For the last year or so I have been using the prebuilt version of Sage that comes packaged in Arch Linux. Somehow the maintainer of this version (Thomas Dziedzic) manages to create a fully functional self-contained Sage distribution that takes about 1.9GB for Sage 4.7. I'm ccing Thomas in case he has some words of wisdom to offer (and I take the opportunity to thank him for updating the package so quickly after each new Sage release).
