Thank you Jason! I have looked through the documentation for vector analysis examples, without success. I was not aware of the gradient() function.
HOWEVER, the bug that I came upon in my initial effort is real. I could probably fix it myself if I were familiar with the sage code, but my hopes in posting the report is that someone who already has that familiarity could quickly put their finger on the problem.
