The change to OpenID was part of the tightening down. We've been meaning to change to OpenID-only for a while now, and this was a good opportunity to do it while we were locking down other parts of the system.
One really good thing about having only OpenID accounts is that now, most passwords will be transmitted over secure channels (sagenb.org didn't use SSL), and password resets and things like that are handled by trusted third parties.
