I suspect that it falls back to the URL in the config if it cannot get a name from DNS. On trac.sagemath.org there is also a hack that allows one to remain logged in (for a period of time?). More precisely, even if you log out, you can still log in without filling in the creds (and no, creds are not stored by the browser in its password manager, it's something else). And this is IMHO a bug to be fixed; a logout must be logout...
