Well, credit is "the coin of the realm" in open source so it is important to make sure that those who work get recognized ("paid"). This is especially sensitive in an academic environment. If you spend a year writing software but don't publish then the tenure committee won't see any of that work. I managed to widen ("hijack") this thread to the larger topic of computational math and literate programming. Apologies for that.
