Thanks for your advice I have implemented yours suggestion but found  
the streamed output is ramping up and down by that I mean the volume  
increases and decreases where it did not before. I have added an entry  
to the input.alsa

stream = mksafe(normalize(audio_to_stereo(input.alsa())))

but don't think that this has anything to do with the op was fine with  
output.dummy
