Follow-up Comment #6, sr #109942 (project administration): I don't believe it is necessary for a list to be attached to be a group to receive commit mail. That wouldn't make sense. But anyway, I just attached it (following the instructions at ListServer on the wiki), since it may as well be there.
Your other note - I don't know what ofs=100 means, but http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/automake.git/log/ (without that parameter) shows recent commits, as does http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/automake.git/commit/. And if you actually check out the repository you will see them too.
