There is a thematic tutorial found at SAGE_ROOT/devel/sage/doc/output/html/en/thematic_tutorials/coercion_and_categories.html I am not sure if the current code for modules (in sage.modules) uses categories and coercion as it should. I think I once tried to implement it, but it was opening a very large can of worms, and so I gave up. Nevertheless, reading the old module code might also give you some insight.
