Dear Simon, The patchbot I run (quasar) installs all optional packages whenever they do work. It is a pain to maintain as at each beta release there is a need to disable some of them and I sometimes provide fixes.
The wording might be misleading, but this is how optional packages are currently considered in Sage development process. They are not properly tested... I already complained about this.
