Reuse off old dbb volumes

2000-11-20 Thread Bent Lerager

Hi TSM's

I have a TSM server, where I make a dbbackup every day, and delete old
dbbackup volumes after 3 days, but how can I find the old (just deleted )
dbbackup volume name, so I can retrieve it from vault ??
It is not in volhis list any more, the act log don't say what volumes have
been deleted from the volhis list, and even when I know the volume name, it
is not possible to query the volume because it is not in any storagepool.

Please help so I can reuse the right tapes.

Client Acceptor and firewall

2000-11-20 Thread Petr Přerost

Hello ,
I am configuring TSM client throught firewall ( CheckPoint ) - I know that
this configuration is unsupported but we
created some rules for B/A a scheduler sessions . What I failed is client
acceptor - it seems that after
http connect to port 1581 client receives java applet + dynamic port number
used by java applet for connection
to client acceptor service . Does somebody know how to set up port used by
client acceptor ?
It seems that there is some communication on port 2370 between applet and
TSM client - any idea ?
Any help in this area will be highly appreciated.

Solaris 8 TSM 4.1.1 client gui msgs of missing fonts and a core dump

2000-11-20 Thread Andreas Buser

Hi together,

I have installed the Tivoli Sun Solaris Client Level 4.1.1 on two Solaris
2.8 systems. The ADSM-server ist on OS/390 at 3.1.2.50 (will be migrated to
4.1 in spring).

The installed client at cmd-line level works well, no problem.
But when I start the gui with dsm, then I get at lot of the following
messages:

Warning: No font found.
Warning:
Name: FONTLIST_DEFAULT_TAG_STRING
Class: XmRendition
Conversion failed. Cannot load font.

Then the first window is shown, but then when I press a icon a core dump
is done and the application ist abended.

I have not found anything in the error-databases nor in the adsm-archives.
Is this an enviromental error at our installation and does someone else
have this error too?

If this is not an error in the client sw, does anyone know a solution?

If this is realy a SW-error, which means I'm not the only one having these
abends, then I will report it to tivoli.

Are there any GUI-based ADSM administration clients available for either

Re: Exchange Agent Scheduler

2000-11-20 Thread Michel Engels

Sorry, but why do you need an extra additional scheduler. When you work on an NT
box you can execute the backups via a small script (DOS) this can be scheduled
through the server via a command schedule where you specify the complete name
(path + file) of the script (*.bat or *.cmd) in the objects field of the
schedule. In this script you specify the databases to backup for Exchange and if
you want a full or incremental backup. A second thing you have to create is a
little scripts that will delete old backup files with the ifolder parameter. The
traditional backups of the server you can keep running via the same "Client
schedule" service.

Hope this helps you,

Michel

Bent - It would certainly be convenient if the volsers of the deleted db
backup volumes were recorded in the Activity Log. Two ways to get
around their absence:

1. Have an operating system job capture the volsers of the BACKUPFULL,
BACKUPINCR volumes contained in the volume history backup file (named
in the server VOLUMEHistory option) before and after the db backup,
   then compare.
2. Do 'Query ACtlog BEGINDate=-N MSGno=1361' to pick up the historical volsers
of the db backup volumes at backup completion to check against those no
   longer in the volume history.

NIC Question

2000-11-20 Thread Barth, Terry (MBS)

Hello All -

I have a sun solaris ADSM server that has 3 NIC cards. We would like to
utilize all 3 NIC cards for backups and restores, independently. We set up
the cards according to SUN and everything seems fine on that end. However,
when a backup starts off, it sends all data through the first NIC card and
then when it receives data, it spans through all 3 cards. Our switch
recognizes all 3 cards, but as soon as a backup begins on one of the other
NICS - say for instance, 48.22, the MAC disappears and the switch no longer
recognizes the card. We feel that there is something on the ADSM server
side that we need to set up so that if we tell a client to do a backup and
designate that the server has an IP address of xx.xx.48.22, that all
communications will go through this NIC card and not touch the others.

xx.xx.48.20
xx.xx.48.21
xx.xx.48.22

My question is, what is it that I need to set up on the ADSM server side, so
that it uses each NIC card independently.

I have placed the IP address in the opt file on the client end. Is there
something that I need to do on the server end?

Any assistance will be appreciated.

Thanks

Terry

Tape Vaulting

2000-11-20 Thread Steve and Hilda Harris

Hi All

I'm trying to put a square peg into a round hole and wonder if you guys can
help

I'm trying to set up offsite vaulting on a TSM server, without DRM and I've
been directed to use the same storage company that has been used in the
past. This company only offers a "box" level service, ie they will take a
box of tapes off-site for storage and bring it back on request. They will
not open the box to retrieve a single volume, and every box movement is
charged for.

My first thought was to put one tape in each box
Other than that ...

Lets assume that we keep boxes off site on a 60 day rotation

DBB volumes will be ok, just delete them from volhist at 60 days.
For copypool volumes, all I can think of is to check the date last written
and run move data on any that are not empty or pending at 60
days-reusedelay. Also I'll set the reclaim level so that most tapes are
reclaimed before they would need to have data moved

How does everyone else handle this?

Thanks

Re: Tape Vaulting

Steve,

We too have a service that only works with a "box". We send our people to
the service once a month to go through the boxes and bring back tapes. If
you can't do this then your other option is to have two copypools.
Switching between the two.

PASSWORDACCESS pertains to the client node password, not an administrator
password, which varies by administrator.

Yet another approach would be to perform the administrative action through an
agent, in the form of a program which has the admin password encrypted within
it, say; or an intermediary daemon which recognizes you as authorized in some
way.

you can try to set explicit routes (route add ...) for every client. But i think

Re: Exchange Agent Scheduler

Bill,

Is DSMCUTIL failing with that error?
If I recall this might be an issue with a mix-match
in the installed TSM API version vs. the base client (DSMCUTIL) version.
You may have to get a 3.1.0.8 version of the adsmv3.dll
and put it into the directory with DSMCUTIL.EXE.

Re: NIC Question

But I have heard that you can set up the 3 NIC cards to be independent for
the backups.

My problem is, when we kick off a backup, since these 3 NIC cards on a the
same VLAN, the switch drops the MAC address of the other 2 and thus, floods
the VLAN.

Any suggestions?

That is true. Direct the client to communuicate with the IP of an auxiliary
card. All large quantity data communication from the client to the server will
go to the auxiliary IP, however, the communication from the server will return
to the client via the primary NIC. This is not really a problem since it is
brief cammands for the most part. The clinker is during restores.

Re: NIC Question

2000-11-20 Thread Patrick Boutilier

On Linux you can specifiy routes through certain cards. For instance if I have 3
cards with IPs of 10.0.0.1, 10.0.0.2, and 10.0.0.3 and I want traffic to
10.0.0.11 to go originate from 10.0.0.3 I add a route like such:

route add 10.0.0.11 gw 10.0.0.3

Not sure if this will work in a Sun environment and this only controls the
outgoing traffic.

Re: Exchange Agent Scheduler

2000-11-20 Thread Tomblin, David

When the Exchange agent is installed it replaces the old adsmv3.dll (566KB )
with its adsmv3.dll ( 472KB ). With this dll in place dsmcutil errors out.
If you place the old adsmv3.dll back in the system32 directory, the dsmcutil
will work.

Re: NIC Question

2000-11-20 Thread Gill, Geoffrey L.

Terry,

I'm not sure what the answer is, our network folks have found the same
problems. My only recourse has been to use a gigabit card for the primary
NIC where most traffic and nodes are. We've also had to make sure computers
on other networks are connected to a nic on the ADSM server with an IP on
that network, that should be SOP though.

Here is what I was told by the IBM guy who set us up:
**This is a function of TCPIP and the "Default Route". I mentioned this
when I was out last time, since the network cards are on the same subnet,
all TCP reponse traffic will go out on the Default Route which is the .111
adapter. The only way to truly fix this is to put the other adapters on a
different subnet.**

The network people here have tried to manually enter information on the
switch side so it remembers the MAC address of each nic but unfortunetly
this has not worked either. I don't know if there are others on the list who
might also have seen this problem and have solved it. All I know is every
time there is a network glitch they want to blame it on ADSM.

TSM network broadcast problems

2000-11-20 Thread Fritz Mesumbe

Hi all,

My new 3466 system with a 3494 library was installed a
couple of months ago. The server is ver. 3 rel, level
2.0 and the clients are ver 3, rel 7, level 2.0.1.
Things are working fine but for a few problems that I
need a little assistance with. Our network is made up
of mainly NT 4.0 servers, a few UNIX boxes and some
DEC VMS mainframes on a 10 MB/sec backbone. This
backbone was upgraded last week with a Cisco 4006
Switch.

Problem:

1. The network gets flooded when I run even a singe
backup, and this generates Decnet errors on the VMS
systems. The problem has partially been corrected with
the installation of the switch but I am still
experiencing some network broadcasts especially when
Exchange clients are running. I am running Exchange
server 5.5 and TSM agent ver 1.1.1.0.

2. This problem does not occur with all nodes. I have
checked the network configuration of the NT servers
and they are fine.

I have been able to correct the problem with some
clients by uninstalling and reinstalling.

Any assistance with this problem will be highly
appreciated.

Failure of Archive Events with 4.11.16 client on NT

2000-11-20 Thread Rushforth, Tim

Andy Raibeck wrote in March 1999:
"In the case of a SELECTIVE backup or an ARCHIVE, if one or more files can
not be backed up (or archived) then the event will be failed. The rationale
for this is that if you ask to selectively back up or archive one or more
files, the assumption is that you want each and every one of those files to
be processed. If even one file fails, then the event will have a status of
failed. So the basic difference is that with incremental we expect that one
or more files might not be able to be processed, so we do not flag such a
case as failed. In other cases, like SELECTIVE or ARCHIVE, we expect that
each file specified *must* be processed successfully, or else we flag the
operation as failed."

Has this changed? Under 3.1.06 client on NT, an archive would show as
failed if a file was in use. With the 4.11.16 client, archive does not show
as failed when files are in use or when archiving drives that do not exist.

TSM 4.1 pricing and reseller

2000-11-20 Thread Wu, Jie

Hi all,
I am planning to upgrade our current ADSM 3.1 to TSM 4.1. I talked
with IBM and got a quote of ~$40,000 (after 40% discount) for our RS/6000
based server and 200 clients (14 unix and 186 intel), which is much higher
than my budget based on a quote for TSM 3.7 I requested from IBM in July. (
It is about $27,000 ). This situation is really frustrating and I am hoping
that I can get a better price from a reseller. Has anybody got a good deal
from a reseller and recommend to me?

Thanks!!

 Norma,

I think this has to do with the atape level. I remember some warning
issued by IBM where you get harmless but annoying I/O error messages
when atape is downlevel compared to the TSM level used, you'd have to
upgrade to the latest atape level (5.3.?) to get rid of the messages.

Hello:
We have TSM on an AIX system with a 3575 library connected to it.
The environment is the following:
Op. System: AIX 4.3.3.0
Tivoli Storage Manager 4.1.1.0
Library: 3575 L06
Library Microcode level: 2.19
1 3570 Drive
3570 Drive Microcode: 44D
Atape version: 4.0.4.2
TSM seems to work properly. We are able to backup and restore data
and the TSM database. But Activity log shows IO errors as follows:
ANR8311E An I/O error occurred while accessing drive
3570DRV (/dev/rmt0) for GETLOGSENSE operation, errno =22

Devclass is defined as follows:
DEFINE DEVCLASS 3570DC DEVTYPE=3570 FORMAT=DRIVE MOUNTLIMIT=1
MOUNTWAIT=60 MOUNTRETENTION=60 PREFIX=TSMLIBRARY=3575LIB
The library is defined as follows:
DEFINE LIBRARY 3575LIB LIBTYPE=SCSI DEVICE=/dev/smc0 SHARED=NO
And the drive is defined as follows:
DEFINE DRIVE 3575LIB 3570DRV DEVICE=/dev/rmt0 ELEMENT=16 ONLINE=Yes
The operating system recognizes the library and the drive properly with
Atape.

Can anybody help please
Thanks and best regards: Norma

Re: DIRMC - disadvantages only?

2000-11-20 Thread Allen Barth

Hello all. When I saw this posting I was tempted to reply but knowing I
had a DR test coming in mid-NOV I figured I'd get some real life data about
DIRMC to share with everyone. I was not prepared for what happened.

Background:

Server TSM4.1.1 on AIX 4.3.3.6
Client TSM4.1.1 on AIX 4.3.3.6
I have DIRMC specified for all clients. The structure is as follows:

DIRMC: uses pool DIRDISK which migrates to pool DIRTAPE,backed up to
pool DRTAPES
DATAMC: uses pool DATADISK which migrates to pool DATATAPE, backed up to
pool DRTAPES

The result is a single copy pool containing all data and dir info (non
collocated).

DR RESULTS:

Having restored ONLY the TSM server db and log areas, I updated all vols in
DIRTAPE and DATATAPE to destroyed. Also updated all disk vols to off-line.
Then updated all tapes in DRTAPES to READO.

When I issued a restore for any given FS, all of the dirs were recreated
(restored) WITHOUT any tapes being called for. The first mount didn't
occur until a data file was needed.

Hi all,

The 'old' redbook "Getting started with ADSM: A practical Implemantation
Guide" recommends to use a seperate MC and STP for directories (for restore
performance reasons). Chapter 13.2.3 DIRMC (page 236) states:

"In a restore ..., ADSM first restores the directories and then the
files..."

(This chapter is identical in the newer "Getting started with TSM:
Implementation Guide.)

However there are DIRMC disadvantages as well; recently a known DIRMC
performance problem was described by NORBERT WINDRICH:

>we made a move data of a dirmc copy pool. The move data process
>needs 5:12 hours to move 70 823 172 bytes. Most of the data is read
>from a disk storage pool. For database files we can move up to 10 GB
>per hour.

At out site we have the same problem (caused by tape repositioning zillion
times) , but with migration. Fortunately BILL BOYER responded with the
following AND a solution:

>A co-worker of mine worked with IBM/Tivoli on this. The symptoms came
during
>the reclamation of the offsite copypool tapes for the DIRMC disk storage
>pool. The answer he got was that reading from the disk storage pool was
done
>a file at a time and not buffered. They said it was because it was a
random
>access device and they had no plans to 'fix' it.[...]
>What he came up with was to create a sequential primary pool with a FILE
>device class and make this the NEXTSTGpool for the DIRMC disk pool and
>migrate daily. The reclamation and BA STG are alot faster.[...]
>The reclamation [...] runs in about an hour [...] instead of a day.

This solution sounds perfect and should work (not repeated yet), but ... is
there still a need for DIRMC after RICHARD SIMS kicks in?:

[...]
>Consider also that dirmc isn't what it once was. ADSMv3
>introduced the concept of Restore Order. See that entry in
>http://people.bu.edu/rbs/ADSM.QuickFacts, or APAR IC24321.

So, i looked up this entry in the QuickFact to find (try to find this in
the
TSM manuals...):
[...]"restore order" considers
where objects
exist on sequential media and
brings
them back in this order so that the
media can be moved from beginning
to
end. One of the side effects of
this[...]

This suggest that (in V3) files and directories are retrieved just as the
come along on the media, contrary to the redbook suggestion ("In a restore
..., ADSM first restores the directories and then the files..."), however
the APAR text is not completely clear to me. If the redbook is correct, a
seperate pool for DIRMC makes sense. If the redbook in not correct, it
seems there is no justification for a DIRMC pool.

In the last case we would all be better off just leave the
complicated-but-not-so-usefull feature!

This leaves me with two Questions:

1) Is the use of DIRMC obsolete? (complex, but no advantage) (of course we
can always 'make up' some advantage, like 'its nice tho have the dirtree
seperate..')

2) If the redbook is incorrect, but if DIRMC is still used (with seperate
STG) how will a restore work, first the DIRMC STP, then the file STP or
what?

Jochem - I think you missed some postings...
In file system types where the directory structure is simple, *SM is
able to store the directory attributes, need to reconstruct it, solely within
the *SM database, same as it does with empty files. Only if the otherwise
simple object is accompanied by an Access Control List does it involve so much
information that it has to be stored in a storage pool. That's the beauty of
simpler file systems: your directory structure can be restored immediately, with
no media mounts. This is generally the case in Unix systems, as your AIX.

I summarize this in my http://people.bu.edu/rbs/ADSM.QuickFacts, under
"DIRMc".

Hi David,

>From the "TSM for NetWare Using the Backup-Archive Client"

Ipxserveraddress

The ipxserveraddress option specifies the IPX/SPX address
of a server on an OS/2 or AIX host that is not in the same
network as the client node. If the IPX/SPX address is not
specified, the server must be in the same network as the

Syntax

   >>-IPXSErveraddress- server_address><

Parameters

   server_address

  Specifies a twenty-hexadecimal digit IPX/SPX address
for a server. Pad each field with leading zeros if the
value is shorter than the specified length. An IPX/SPX
address is a concatenation of the following digits:

  - The first eight hexadecimal digits that identify the

  - The last twelve digits that identify the server node
address.

If an IPX/SPX address is not specified, the default

Brian,
I suppose your problem is how to derive the ip address from the ADSM node
name?

One way of doing this would be to extract it from the activity log, e.g.
'q act begind=-7 MSG=0406 sea=name_of_missed_node'

This should display the ip address that was used the last time a backup was started.

Re: IPX Clients

2000-11-20 Thread David Longo

Thanks - that did the trick!!

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 11/20/00 04:15PM >>>
Hi David,

>From the "TSM for NetWare Using the Backup-Archive Client"
manual:

---
Ipxserveraddress

The ipxserveraddress option specifies the IPX/SPX address
of a server on an OS/2 or AIX host that is not in the same
network as the client node. If the IPX/SPX address is not
specified, the server must be in the same network as the
   client node.

Syntax

   >>-IPXSErveraddress- server_address><

Parameters

   server_address

  Specifies a twenty-hexadecimal digit IPX/SPX address
for a server. Pad each field with leading zeros if the
value is shorter than the specified length. An IPX/SPX
address is a concatenation of the following digits:

  - The first eight hexadecimal digits that identify the
server network address.

  - The last twelve digits that identify the server node
address.

If an IPX/SPX address is not specified, the default
address for the server is the same address as the
  client workstation.

Examples

   Options file:

  ipxse 000210005af6e7cc

   Command line:

  -ipxserveraddress=000210005af6e7cc

ANS1036S

2000-11-20 Thread Gill, Geoffrey L.

Wondering what this is:

Trying to learn something about AIX and I'm running into a wall, not
surprising though. I have a couple of problems in that:

1. If I run dsmcad from the command line, while in the directory where it
resides, it is there I can see it, I get the message:
/bin/ksh: dsmcad: not found.

The TSM 4.1 book "Installing the Clients" is where I got the info to start
the TSM Client Acceptor daemon.

2. When I try to run the baclient from the web client I get the following
error:
ANS2619S The Client Acceptor Daemon was unable to start the Remote Client
Agent. Now in the web client error log I see the following:

ANS1036S Invalid option 'D' found in options file
'/ust/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin' at line number : 1 Invalid entry 'D'

Explanations is as follows:
Explanation: The specified option in the TSM options file (file-name) is in
error.
System Action: Processing stopped.
User Response: Correct the options file entry.

But I don't see a 'd' or 'D' in my options file on line 1 so I guess I don't
get it. I checked both the dsm.sys and the dsm.opt.

What am I missing on both of these?

Running TSM 4.1.1 on AIX 4.3.3

I am not sure the environment is set correctly since I've built from scratch
and am just learning, so any help is appreciated.

How many TDP Licenses do I have?

2000-11-20 Thread E. J.

I am trying to determine how many TDP for Lotus Domino
licenses I have. A 'query license' just shows that
the server is licensed for these clients but does not
say how many. How can I determine this?

Re: How many TDP Licenses do I have?

2000-11-20 Thread Kelly J. Lipp

The licenses are on the clients in 3.7. You turn on support, but keep track
of licenses via the paper you got with the license file on the CD.

In 4.1, you actually license the number of Agents on the server side.

We've been offered a good deal on a StorageWorks TL895 DLT library.
Anyone using one and have advice, pro or con? We'll most likely
wind up hooking it to an RS/6000 H70, if that makes a difference...

Re: ANS1036S

2000-11-20 Thread James Thompson

I've seen this before. You most likely have your DSM_CONFIG pointed to a
directory.
For example DSMI_CONFIG=/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin
instead of DSMI_CONFIG=/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin/dsm.opt

Check all of your DSM environment variables.

Offsite copypools and rellocaction

2000-11-20 Thread Paul Ewing

We are in the process of creating offsite copypools for DR purposes. We are
constrained with the number of tape drives and the available window for
running reclamation. I have read the item "Re: Offsite DR Cartridges" which
implies that cartridge usage could increase dramatically with collocation
turned on for these pools. We have 72 nodes registered to ADSM and the
copypools total approximately 2TB. What is the recommended approach for
offsite copypools?

Re: Offsite copypools and rellocaction

2000-11-20 Thread Steve Harris

normally offsite pools aren't collocated.

IMO to be effective, you must send offsite every day any DR copypool tape that is is
full or filling.
Obviously if you are collocating you are likely to have one new tape per client per
day that is only part full.
If you can afford that - great.

It should be easier getting the IP Address from the new Summary Table.
