MPFR does have one important advantage: it has a *guaranteed* error bound. With PARI, you never really know how precise the answer is. So in principle, I would prefer MPFR for this reason.

I guess both are ok. Posting to sage-devel does give the question much more visibility. And it this case, it pointed out a good general question (which library do we prefer to compute special functions and which criteria matter?) On the other hand, for simple small bugs, directly posting to Trac might be better.
