I think I have found a fix for the ECL relocation problem posted on http://trac.sagemath.org/sage_trac/ticket/11359 Unfortunately, it does involve patching ECL. I don't think Juanjo will be very enthusiastic about incorporating this patch upstream, since the problem is so specific to Sage's desire of being relocatable.
