A bit more information may be found in http://trac.sagemath.org/ticket/16537  
"Python 3 preparation: Use "rich comparison" - std function cmp() is gone, 
method __cmp__ is ignored".
IMHO transition to rich comparision as one of the bigger problems for the 
Python 3 migration!
