I don't think the behavior in your screen shot is a bug. The problem is that when you do the string formatting, feeding in %delW, what gets passed in is the string representation of delW, not the latex representation. For example, sage: repr([x^(3/2)]) '[x^(3/2)]' You shouldn't expect the default string representation to be latex syntax.
