

The maximum length of the file name itself (not including the directory
in which it resides), is 255 characters.
The maximum length of the directory path in which the file resides (not
including the file itself) can not exceed 1,024 characters. The maximum
length of any component within a directory path can not exceed 255
characters "Component" refers to a part of a structure as delimited by
the backslash \ character.
To illustrate: Given a path of the form x:\comp1\comp2\comp3\
Each component "compx" can not exceed 255
255 characters in length. Likewise, "filename" can
not exceed 255 characters in length. In addition,
the "x:\comp1\comp2\comp3" can not exceed 1,024 these limits are not
supported.

Subject: file name length error

Here is the error I am seeing in my TSM error log for a Win2000 client
running 4.1.3 to a Win2000 server running TSM server 4.1.4.1

11/14/2001 02:51:33 ANS1228E Sending of object

too long
11/14/2001 02:51:35 ANS1512E Scheduled event 'DATA01' failed. Return
code = 4.

What is the maximum file length name that is supported in TSM? Also,
according to the messages book, this file should get skipped and the
backup
should continue...however my
backup failed.

Has anyone seen this?

Re: Bad Performance in a SAN Environment

2001-11-14 Thread Orville Lantto

Your performance is on the low side, but not to far off what Tivoli says is
normal for backups of your type with an LTO. You have "small" files,
averaging just over 0.5 MB. TSM cannot process small files fast enough to
keep the LTO streaming. The tape drive has to stop, back hitch and index
forward to begin writing once data is again available. LTOs (and DLTs) are
absolutely awful at this.

Look for my posting 10/8 on this list for my experience. The title was
"LTOs and TSM, the Real Scoop".
