I very much agree, there should be such a "get started" document, with a big red fat "START HERE" sign. At this stage I focused on resurrecting documents that were rotting away in a corner; some of them, including the one you mention, are indeed dated. Would you be willing to write a first draft of up-to-date "get started" document? It would be best written collectively to benefit from complementary perspectives. And battlefield tested at the occasion of Sage Days and similar event.
