You're right, this is not the best place. In my view the user list is for users of SDCC and the developer list is for its developers. Since you want information about developing SDCC I redirect this to the development mailing list. You'll also find some more information there.

You may call me what you like (but not always in my face though ;). When I joined SDCC I knew little about writing compilers and nothing about SDCC's internals. I learned everything by reading and observing (single stepping) the code. I started with simple stuff like adding header files and gradually grew into it.
