Hi Karl, The "project list" on Savannah is a very basic tool that lists project in a chronological order (based on the registration date).
On the savannah frontpage, there is a box called "savannah statistics" which prints the number of project GNU, non-GNU (etc) hosted. You'll see in that box links to the "project list" showing show only GNU or non-GNU project, depending on the link. I admit that this feature is not really advertised, probably because nobody think it was an important one before. It is not a big deal to find new idea to improve this project tool if you feel it is necessary.
