Yes, I've used gtk-recordmydesktop which renders *.ogg files.
I prefer screencast-o-matic as I need *.mp4 files for YouTube and these files are more portable. My students can view them easily in windows, linux or mac environments.
I have also used Smart Recorder but it takes forever to render *.wmv files ... really?
I'm uploading another video to YouTube as we speak on introductory algebra. Let me know what you think. I tweaked the Mic and resolution a bit.
