Hi,

I just spent the day working on code with some people, and using
http://code.google.com with multiple cloned repositories and their
code review system, which allows excellent line by line annotation,
allows much better viewing of file diffs, etc., is really much, much
better than what we do with trac and the sage referee process. I
know Robert Bradshaw and Craig Citro have been saying this for a long
time, but I want to add that they are so, so right.

I'd be weary of relying too much on Google - they can pull feature at
any time.

When I look at the newsgroup I now see

"Google Groups will no longer be supporting the Welcome Message feature.
Starting January 13, you won't be able to edit your welcome messages,
but you will still be able to view and download the existing content.
See this announcement for more information and other options for storing
your content. [Download Welcome Message Content]"

This does not affect me, but there are some advantages in managing your
own system, and not relying on Google or anyone else.

Along those lines, how easy is it to get the data back out of google's system? Sure, the bitbucket repository is easy (and I guess the wiki is also easy to get out). But what about the line-by-line code reviews?

And then there is the issue of customization. Does the google issue tracker offer custom workflows? Custom reports (I see the advanced searching page; is that the custom reports facility?)? Interaction without creating a google account?

Is there an open-source project out there like bitbucket (i.e., like Gitorious is for git hosting?)? Is Google code better than bitbucket?

That said, +1 to the comments by Robert, Craig, and several others about having a nice automated line-by-line code review system.

Thanks,

Jason
