I think not, since I also use the notebook on a laptop without any
network interfaces, i.e. no wireless, no cable internet.

What happens if you disable network connection (wireless and/or wired)
and run the notebook? Having said that, many people using Ubuntu 9.04
have complained about its wireless internet capabilities, meaning that
it's not as great as under Ubuntu 8.04 for example.
