TDP for ORACLE on Solaris...

2000-12-04 Thread Bruce Mitchell

Has anyone seen the following using RMAN, (and is there a way to cure it ??) : -

12/02/00 23:00:09 ANE4990I (Session: 23879, Node: GDPORA) (8440):
  12/02/2000:23:00:09 =>(gdpora) queryObj():  ANS1302E
(RC2)No objects on server match query

This is not stopping RMAN from processing backups as requested. I just wondered
whether anyone else had come across it. The TSM server
actlog seems to be full of it and the sbtio.log on the client. I've asked the DBA
to switch on RMAN tracing for more infornation.

Version of TDP API dosent seem revevant as we get it in TDP ORACLE V.1.1.0 and V2.1.9,
the old aob agent.

Thanks as usual, to all who responded. It turned out the DBA recycled the DB and all
problems cleared up. He must have read that it was required after I pointed him to the
TSM/RMAN documentation.

Thanks again,

I seem to remember that upon upgrading the client code from 3.1 to 3.7, that the

Hi James -

I just got done updating all of my oracle clients to TDP and we had this
same problem on 2 clients and it was the cause of 2 different issues.

On 1 client, the database needed to be relinked with the libobk.a.
On the other client, for some reason, we had lost the maxnum mount points
and therefore, had to reset it by using "update maxnummp=

All of my upgrades were 8.05, 8.06, 8.1.5, and 8.1.6 clients - everything
went find, except for the 2 issues above.

Also, have the oracle dba's make sure that all their scripts are pointing to
the right directory if this is a change from IBM's to Tivoli's. We had some
problems with our first upgrade due to misdirection in the scripts that were
missed.

Can anyone help with the error messages I'm grtiing from my oracle dba's

ORA-19506: failed to create sequential file,
name="HRMP11292000HRMP.270.1.bkp", parms=""

ORA-27006: sbtremove returned error

Additional information: 4110

Additional information: 1

I had the dba open this as a problem to Oracle and this was their response:

***

These types of errors deal with linking problems of the MML.

Circulation: PUBLISHED (EXTERNAL)

Folder: server.Rdbms.Recovery.RMan

Topic: Reference Articles

Title: ORA-19506: FAILED TO CREATE SEQUENTIAL FILE, USING ADSM TO BACKUP TO
TAPE.

A search on metalink will retrieve some bulletins on some well known linking
issues with various MML providers (Veritas, Legato, etc..), and those are
typically useful but somewhat generic.

Oracle Supports Rman's ability to successfully backup to disk. If there
exists a problem backing up to tape the MML vendor should be contacted fot
those issues.

I called the ct to discuss the issue.

They have been successfully backing up to tape for months.

This machine is logically divided up into several different logical nodes
and the target and catalog reside on different nodes. So, this may be a
linking issue (as is typical in this situation).

The ct states that his libobk is linked to the one provided byt the vendor.

He can contact them to ensure that it is linked correctly etc...

*

So they're claiming its a TYM issue.

I'm able to backup a normal TSM client no problem.

So I insist to the DBA's its in the RMAN setup which I have no control over
and he doesn't know very well.

anyone?

Oracle RMAN not deleting backups

The DBA's go through the process using RMAN, and it reports it has deleted

This is normal, healthy, working as designed behaviour. What is happening
is that the TSM server is being queried to verify that the file does not
exist on the TSM server before it sends it there for backup. I believe this
message is suppressed or otherwise non-existent in the latest version of TDP
for Oracle.

Re: Quick start to getting DB2 and ADSM working

2000-12-04 Thread James Thompson

I checked on what I put out yesterday, and the email client inserted all
sorts of garbage characters. Here is the same text again.

I would appreciate any feedback you may have for improvement.

Here is a quick start guide for backing up db2 to
adsm. This will be based on the AIX OS and the
3.7 TSM Api level.

1. Install DB2
2. Install TSM Api
3. create a plain text file dsm.opt in /usr/tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin
It only needs one line, the value for SERVERNAME is arbitrary, but
  must match the dsm.sys file
  SERVERNAME DB2
4. create a plain text file dsm.sys in /usr/tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin
It must contain at least the following.
  SERVERNAME DB2
  COMMMETHOD TCPIP
  TCPSERVERADDRESS xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
  NODENAME DB2TSM
  PASSWORDACCESS GENERATE
5. register the node DB2TSM on the TSM server
It is recommended to create a new DOMAIN on the TSM server for this
node.
It needs only one management class with a copygroup that has the
  following retention settings.
  VEREXIST=1
  VERDELETED=0
  RETEXTRA=0
  RETONLY=0
6. sign-on as root and cd to the db2 directory that contains the files
 db2adutl and dsmapipw.
7. run the executable 'dsmapipw' follow the prompts. It will ask for
the current password, then for a new password, and confirmation of the
new password. It should report if it is successful.
8. run the command 'db2adutl query' to confirm that the password file
was correctly set. If the command comes back and says no db2 objects
found then it is working (you haven't done any backups yet). You should
be able to check the activity log on the TSM server to confirm that the node
DB2TSM athenticated.
9. You can now perform a backup using the command line or the db2 connect
gui.

There is one point regarding password authentication that is not explained
really well.

Within the options file you can either specify passwordaccess
generate or password access prompt (dsm.opt for NT, dsm.sys
for the Unix flavors).

No matter which TSM password method you are using, these four
values are needed. ADSM NODE, ADSM PASSWORD, ADSM MGMTCLASS,
ADSM OWNER. These values can either come from
within the specific db2 database (db2 set db cfg .),
or come from the options file and current logged on user.

If you are using password access generate, those values
come from the options file and current logged on user.
The values within the specific db2 database are NOT used.
The ADSM NODE comes from the NODENAME option in the options
file. The ADSM MGMTCLASS comes from the options file or
goes to the default management class for the node.
The ADSM OWNER is only for the Unix variants and comes from
the user that is logged on to the OS and is performing the
backup(the instance owner, i.e. db2inst1). The ADSM
PASSWORD comes from an encrypted file that had to
be previously created by running the utility that comes
with db2, DSMAPIPW.

The only time the values set within the specific db2 database
are used is when passwordaccess is set to PROMPT. Note that
each db2 database in a given instance has it's own four adsm
values. You must set these everytime for each database if
you are going to use passwordaccess prompt.

The only time PASSWORDACCESS PROMPT is required is when you
are performing a restore of a db2 database that was backed
up under a different unix user (ADSM OWNER). This case is
when you are trying to restore a database backed up from a
different db2 instance (same machine or different) and want
to restore it to another db2 instance. DB2 calls this a
redirected restore.

What helped me understand why you had to use PASSWORDACCESS prompt
is the following. When a file or api object is backed up under Unix,
the owner of the object is sent as well. Only the owner or a ROOT
user can restore that object. In the case of a redirected restore
you have DB2 requiring you to be logged on as the unix user that
has authority to perform restores for that instance. But in this
case you are trying to restore a db2 database that was backed up
to ADSM with a different unix owner. So ADSM is requiring you to be
logged on as the unix user that initially performed the backup.
Since you can only be logged on once, and since DB2 and ADSM
require different users to be logged on, you have a conflict.
This is resolved by setting all the ADSM parameters within the
DB2 database that you are restoring to. You then specify password
access prompt, and when you perform the restore, DB2 is happy
since your are logged on as the instance owner, and ADSM is
happy because it gets the ADSM NODE, ADSM OWNER, and ADSM PASSWORD,
from the db2 database that is being restored into.

ebutool question

2000-12-04 Thread David Longo

I have TSM server 3.7.4.0 and a client with Oracle database 7.3.4 with Ebutool
2.2.0.6.0. To delete old data we have to manually enter command:
ebutool -db_name=db -purgejobs=5

This then prompts you if you really want to do this. Is there an option to ebutool to
not prompt this question? Basically I am looking for a way to fully automate this
either in a cron job on client or a CMD schedule from the Server.

OS/390 2.4 to 2.6 and TSM 3.7 performance.

2000-12-04 Thread Mark Brown

Hello,

We will be upgrading our os/3909 2.4 system to 2.6 to take
advantage of the newer tcp/ip stack that will hopefully improve
TSM backup/restore transfer rates.

The best I've seen here using a unix 3.7 client to the tsm 3.7 server
running on os/390 was about 1.5 KB/sec (aggregate). We have a 100 MB
connection to our network.

Could someone tell me what kind of performance increase I can expect
to see going to os/390 2.6 with the improved tcp/ip stack??

You have to configure/name the scheduler. Use either command line dsmcutil command or

Gang,

Scenario above. We are seeing an unusual number of crashes. Libraries are
Qualstar AIT and IBM 3575. Simple blue screen with little information.

Based on this slim evidence, anybody else experiencing such a thing or any

Re: Automated Admin Access.

We have created a directory /usr/local/admin/adsm that only root can read.
That way only a root user can be able to look at the scripts, our root

Greetings, all.

I have several scripts I run to perform "automatic" maintainance and
profiling
on my storage pools. Some of these scripts have bits that require a real
admin logon (such as a BACK STG PREVIEW=YES) so I've heretofore run them
attended, and typed in userid and password. I'd really like them to be able
to run completely unattended, but I hate the thought of leaving ID and
password hanging around on a filesystem in plaintext.

Have any of you folks encountered and/or solved this problem on AIX?

Hmm.. An IP filter, permitting or forbidding admins access based on where
they're coming from might make this simpler..

When you installed the 4.1 client - it should have automatically started

select "Help me configure the TSM Client Scheduler" from the front screen.
To invoke this wizard at any time, Select Setup Wizard from the Utilities

Re: OS/390 2.4 to 2.6 and TSM 3.7 performance.

2000-12-04 Thread William Boyer

When we made the conversion to OS/390 2.6, I actually got to talk to one of
the TSM server developers. It wasn't related to throughput, but I talked to
him about it. According to him, you won't really see a throughput
improvement so much as a reduction in TCP CPU utilization. By coding
directly to the BPX callable services, they are saving the 'translation' of
the TCP requests into the BPX sockets services. He told me that the big
throughput improvements come with the giga-bit Ethernet OSA cards. The
overhead of the Fast Ethernet OSA is what is preventing the thoughput since
the system still sees it as a channel-control unit-device, and still goes
through the whole IOS path. The gig-bit adapters are direct memory
accessible.

My thoughtput is about 10-12 GB/hour. That is testing a NTserver on the same
switch as the OSA card.

Re: 1 server with two policys?

2000-12-04 Thread Kelly J. Lipp

Yes, you sound lost!

I strongly recommend before proceeding much further that you consider a TSM
class. TSM is similar to CAM in the sense that you use Stager disk in both.
But from there the similarities end and TSM is completely different beast.
Your frustration level is going to increase dramatically without better
understanding.

The simple answer is yes, you can have two different policies: one for data
and one for DBs. There are a couple of ways of handling this: one Policy
Domain with two Managment classes or two Policy Domains. If you have two
types of data on one client (likely) then you will use one Domain and two
classes.

Short plug: SSSI is offering the Level 1 class next week in Colorado
Springs. We'd love to have you! Level 2 class is the week after next.

Re: 1 server with two policys?

2000-12-04 Thread Nicholas Cassimatis

Matt,

I have a similar setup, and, in the include/exclude list, I have the
following statement:

include /DATABASENAMEdatabase

Obviously, change DATABASENAME to the name of the database, as configured
by the DBA's.

On the server, in the domain where the node is registered, I have an
additional management class called "database" with a copy group configured
correctly for DB2 data. This binds the database backups (and any log
sweeps) to the database management class, so they expire correctly.

Once I showed the customer how much extra data we had keeping the databases
under the filesystem management class (keep last for 90 days), they wanted
it implemented immeadiately.

APAR IC25335

NT EVENT VIEW REPORTS "PERFLIB" ERRORS AGAINST DSMCPERF.DLL.

ERROR DESCRIPTION:
The Win32 client at 3.1.0.7 introduced a new performance
monitoring function which includes the files:
dsmperf.dll
perfctr.ini
dsmccnm.h
In some cases, this is not installed properly and can have 2
 separate results:
 1. The NT Event Viewer - Application Log shows PERFLIB 1011
 error against dsmcperf.dll (DWORD0)
This only occurs if the customer tries to open the NT
 Performance Monitor
 2. Same error in the form of an NT Error Box on boot.
In this case, there are registry entries missing under the
 Hkey_Local_Machine > system > currentcontrolset > services >
 ADSM Client Performance > performance.
The entries are "First Counter", "First Help", "Last Counter

", "Last Help"
LOCAL FIX:
>From the \adsm\baclient subdir, issue the commands:
1. unlodctr "ADSM Client Performance"
2. lodctr perfctr.ini
This will eliminate the error messages

COMMENTS: Please see the closing remarks for V3.1 IC24370.
In TSM Version 3.7, the performance monitor function is still
inactivated, pending a redesign (if it is possible) so
that other performance monitoring tools such as Netfinity
do not cause TSM to have this problem. The remarks for IC24370
 apply in V3.7 as well.

It is a suggestion for a future release to try to redesign
and reimplement the function so that it will work when
outside performance monitors are also in use.

Subject: ADSM Client Performance counters

Has anybody got the ADSM Client Performance counters working for the v4.1
TSM
client software running under NT?

I installed the 4.1.1.16 client on an NT workstation. The install created a
key
in the registry called "TSM Client Performance". However, the versions of
DSMCPERF.DLL and PERFCTR.INI that were installed seemed to reference a key
called "ADSM Client Performance".

I managed to sort this out, along with the extraneous quotation marks and
lack
of a fully qualified path to the DLL in the registry values. I then used
LODCTR
to load the counters into Performance Monitor.

The counters appear, but never register any backup activity. They just stay
at
zero.

I've got an additional problem with the client running on a Compaq server.
On
this system, starting the Compaq NT Management and Patrol for Insight
Manager
services causes an 'ADSM_Client_ThreadList_Mutex' error in the event log.
The
source of the error is "ADSM Client Performance".

Has anybody got this working?

Re: 1 server with two policys?

2000-12-04 Thread James Thompson

Per some of the other responses to your question, you have two main choices
for keeping API (DB2) data separate from your backup/archive client data.
Either way you should use separate nodenames for these two types of data.
Once you have two nodenames, you can have them belong to the same domain,
but use the INCLUDE/EXCLUDE list to send API data to a management class with
the desired retention (VERDEL=0 RETONLY=0).

Or you can create a new domain and update the node that will be doing the
API backups to be a member of this domain. Then you just need one
management class as the default and you don't have to worry about
incorrectly setting the include statement. I recommend using a second
domain.

TSM had a design change and no longer installs the scheduler on client install.
You can use the dsmcutil program to install it, or do it from the gui. But
there is a problem in that the gui interface deletes the excludes/includes
from your dsm.opt file. So if you want to use the gui interface, save a
copy of your dsm.opt file before hand.
