I thing this natural language input idea is not particularly
proven here.  Why would it be easier for a user to learn to type
perfectly
formed English (or other natural language) inputs instead of math?

You should see what is done if the natural language input has
unexpected forms in it.

But,  if something is not worth doing, it is not worth doing right.

I am somewhat of a fan of spoken math as input to a computer.
Spoken math is not the same as "natural language".  Also,
there are slightly successful examples of "handwritten math" input,
though I am not aware of anything FOSS. (see math input panel on
Windows 7),
and I have posted a working prototype (math speak and write).

I agree with skeptics about building of Sage from first-principle
software on
every platform, but that seems to be a theological issue.
