Strange,

I am seeing a similar message during start of the server (3.1.2.57), but
never saw it during a restore. I always contributed it to a problem
we are known to have in our DB. (I could not afford to run the suggested
DUMP/LOAD/AUDIT DB so far.) And, what a coincidence, we are also using
ADSM to backup our DFS (dsmcdfs with VIRTUALMOUNTPOINT definitions) ...

Sorry of beeing not able to supply more help. But, could you please
tell me, if and how you resolved the problem?

scheduled restore->rename of files

2000-10-24 Thread Warren, Matthew James

Hello *SMers,

I am in a situation where I cannot use trial and error, so...

Does anybody know how to define a restore schedule for a single file such
that it is renamed on the target node?

What does the OBJ string need to be? - I dont want to get this wrong and
overwrite the file that is already there, and the syntax given in the help
from the server is not clear for def sched.

Its simple if your at a dsmc console, but from the server def sched help it
seems it will treat the files as just a list of two files to restore rather
than

file_to_restorenew_file_name

Thanks,

Problems with Barcode Reader.

2000-10-24 Thread Gwen Garcia

L.S.
We have a problem with a Magstar 3575 Tape library.
When auditing the library, with parameter "checklºrcode" the barcode is
not recognized.
The robot must put the tape in the drive in order to recognize the tape
label.

All the microcodes and the Atape drivers have been upgraded to the
latest
level, but to no avail.

We think that the problem is hardware related.
Can anyone out there give us some assistance or clues?

Reading the label on the tape is the documented fall-back for when the barcode
cannot be read. Check the tape to assure that there is a barcode on it, that
it is properly affixed (not askew), and that its bars are distinct. (The
barcodes from some companies are rather smudgy, making reading difficult.)
If this is the only tape that this is happening with, then it would be that
one tape. If all tapes, then have a service technician have a look at the
barcode reader itself.

Full backup at end of BST?

2000-10-24 Thread Neil Schofield

British Summer Time (daylight saving time in UK) ends this weekend. I have just
done a test by rolling the time forward on a test NT client and it appears that
I should expect the first backup after the end of BST will be a full backup!

I've tried this with 3.7 and 4.1 TSM clients for Windows and the result is the
same. I can't remember having this problem before I upgraded from the v3.1
client software.

Both the client and the server are running on NT with the option to
automatically adjust for daylight savings changes enabled.

What am I missing? Surely TSM uses the UCT timestamp on the file. Has anybody
else encountered this?

I really don't want to come to work next week if the first backup of all my TSM
clients is going to backup everything.

Larry,
Query Status and look at the "Maximum Sessions" and Maximum Scheduled
Sessions. The maxsessions is the total sessions that can go on at once and
the maxschedsessions is the percent of those that can be initiated by a
schedule. Reset these by "SET MAXSCHEDSESSIONS #" and "SETOPT MAXSESSIONS #"
if they aren't large enough.

For instance, a user deletes a certain directory and wants to restore it.
Since most of the files are static and have aged, they have been migrated

DB2 transaction log backup

Hi All,

DB2 v5.2 on AIX. Instead of using db2 exit, I am setting up DB2 online
backup by

db2 backup database online use adsm
dsmc archive the transaction log (with serialization = share dynamic in
copygroup)

In order to test the serialization=sharedynamic, during online backup I run
a script to insert records to a table continuously to make the transaction
log keep on changing.

Example of dsmc archive log:
Normal File--> 4,104,192
/home/db2inst2/db2inst2/NODE/SQL1/SQLOG
DIR/S072.LOG Changed
Retry # 1  Normal File--> 4,104,192

1/SQLOGDIR/S072.LOG Changed
Retry # 2  Normal File--> 4,104,192
/home/db2inst2/db2inst2/NODE/SQL
1/SQLOGDIR/S072.LOG Changed
Retry # 3  Normal File--> 4,104,192

Retry # 4  Normal File--> 4,104,192
/home/db2inst2/db2inst2/NODE/SQL

I can perform db2 restore and retrieve the transaction log, db2 rollforward
successful and everything is OK.
Just want to know if there is any risk to archive transaction log by using
serialization=share dynamic.

Thanks in advance.

Re: DB2 Error - Return code 41

Hi Brenda,

The latest doc for 4.1 does include the infor for RC 41. Also,
you can find the brief description in dsmrc.h, located in
directory ..\TSM\api\include.

RC 41 means DSM_RS_ABORT_EXCEED_MAX_MP, which means that the
client was attempting to use more mountpoints for a backup or
archive operation than permitted by the server.

>From the Admin, run QUERY NODE nodename FORMAT=DETAILED to
determine the maximum allowed mountpoints for the node. You
may need to use UPDATE NODE to increast this value.

If the intent is for this client to back up to disk, you
will need to check other things in your configuration to
understand why it is trying to go to tape.

Brenda - SQL messages are from DB2 itself. See IBM message references
 like http://magna.cs.ucla.edu/db2doc/db2m0/sql2000.htm
But the message description is trite. You'll probably get more insight

Re: 3590 tape compress question

2000-10-24 Thread Andy Raibeck

When client compression is turned on, the data is already
arriving to the TSM server in a compressed state. The 3590
may indeed be trying to compress this data again, but
compressed data does not compress very well, so this is why
you see the misleading utilization.

Keep in mind though, that the data is *still* compressed.
It's just a matter of who is doing the compression (software
or hardware). The 40 - 50 GB on cartridge that you were seeing
may very well represent 100 or more GB of uncompressed data.
So your cartridge that shows 50 GB used is still actually
housing 100 GB. So either way, you are getting the benefits of
compression.

Now the question becomes who you want to do the compression.
Choosing to use or not use client compression can have an
impact on your entire network. In general, client compression
requires more overhead on the client system, but can help save
on network bandwidth... but you may get misleading stats on
your tape utilization. It's a matter of understanding that the
40 - 50 GB you see on the tape represents 100 GB or more of
real client data. And don't forget to test restore performance,
because restores may be slower if the client has to decompress
the data before putting it back to disk.

On the other hand, if network bandwidth is not an issue, then
let the hardware do the work of compression.

I am sure others can convey their experiences with client vs.
hardware compression. My main point is that just because you
see lower cartridge utilization does not necessarily mean you
are not gaining the benefits of compression; it's just a matter
of where the compression is happening. Also, and perhaps more
important, is to understand the potential impact to your
network of turning client compression on or off.

Andy

Re: Move client data to another stgpool

2000-10-24 Thread Allen Barth

Well, yes and no, depending on how much pain you are willing to put up with.

If you are looking to be able to directly MOVE the data for these filesystems,
the answer is NO! That funtionality doesn't exist in TSM, but has been
requested several times. The only way I got done what you're looking to do was
to turn on collocation in the old pool, wait for (or help) tapes to split out
data, and then do move data commands. Another method would be to selective
backup the files again. Finding out what those files are can be done but it is
time consuming.

MAJOR PAIN IN THE BUTT!

Yes I shouted, still don't think IBM/Tivoli heard though. "Can't see the forest
for the trees" applies here. Sigh.

TSM 4.1.1

I have 2 stgpools in a 3494 library, one collocated and one noncollocated.
I have a client that has about 10 percent of its backed up data in the
noncollocated pool, the rest is in collocated where it should be. I think
the data in noncollocated is remaining from original backups before I made
the client collocated. Is it possible to just move this client's data out
of the noncollocated pool and put it into the collocated pool where it
should be? It is the same filespace that is split between the pools.

I have other clients data in the collocated and noncollocated pools that
I'd rather not mess with.

It's not critical to move the data, but I would like to if possible just to
keep things cleaned up and my data totals accurate.

Optimum diskpool size

2000-10-24 Thread Gerard M Hanway

I look after the companies TSM environment. Approx 700 servers back up an
average of 60-70gb per night. The ADSM server runs on OS/390 with 500 OS/2 and
200 NT clients. I have 2 primary disk pools, one of 45GB for the NT
servers(colocated) and one of 4GB for the OS/2 servers(non colocated). HIMIG is
set to 80% on the large pool and usually results is migration starting between 2
and 3am each morning and completing around 9am.

However the storage people have just been in touch wanting to know what I am
doing with so much disc in the large pool. Basically they want 30gb back leaving
leaving me with just 15gb. I suspect that things should continue to work just
with migration kicking it a lot earlier however I would welcome opinions.

Is there a recommended ratio of disk pool size to amount of data backed up. What
ratio do most people use. Are there quantifable performance impacts in running
migration at the same time as backups. I do know from experience that with
migration starting significantly earlier I can expect a lot of additional tape
mounts. But it might be argued so what.
Are there any other gotcha's

I had a similar situation and support gave me the following work around.
This was for a 3.1.0.7 client so you may need to adjust it for the Tivoli
version. Since it involves 'hacking' the registry, do this at your own
risk. I believe there is an apar open for this problem as well.

James Thompson

1)At the \adsm\baclient directory, issue the following command:
unlodctr "ADSM Client Performance"
2)Open up REGEDIT

3)Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENT CONTROL SET\SERVICES\
ADSM CLIENT PERFORMANCE\PERFORMANCE and delete the following string:
OPEN"OpenADSMPerfData"
This should be the last string on your screen. DO NOT DELETE the ADSM
CLIENT PERFORMANCE folder, only the above string in \performance folder
4) Clear out the Application log in Event Viewer. If you feel that you may
need to reference back to this again, please save a copy.

After you have done this, shut down and restart.

Re: Optimum diskpool size

2000-10-24 Thread Warren, Matthew James

Hello,

I would do some tests to see how quickly you are able to migrate from the
diskpool with single or multiple migration processes, and also to see how
quickly your diskpools fill up, and take it from there. The only other thing
I would be aware of is the size of the files being backed up - TSM will only
migrate the file once it has finished backing up, and 6 / 7 clients sending
2GB+ files will fill up a smaller stgpool before migration kicks in.

Matt.

situation where a number of clients begin to transfer data then abruptly appear to
'stop'. They are qued up and transfer small amounts of data with long periods of
inactivities. When this occurs the restores also appear to drag. Has anyone
experienced this? This is new to our environment and I'm wondering if others have
experienced this after migrating to TSM 3.7.2

Larry,
Query Status and look at the "Maximum Sessions" and Maximum Scheduled
Sessions. The maxsessions is the total sessions that can go on at once and
the maxschedsessions is the percent of those that can be initiated by a
schedule. Reset these by "SET MAXSCHEDSESSIONS #" and "SETOPT MAXSESSIONS #"
if they aren't large enough.

Re: DB2 Error - Return code 41

2000-10-24 Thread Collins, Brenda

Hi Andy,

Thank you! I did go back and look at my API manual and I was looking at the
3.7 version. I will download the newer version so I am up to date. Is
there any easy way to determine how often I am using all the drives? I
started running a 'q mount' command every 30 minutes today so I could
possibly track it that way. I am sending all my DB2 backups to tape but
because different DBA's schedule backups for their systems through scripts,
it is hard for me to manage the tape drive usage so they don't conflict with
each other.

If anyone has any ideas regarding how to handle a scheduling issue for
database backups, please let me know.

Brenda

Andy

Hi:
-look at your activity log for stats
-you would normally not do a selective.
-your 1st incremental will back up everything. After that changed files. Doing a

Re: ADSM and MS Cluster

2000-10-24 Thread Burkhart, Damon

Interestingly enough, I just completed my first config of ADSM for a
cluster. Although the installation is not clearly documented, I found the
Redbook fairly useful. One warning however: the notes for the options
required for the service install aren't as good in the Redbook. I ended up
using the notes from the readme for 3.1.8. for configuring my batch command
file the line reads as follows:
 @echo on
dsmcutil %1 /node:%2 /password:%3 /name:"ADSM Scheduler Service FSCL1"
/autostart:yes /schedlog:"f:\adsm\dsmsched.log"
/errorlog:"f:\adsm\dsmerror.log" /optfile:"F:\adsm\dsm.opt"
I simply copied the entire BAClient dir to the resource group's folder \adsm
then made sure I had the correct opt file with the exclusions and all setup.
I could send you a sample file if you would like to see how I have mine
layed out.
Also, don't forget to bind the service through the Cluster Administrator.
One point I noticed was that the service as I installed it to each owner in
the Cluster was set to Automatic. After adding the service as a Generic
Service in the cluster it became Manual on the active server.

Re: Optimum diskpool size

2000-10-24 Thread Cook, Dwight E

OK, I basically keep a diskpool big enough to contain an entire night's
backups.
Now this is compressed...
Things to remember:
Clients, even though using compression, allocate enough disk space
in the diskpool to hold the file uncompressed, once the transfer is
completed, unused space is freed. If you have a lot of concurrent sessions
sending large .dbf files (that compress nicely) you end up with sessions
rolling tape when they don't really need to because yadayadayada trust
me
When there is lots of client activity and you initiate migrations,
you have TSM DB lock contention with inbound sessions & the migration
processes, not as bad now as in the past but it is still there just the
same.
Another "trust me", in a limited number of tape drives environment
you don't want inbound sessions & migrations fighting over tape drives.

just things I've run into

I look after the companies TSM environment. Approx 700 servers back up an
average of 60-70gb per night. The ADSM server runs on OS/390 with 500 OS/2
and
200 NT clients. I have 2 primary disk pools, one of 45GB for the NT
servers(colocated) and one of 4GB for the OS/2 servers(non colocated). HIMIG
is
set to 80% on the large pool and usually results is migration starting
between 2
and 3am each morning and completing around 9am.

However the storage people have just been in touch wanting to know what I am
doing with so much disc in the large pool. Basically they want 30gb back
leaving
leaving me with just 15gb. I suspect that things should continue to work
just
with migration kicking it a lot earlier however I would welcome opinions.

Is there a recommended ratio of disk pool size to amount of data backed up.
What
ratio do most people use. Are there quantifable performance impacts in
running
migration at the same time as backups. I do know from experience that with
migration starting significantly earlier I can expect a lot of additional
tape
mounts. But it might be argued so what.
Are there any other gotcha's

Re: Optimum diskpool size

2000-10-24 Thread Talafous, John G.

What I have gleaned from *SM studies is that you should have enough disk
cache to hold one day's worth of backups. Most installations will backup AND
migrate important data. But this is an installation's decision. In doing so,
it may be beneficial to backup the disk storage pool before migrating it.
Otherwise, you have to copy from tape to tape rather than from disk to tape.
(Of course, even after migrating one must backup the tape to tape pool to be
sure you get everything!)

Any optimum diskpool size will depend on how much data you normally receive
on any given day. With 700 NT servers, you have to do some math and come up
with a number to suit your needs. I think 45GB is a very low number. At
our installation, we receive much more data than that from fewer NT servers.
Again, it depends on the nature of the data and how much is backed up each
day. Have a look at that and I think you will find a solution that fits you.
And don't be too willing to give back the disk cache! You may need more for
the OS2 boxes!!! :-)

Copypool Reclamation

Memory consumption by SMDR.NLM backing up NDS

2000-10-24 Thread Peter Hadikin

Hello group,

I hope somebody can help me. We are trying to backup our NDS and are
running into a problem. As the NDS backs up, the amount of memory
'consumed' by SMDR.NLM grows and grows until no more short term memory
can be allocated on the server. Our NDS is relatively large but for the
life of me I cannot understand why SMDR keeps eating more and more
memory. This has been an ongoing problem for us regardless of versions
of software. We are currently running Netware 5 with SMDR.NLM (V5.04),
TSANDS.NLM (V5.25), TSA500.NLM (V5.03) and DSMC.NLM (V4.01A). Does
anybody out there have a clue how to get around this or do we just sit
back and watch Tivoli and Netware point the finger at each other?

Any help would be most appreciated. Let me know if you need any more
info before you can comment.

Thanks, Peter

Re: Copypool Reclamation

2000-10-24 Thread Steve Harris

Copypool reclamation is performed by copying data that is still valid on
the tape that is being reclaimed from the *source* primary stgpool again to
a new copypool tape.

e.g. if files a,b,c are all still unexpired on copypool tape c1 and d is
unexpired on c2, they also still exist in the primary pool - tapepool - a
is on tape t1, b and d are on t2 and c is on t3.

The copypool reclamation will copy a from t1, b and d from t2 and c from t3
onto a new copypool tape c9. c1 and c2 will then go pending until the
reusedelay is up.

So, unless your primary data is still on disk or sequential disk files, the
copypool reclaim is a tape to tape operation.
