Aha!  That was the problem - we assumed that simply copying the /home/
notebook would be enough (which is what was implicit in some stuff
earlier in this thread), but it wasn't.  This sounds like something
for an FAQ or the Wiki, written by someone who really understands this
(which I don't, unfortunately).  All we did was download the new
VMWare image and copy /home/notebook, but it sounds like the
permission stuff is not actually located there, n'est pas?  Maybe the
best route is to just tar up some entire directory?

Sysadmin, after success, says: Not only did I copy over the /home/
notebook folder, but I also copied over the /home/sage1 folder. [NB -
sage1 is the user created on the VM] I did have to reinstall the
authorized_keys file so ssh would work properly <snip>

I hope this helps someone else in the future as well!
