I don't know if it's on trac anywhere, but it's interesting that, as you 
say, Givaro is not a dependency for M4RIE, while the SPKG.txt file says


== Dependencies ==

 Givaro (for testing)


So we should modify spkg/standard/deps to reflect this.  Does it also 
depend on ntl?  Then both SPKG.txt (for libm4rie) and deps need to be 
changed.
