Please be careful to not throw away "too much". Some people buidling
Sage from source do *want* a libjpeg on their system to be taken into
accont by their PIL in Sage!
By the way, searching for "PIL" (just these three letters) in this
very google group brought up the following thread:

which might contain valuable information for anybody working on the
Sage PIL spkg. (The environment variable is $SAGE_BINARY_BUILD, as

respective ticket as a hit. Ah, the benefit of an open development
community ...
