I have the weirdest experience with SANE - OSX, USB and a HP4470c When I unplug the USB, reconnect and execute some tests (stripped output):

Macintosh:~ richardbakker$ sane-find-scanner # No USB scanners found. ------------------------- I can reproduce this output by unplugging the USB and/or power and reconnect.
