I can further narrow down the bug to the following situation: OSX 10.6.8, Firefox 17.0.1 (or previous versions) opening local files (i.e. URLS like file:///....). If I start a webserver on the localhost and use Firefox to open the page in question, there is no error. The reason is that in this case MathJax fonts are loaded from the web rather than locally. (so this in fact provides another workaround for this OS/browser combination). IMHO this bug is too obscure to warrant a track ticket...
