We've broken compability before. Both for more efficiency and more
standard-compliance.
Also, the old default depends on the target architecture, which isn't
that nice either, since it complicates documentation, putting additional
burden both on tose that maintain the documentation and those that read it.¹

topics in our documentation where something stated in the manual that
applies only to some ports is not clearly marked as such.
