How does Import process work ?

2000-12-22 Thread Ruddy STOUDER

Hello,

If I export all my data from my old server and old library to my new
library (both libraries being connected to my old server) and that
afterwards, I connect this new library to my new TSM server, what are
the necessary steps before starting the import command.

Do I have to checkin the tapes containing the exported data. How ? with
scratch status, with private status ?

Do an import command need to have the tapes defined in the Volhist or
libvol via a checkin command ?

Many thanks in advance for your help,

Re: How does Import process work ?

2000-12-22 Thread Kenneth & Susan Bury

First, if the tape drives are the same in the two libraries, I would simply
update the existing devclass to point to the new library. If I remember
right then it is simply a matter of checking the tapes into the new library.
If a tape contains TSM data it is always private.
Second, I would consider 'moving' the data. Start by reconnecting your pools
to the new library to make sure all the new data is going to the new
library. Once you are happy that it is working properly, start moving the
data from tape volumes.
Third, read over the import and export functions very carefully. I'm not
sure if the import/export function is really what you want to use to migrate
your data to the new library.

Ruddy - Perform a Checkin as Private to make the tapes known to
the server that is to use them for Import.
It would probably be wise to flick the read/write tab on the tape
to read-only before inserting into the new library, as you'll
want to assure that this vital data is not obliterated until
you're sure that the new TSM system is complete and stable.

I'm not a s sharp on bat files as I used to be, so the syntax might be a little

create an arbitrary file on all drives. Say imhere.txt

Just do it up to the highest drive letter you've got. I'm not sure if the "if
exist" will work with just the drive letter either.

In fact, I want to replace library AND server, that's why I want to use

1) I want to export the old server data from the old library to the new

2) I connect the new library containing the exported data to the new

How can I ask the new server to import the data contained on tapes he

variables to set, and did you logout/login after setting them? (Maybe even
recycle the machine) Does that DLL exist? Is it in the right place? How
about copying it to (sorry, no Y2K experience yet) c:\winnt\system32? Of
if it's there, the TSM Server install directory? Is the file really there
(not with a size of 0)?

Disaster Recovery

2000-12-22 Thread Shekhar Dhotre

Hi all ,
Completed Disaster Recovery Test successfully at Sungurad Philadelphia
yesterday.
i was going through following steps , and encountered some problems ,
I restored TSM database and log
updated all tapepool volumes as destroyed ,

loaded all copypool volumes in STk9710 , after this when i started restoring
oracle database
in actlog TSM was asking to checkin volumes A1234 . this process was so
time consuming ,
if one has 100 copypool tapes , do they need to checkin first ? can`t TSM
checkin them as private ?
even if i am using DRM module , lot of steps i was doing manually , DRM scripts
only helps you to
1 format log and DB volumes , restore database , register license ,
but did not update any volumes as destroyed .. neither checkin process
Anyhow i started at 8.00 .AM and finished by 3:00 AM .. was using 10 DLT
drives
in STK9710 . out of 2 gone bad after sometime : -)
Thanks to Chris Wikham , as her tips were useful , like STK Library Microcode
ver .
Hotline phone Nos. (Without this ACSLS was not working ).
thanks everybody who provided inputs for the same.

There is a db2 utility like "db2adutl" that it's useful to delete the backup
object in TSM database
it's located in /db2home/sqllib/adsm. and it's possible to specify
"timestamp" of the objects in order to delete only one
or "older" than this timestamp in order to mantain only 5 copies of
db2backup

It's better to issue a simple query in your TSM db first:

1 su - "db2_user"

2 db2adutl query db "db_name"

3 db2adutl delete full older "timestamp" db "db_name"
after this command those object are deactivated and TSM policies are
responsible to delete it

4 it's possible to delete also your logs with db2adutl but I don't remember
the right sintax.

Take care

Re: Disaster Recovery

2000-12-22 Thread Kauffman, Tom

My quick and dirty approach to the tape checkin issue --

1) mark all tapes in the old library (back home) as 'unavailable'. I do this
by storage pool - "upd vol * acce=unav wherestg=aix-cart" (I have 10 storage
pools I do this for).

2) mark all off-site tapes as read-only. "upd vol * acce=reado whereacce=of"

We currently run a 'manual' library at D/R, so this is all that is required.
If you have a true automated library, follow up with a 'checkin libv
 search=yes stat=pri checklabel=barcode". And then, after the
assorted restores are going, worry about setting up scratch tapes, admin
schedules, and such like (I tend to blow away all schedules as soon as I get
ADSM up, and then add them back in when I'm ready for them).

No. You can take your db backup and build another server that looks like
the old one. Then that server will know about the copy pool tapes. You
can't tell one server about another's tape volumes.

Re: 3583 Library and Win2000 : Mayday, mayday ...

2000-12-22 Thread Mike Collins

Hi Ruddy,

It does sound like the server cannot find the dll for some reason. By
default it should exist in the TSM server directory as:

  c:\program files\tivoli\tsm\server\adsmrsmd.dll

Recommend that you go into the server directory and issue:

  dir adsmrsm*.dll

You should see both

  adsmrsm.dll
  adsmrsmd.dll

If you only see one of these you should delete it and then re-run setup and
choose repair.
If you don't see either of them then re-run setup and choose repair.

If you right click on these in explorer and look at the properties version
tab you should see either

  4.1.2.17 (latest_service) or 4.1.2.1026 (nls fixtest 1)

If not, delete the dlls and then re-run setup and choose repair.

Note that the repair will key off of the existence of adsmrsm.dll - if it's
not there when you do a repair then setup will replace both dlls for you.

If you do see them, ensure the server is not running as a service and run
dsmserv.exe from the server directory and re-issue the define library
command.

If you still see the problem and haven't done a repair then I'd recommend
deleting both dlls and re-run setup and choose repair. This will ensure
that you have good copies.

Please reply if there are still problems after doing this.

Hi:
Despite having these entries in the dsm.opt TSM does not purge older entries in the
dsmerror.log & dsmsched.log in the 4.1.1 client. Anyone else seen this?

SCHEDLOGNAME "C:\WIN32APP\IBM\ADSM\baclient\dsmsched.log"
ERRORLOGNAME "C:\WIN32APP\IBM\ADSM\baclient\dsmserror.log"
SCHEDLOGRETENTION 7
ERRORLOGRETENTION 7

Re: RESTART CLIENTS SERVER

Larry,

Try putting on the default D on the lines:

SCHEDLOGRETENTION 7 D
ERRORLOGRETENTION 7 D

There was an earlier client version (2.x) that didn't know the default, and
it may do the trick for you here.

Re: Server stanza?

>Server stanza?

http://people.bu.edu/rbs/ADSM.QuickFacts explains a lot of terms,
and in this case:

Server stanza A portion of the Client System Options
file, typically starting with the
keyword "Servername", which governs
communicating with that one server.
An ADSM client may communicate with more
than one server, and thus can have
multiple server stanzas within the file.
The server with which the client usually
interacts will be coded on the
DEFAULTserver line, in the section of
the file which precedes the server
stanzas.
(Note that the "server names" in this
file are just arbitrary names for the
stanzas, though they are typically the
actual names of the servers. It is the
TCPServeraddress which actually
identifies the server to communicate
with.)
