Ok, I have not seen any objections so go ahead and try to fix this. I
don't think I can be of much help as I know nothing about configure
scripts and autotools.

At first glance I did see that config.h can be cleaned already with the
distclean-hdr target. I have a feeling that 'make distclean' already
should clean everything for a distribution.
