Well, 'che sera sera' -- but I'm not sure where to turn now! > How much RAM does your computer have? Linbox is a *very* demanding > library to compile from source... It's a laptop with 256MB RAM and 256MB swap. It sounds from your reply as if this isnt enough RAM. Maybe I could increase the available swap size to 512MB and then try compiling again. But another problem now is, that there was more than 1 GB free disk space before I began, but now the debris from the failed compile occupies about 400MB of it (that's _after_ deleting the tar/make subtree !). A quick look with du seems to indicate that the additions have been made in various places in the /usr subtree. So I might not have enough free disk space anymore to try another compile, until I find some way to clear out this debris whatever it is from the first attempt. As it happens, I did previously download (before the change of release) an (apparently) generic AMD binary ( sage-2.10.4-linux-32bit- AMD_Athlon.tar.gz ) intending it for my desktop (AMD) machine -- also Mandriva -- but up to now didn't have time to try and get it running. Since getting the 'bad news' in regard to sagemath compile- requirements versus my laptop, I have just now tried expanding the 2.10.4 binary with 'tar xvf filename', and running it on the desktop. I'm afraid this is not going to be unproblematic either, I see a pageful of errors. They seem to indicate that some configuration is needed, and if there are instructions for doing that, I'd appreciate a pointer to find them! The screen output from running .sage on the desktop was --- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- | SAGE Version 2.10.4, Release Date: 2008-03-16 | | Type notebook() for the GUI, and license() for information. | ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ --- <type 'exceptions.ImportError'> Traceback (most recent call last) /home/ts/sg/sage-2.10.4-Linux-i686-Linux/local/bin/<string> in <module>() /home/was/build/sage-2.10.4/local/lib/python2.5/site-packages/sage/ misc/ preparser_ipython.py in <module>() /home/was/build/sage-2.10.4/local/lib/python2.5/site-packages/sage/ misc/ interpreter.py in <module>() /home/was/build/sage-2.10.4/local/lib/python2.5/site-packages/sage/ misc/ log.py in <module>() /home/was/build/sage-2.10.4/local/lib/python2.5/site-packages/sage/ misc/ latex.py in <module>() /home/was/build/sage-2.10.4/local/lib/python2.5/site-packages/sage/ misc/ misc.py in <module>() <type 'exceptions.ImportError'>: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBC XX_3.4.9' not found (required by /home/ts/sg/sage-2.10.4-Linux-i686-Linux/local/lib/ libntl.so) WARNING: Failure executing code: 'import sage.misc.preparser_ipython; sage.misc.preparser_ipython.magma_colon_equals=True' ------------------------------------------------------------------------ --- <type 'exceptions.ImportError'> Traceback (most recent call last) /home/ts/sg/sage-2.10.4-Linux-i686-Linux/local/bin/<ipython console> in <module>() /home/was/build/sage-2.10.4/local/lib/python2.5/site-packages/sage/ misc/misc.py in <module>() <type 'exceptions.ImportError'>: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (required by /home/ts/sg/sage-2.10.4-Linux-i686-Linux/local/ lib/libntl.so) <ERROR: name 'sage_prompt' is not defined> In regard to these messages, I don't understand the version-'complaints' about glibc.
