Have sorted out most of the problem here. (a) Installation time for 7.0 only 7 minutes not 30, sorry (went for a cup of tea);
(b) Solution to installing database_gap is to the save the compiled version in my own tar file and reinstall in the next version from there. Works OK on test. As I use several more GAP packages, all are now installed in a single tar file and I expect future installations to be suitably rapid.
