At that time, he worked on using sceneJS. SceneJS still looks very promising.

I also looked at using x3dom and our current x3d generation: http://groups.google.com/group/sage-devel/msg/c73977efaff86cfb. I wasn't extremely impressed with the results at the time, but it was something.

I would love to see a webgl renderer.
