Having a automated script to produce virtual machine images is a huge step in the right direction. Personally I think size (1.4 GB) could be optimized but it was pointed out in previous discussions that size is not a major concern for mainstream development. On the other hand with virtual machines resources of the host are split. Maybe some ideas from the sage-lithe VM prototype (407 MB) http://sage.math.washington.edu/home/emil/sagelithe/vm-sage-lithe-a1.zip could be utilized.
